This generation has been a blessing in disguise for gamers in general especially the ones thirsty for old school gaming that disappeared in second half of last generation. Digital distribution and PC architecture of consoles revolutionized PC gaming in recent years. Platforms like Steam, GOG and Epic Store made devs more confident to target PC as a lead platform. We saw Console centric games coming to PC this gen due to profitable PC platform but also because it was a lot easier to port games over due to same architecture being shared by all major platforms.
Some devs have even changed their core design because of success of PC centric distribution platforms. Assassin's Creed might be the best example of it. It was a series that always received delayed PC ports. Earlier ports didn't even highlight PC's Keyboard and Mouse layout but instead assumed that you were playing the game on a Controller. Sure later entries in the franchise did innovate in User Interface department but the core gameplay was still designed with Consoles in mind. You had Controller centric movement and checkpoint based save system and poor optimization.
After the success of games like the Witcher trilogy and Divinity saga (designed for PCs primarily) among others, Assassin's Creed started taking cues from old school computer RPGs and with AC: Origins, gave us PC centric controls and game design. Odyssey went further. These games featured more PC specific features than we often see in PC exclusive games even. You had FOV in a third person game, Grid based User interface for mouse, Quick selection slots designed for keyboard, several resolutions, borderless fullscreen support, good optimization, stunning visuals, Uncapped frame rates and even manual save system.
Industry went back in time to take inspiration for their games unlike last gen. During the last gen copying COD was the trend, this gen, it's about taking inspiration from old school genres and video games. I'd say PC is at the center of it all. You have beloved franchises like Doom, VTM Bloodlines, Shadow Warrior, System Shock and so on coming back. You have computer RPGs like Divinity and highly anticipated ones like Baldur's Gate 3 being made by extremely talented Larian Studios. Creative Assembly as usual is doing their own magic as they've been for 2 decades and are still releasing one high end masterpiece after another.
You have Wolcen: Lords of Mayem, probably the prettiest looking isometric ARPG in the market at the moment developed by a small studio. You have boundary pushing video games like Squadron 42 coming out in the near future with final beta being planned for this year. You have titans like Half Life: Alyx and Cyberpunk 2077 coming out in the near future targeting PC as a lead platform. You have games like Control that put Remedy back on track. Microsoft Flight Sim, displaying photorealistic visuals. Age of Empires is back. Homeworld: Deserts of Kharrak kicked ass.
STALKER 2 is in development. Next game in Hellblade franchise is looking fantastic. A good Star Wars game came out recently. Microsoft has more or less started to focus on PC as their main platform and there are rumors of Sony showing interests in the said platform. More and more multiplatform games are utilizing strengths of every platform without compromising any version because it's a lot easier to do so these days. Not to mention the way industry has matured over the years.
At the end of the day, it's great time to be a gamer.
