I enjoyed FFXIII. I think it is a rare example in the series where the developers have for once designed a game that sticks to it's strengths and doesn't submit to the whimsical needs of gamers with short attention spans (read minigames). It is the game where SE has gone and said to all of it's fans, "This is the game how WE want it to be and whether you like it or not is upto you". This has done a great deal of benefit to FFXIII. For once, the narrative doesn't have to be interrupted by silly minigames or unnecessary sidequests or other distractions and remains focused for most parts.Â
Another big positive I found in FFXIII is it's battle system which IMO is essentially the best ATB-oriented battle system we've seen in the series. It's everything FFIX's battle system should have been IMO. Fast, fluid with adequate amount of strategic thinking to succeed.
I found the story was pretty well-told for most parts. Of course, Square Enix aren't the best writers around and you still have the occasionally cheesy dialogues springing up in serious situations which make you go facepalm. Other than that the main plot and it's narration were pretty good. The characters were mostly likeable by the end and some of them grew on you more than others. The likes of Fang,Lightning,Hope are my favourites. I like Sazh when he's not trying to be funny as it makes him look like an oversized kid. Vanille grew on me eventually but unfortunately Snow remained as annoying in the end atleast for me as he was in the beginning.
Overall a great game that is doesn't deserve all the criticism aimed at it. Probably the third FF in the series for me after FFVIII,FFVI and possibly tied with FFVII and FFIV. :) Â
