I'm curious if the Wii U version was patched prior to this review or not.

I finished the entire game on the Wii U already, so I think I have a valid case. I installed the patch to the game prior to playing it and haven't experienced any of the technical issues raised in this review. That's not to say the game doesn't have technical problems - it does, as evident on all the platforms - but the issues described above didn't occur during my playthrough. What I did experience seemed to be pretty much on course for what the experience has been on the other platforms -- pop in (as has been per usual for the series), frame rate issues and an abundance of glitches (still funny).

The hard lock issue seems to be with the entire console rather than specifically tied to a game, as it hasn't happened to me with Assassin's Creed 3 but has with Black Ops 2 and Nintendo Land.

In any case, I appreciate that Kevin and GameSpot did review the Wii U version, however I'm still curious as to what causes Kevin to experience those issues.

It's just kind of strange to me considering my own experience was completely different, as I legitimately did not encounter any of those types of problems, only ones that are shared on all all platforms.

I've only ever played the first Layton game but I'm really interested in picking this one up. I had no idea it was coming out this month.

This is a GREAT new feature on GS and definitely something that SHOULD be discussed. Thoroughly enjoyed reading through this - not something you usually see in video game journalism.

Here's hoping for a Wii U version, because that'd be cool.

Just to let you know, the update has launched worldwide. I'm in Canada and I got a SpotPass notification about it and have downloaded the patch.

Ugh, so many ppl in the industry like to start wars. Can't you just learn to accept that good games can come from all sorts of places, indie or big corporations? No gaming company is 'destroying gaming'.

I find that Tom is contradicting himself with some points in this article, like stating how the DS became the best selling platform of all time then stating that 'Nintendo should push new ideas instead of recycling ideas that never worked before' - The DS had a ton of titles that did take advantage of the bottom screen and a lot of developers and gamers enjoy the fact that there are two screens on the device. Although, I do agree a larger top screen would've been nicer, the default screen doesn't come off as cheap or dated. The 3D screen is impressive, as is the PS Vita's OLED display - They're both great. Not all the games have to use the dual screens like The World Ends With You or Hotel Dusk. Something as simple as inventory management in Resident Evil: Revelations makes things easier and more comfortable for the player, it doesn't halt the action any more by pressing start to manage your inventory, everything's done on the bottom screen. The two screen idea has always been genius and it makes even more sense to think of something like that coming to a console with the Wii U. I often think of the Wii U's second screen like a second monitor. Management of space is essential and it can definitely benefit gaming as a whole like the ways I mentioned, whether it's inventory management on your controllers screen or having a radar/map on your controllers screen for a large JRPG, it's a definite benefit.

Great article! I definitely see a lot of similarities in what they've done across different platforms. E3 should be great.
