I think it comes from an identity crisis: people partially define themselves by the entertainment they consume - whatever the medium - because they see something of themselves reflected in it. So if your identity isn't fully formed or you don't have the self-confidence to disassociate it from the games/films/books/music on which it's founded, any criticism comes as a personal affront.

Those of us who love games and want them to be taken more seriously should be the first to poke holes in our favourites - it shows confidence and maturity.

On that note: if anyone knows anything wrong with Dark Souls beyond the finicky lock-on and occasional lag, I'm all ears...

@Dragon_Nexus @WereCatf I agree it's odd, but if anyone's earned a little trust it's Kojima. It's the wantonness of overly-sexual female character design that's objectionable, but if there's a story-based justification, then it's not motivated by sexism. He says there is, so I'm suspending judgement until I play the game.

@Leivve @rsj2 @Hekteur @xolivierx Fair play, but - and this is only my personal taste talking - I think I'm yet to see a Wii U title that I'd really like, so one gets the feeling that whatever they're doing, it's not enough, and this story is interesting because it's probably the reason why.

It's not nice to see how quickly the community seems to have turned on Nintendo, which has (rightly) been highly regarded from the NES to the Wii, but they've screwed up badly with the Wii U. It's hard to see why anyone other than Nintendo loyalists would buy one.

@Hekteur @xolivierx Not necessarily; Nintendo's first-party titles don't appeal to all gamers universally. They all have the same cartoony, innocent aesthetic, which I've never much loved. Playing Nintendo consoles at mate's houses, I've found their first-party games mildly fun for group or casual play, but never a reason to buy a Nintendo console.

Nintendo have no first-party titles that interest me either, which is why they need third parties if they're interested in more customers.

@xgraderx @rsj2 Fair, but I see that as MS rowing back on the launch, which was about everything BUT games. All their policy reversals since then have been part of the same process: they realised no one wanted what they were selling, so they've tried to convince us they were selling something else.

I respect MS for innovating and I hope they do well in the next generation, if only because I think we all benefit from having several serious competitors in the console market, but I don't think anyone can deny Sony has won the opening PR skirmishes. That's partly down to how they've positioned games centrally from the start, and dealt with "extra" features like TV later.

It's cool the PS4 will do TV as well - I don't think anyone wants less functionality from their console, the problem was Microsoft put too much emphasis on everything the Xbox One could do other than play games. Obviously that's going to set alarm bells ringing among the core customers. Sony reassured us their focus was on games, so TV and "other stuff" is seen as what it should be: a nice bonus.

Great week for games news. SO pumped for GTA5 and Witcher 3.

@joel_c17 @tempertress @AnAngryW0lf Agreed. I've seen plenty of comments accusing Gamespot of being biased in favour of Microsoft over Sony in the past. If your favourite company does something silly, expect them to get mocked.

@BarkingSpider81 @rsj2 Yeah that annoyed me too - I've been playing again since the DLC *finally* released and it doesn't seem to be as much of a problem. Load times in particular are a bit better.

Everytime I watch this show I'm reminded afresh of my idiocy in buying Skyrim for PS3 when I have a perfectly good PC. That Dragon Cliff Manor looks amazing.
