@doctor_mg: N-sane trilogy is a remake the same way RE was a remake for the gamecube, which translates to building new visual and sound assets from the ground up, but keeping the mechanics and control scheme absolutely the same.
RE: Remake also added a new enemy, boss fight, a small (but disturbing) story around this new enemy, the ability to do a quick 180 and defense items like daggers. Apart to that, the game played exactly like the original with fixed camera angles and tank controls.
To make things a bit more clear, I'd like to offer a few examples for each category and as follows:
Remasters: TLOU ps4, ICO & SOTC ps3, RE:Remake ps4/xone/ pc, RE revelations, FFXII the zodiac age, FFX/X-2, Wind Waker wii u etc.
Remakes: RE gamecube, R&C PS4, N-sane trilogy, upcoming RE2, upcoming (?) FFVII, upcoming SOTC ps4 etc.
Reboots: Tomb Raider, Prey, Thief, DMC: Devil may cry etc.
The game is selling well, I believe that those who know what to expect from it, will come out very satisfied. If you go in blindly, you might set yourself up for disappointment. It's a very niche game and absolutely a kind of love it or hate it situation. That's why some reviews vary greatly from others. And the funny thing is that in the end, both sides are right.
Don't go in if you don't know what's it about, except if you are persistent and up for a mild to difficult challenge. If so, you might discover a gem.
@Gelugon_baat: I agree that being a blind fan boy is a detriment to the industry and most of all to yourself.
However, my comment has nothing to do with fanboism, since I'm not really a fan of the series. I tried to look at it objectively, and I concluded that it is not bad to bring back some old games with a fresh cost of paint. They introduce younger generations to times they have missed and might even revive dead franchises, if the demand is there.
Finally, this was an outsource job, ND may very well work full throttle in their new projects, while giving another smaller dev the chance to bring back a beloved series (for some) and make a name for themselves.
@Gelugon_baat: Because you don't like it, it doesn't mean others shouldn't either. Let people enjoy what they want, what's your problem?
In the end, this isn't even a remaster, it's not like they took a PS3 game, upped the resolution and sold it back full price. They took an old ass PS classic trilogy, remade the majority of the assets and kept the gameplay true to the originals. That's 3 games for 40 bucks too.
Of course it would be outdated, that was never the point. I don't think they were out to redesign the modern platformer. The point was whether or not they could be faithful to the originals, with a fresh coat of paint. I think they succeeded.
Still, this one remains a very niche game that is not out to appeal to the masses in my opinion. Rather, it's a loving tribute to those who played and loved the trilogy as kids.
When it comes down to it, it is hard to put a number on this game. The intended crowd will love it but all the rest will be frustrated by the outdated framework. I think the best choice would be to understand what the game is going for and score it accordingly, rather than compare it with modern platformers.
