Since they have people animating them, I suppose those "umf, uhn, mrf" sounds are written into the script, and then some poor actor has to say them into a microphone, probably while reflecting on where exactly they took a wrong turn in their career.

Can you guys advise which of my Steam sale purchases to play first? I got Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic; Antichamber; Chivalry; Quantum Condundrum, Spelunky and Thomas Was Alone. Any favourites to recommend?

Cool video as always Danny, enjoy Dark Souls - arguably my favourite ever game.

@mute4 Personally I had to summon help for Ornstein and Smough the first time I played, and if you want to avoid invasions you can just play in hollow form, so I'd say it's harder offline. You also don't get the sense of community from other players' hints and phantoms - it does add a lot. But as others have said, it's too good not to play just because of that!

I liked the part where you said "I am not a fanboy"

@FlyingAce1016 Is that true? Awesome, thanks for that. Every day's a school day.

@Buck_Swaggler Interesting, why do you think that? It's a bit of a controversial statement considering how well it sold and how many new demographics it reached.

Another gamer hate issue I don't get. I've never bought a Nintendo console and the cartoon aesthetic of their first-party titles doesn't appeal to me, but having played the N64, GameCube and Wii at friends' houses I get why others like them. Knowing my history, I also understand that they basically saved console gaming with the NES and revolutionised it with the SNES.

One bad console (or maybe the Wii U's problem is just bad marketing, in which case Nintendo have even less to regret) does not undo their track record, and shouldn't cause people to forget their contribution to the industry. Equally, they're going through a bad patch and GameSpot is right to discuss it, which Danny did in a fair, dispassionate way.

@SambaLele That's fair, and I think you're also right to say the innovation criterion isn't applied as strictly with CoD and other annualised series (e.g. Madden, FIFA) as rigorously as some titles: you've got Shaun McInnis praising Ghosts for innovations like Extinction mode while Carolyn Petit marks down Arkham Origins for being repetitive, when to me it looks like there's about as much innovation in each game (i.e. not much, but enough to look like we're trying).

That's why it's good to see other sites like Kotaku and Polygon having a more determined bash at CoD for not innovating enough, and why I always read at least three different reviews of a game if I'm on the fence about getting it.

@gravendarken Be fair, the fact that each CoD release is very similar to the last doesn't necessarily mean each game is bad, it just means they don't innovate much. They, like the annual rehashes of sports games, serve a particular type of casual gamer, and review sites have as equal a duty to them as to anyone else.

@spartanx169x Yeah, I used to play on PC but I stopped mainly because of the problems you list. I wasn't arguing that it's a great game, only that it proves F2P games don't all look and feel like cheap crap, which is what Sundberg was saying.
