In sept 23, 2016 Playstation 4 will finally hit stores. People will be robbed/shot for PS4 on launch day. The cost will be 699.00 with no Pack in game, and One controller. The launch titles bomb and everyone complains it's the end of Sony. Internet boards are full of people remembering the good old days days of Playstation 3. As PS3 slimline has long sinced crossed the 100 Million mark. At this point Mircosoft is on Xbox 5 which launches the same day. So it other words Playstation 4 will be great... It will just take awhile for people to enjoy Playstation 4. Megavideogamer

I totally agree, this has pretty much happened for each playstation so far, so why not?

I replied to a couple of topics on PS4, and decided to make my own topic about it. Feel free to express your own ideas, assuming PS4 will be released.

When will PS3 be superceeded by PS4?

I think this (7th) generation might be the longest yet, because development costs were all higher, and PS3 has had a slow start, and Sony plan for it to be a 10 year lifespan of a console.

I know (from wiki) PlayStation came out Japan in Dec 1994, North America and Europe in Sep 1995, it cost $299 on launch day, ceased production in 2006.

PS2 was announced in 1999, and launched in 2000 in Japan, but there were manufacturing problems. PS2 is still on sale today, and probably will stay in production longer than PS (2012 ? ).

PS3 was launched Nov 2006 in Japan and North America, and March 2007 in Europe, plus there were manufacturing difficulties. As it stands, PS3's sales growth rate is higher than PS2's for the same period of time (take from that whatever you want). I expect PS3 to stay alive for as long or longer than PS2, (probably be in production till at least 2018 ) because the money invested in it is a much larger amount.

PS4 will (if Sony keeps doing these kinds of increments in technology) cost even more to make, and will probably have holographic disc format, and real-time raytracing graphics hardware. If history serves as a good indicator, PS4 will be expected to come out about 5-6 years into the PS3's life, but because of the much bigger leap in technology, I think it will be more like 8-9 years. I don't think they will be 'doing a microsoft' and releasing a new console 3 years later, no way. I think developers still have a lot to learn about the Cell Broadband Engine, and all the tricks it can do before they start working on something completely different. Who knows, by then molecular computing or optical computing might be coming to the mainstream and there could be a revolutionary change in technology that makes the PS4 take even longer to come out.

Will it support 1080p or 1260p/1440p?

I think we'll have 1080p for a very long time, just like we had standard def tv's for a long time. Everything is still converting to 1080 such as broadcast tv, and I don't think there will be another upgrade for a while, until everything is 720 or 1080 and standard definition tv's are no longer available, but that's just my opinion.

What other technology will it have?

I think there will definitely be a different storage medium used in the PS4, probably holographic discs, as these will be able to store 1.6 terrabytes. I also wonder whether all or most games will use raytracing in real-time in the 8th console generation (that's what we're heading for it seems), that would make games insanely expensive to make but the graphics would largely look like those in pre-rendered CGI films. Hopefully it will be fully backward compatible with PS3 games! and have PSP connectivity! maybe they'll even bring back PS2 compatibility and upscaling, maybe even a UMD slot for playing PSP games on the machine or maybe the PSP2 will be out then...

On the other hand, it has been expected for a while now that silicon chip technology would become obsolete, and replaced by optical processors or molecular processors, and deveopment in these areas is slowly happening. Eventually this will lead to artificial nervous systems (brains in your playstaion and pc) and the holy grail - quantum computers. If these technologiies are to be implemnted into the PS4, it would not be out for a very long time.

I'll maybe add more later

I normally try to finish a game after I've started it, and have done so with hundreds, but there are exceptions. Firstly, some games back in the day were far too difficult when I was 6 to 10 years old, e.g. fantastic dizzy on the game gear, Ninja on the master system, Zool on the megadrive, so I usually played them as far as I could and get game over then not play for a while (you couldn't save your progress).

Other more recent games i've not completed include Final Fantasy 8, because I hadn't levelled up my characters enough and got bored and couldn't beat the boss after cerberus, so I gave up and never looked back.

More recently, Prince of Persia the Two Thrones: I got really far in the game- completed one tower and half of the other one, but did them in the wrong order - there was a massive glitch causing me to look like the sand wraith, even though I hadn't seen that bit of the game story yet, and wherever I went, the screen would go black and white as if the monster thing was chasing me, and in some rooms it was completely black and you could just fall into nothingness and die, therefore my saved game was screwed and it was impossible to complete, i didn't want to redo all of it again so gave up and traded it in due to glitchyness.

Then I bought ratchet and clank 2, and got to about 75% complete and my brother erased the save file!! to make room for one of his games!! so I never bothered to redo the enormous game again. Then I bought ratchet and clank 3, and this time I basically havent had access to the ps2 because its in my brother's posession, and I've got a ps3 instead, and it's a european 60 gig, and ratchet and clank 3 doesn't work on it so I havent completed that either.

If you're paddling upstream and a wheel falls off, how many pancakes can you fit in a doghouse?

None, ice cream doesn't have any bones.

BZSIN

the number of pancakes is calculated by height x depth x width of doghouse divided by height x pi radius squared of the pancake. so say a standard doghouse is 100cm x 200cm x 100cm, and standard pancake is 1cm x pi x 4 squared, thats 39,788 pancakes. it doesnt matter if ice cream contains bones or whether a wheel falls of while you're paddling upstream. ice cream contains milk, which has calcium, and some ice creams even contain gelatine, so i guess it almost contains bone.

OK dude, just be happy you have a ps3 and ignore all the people who say its crap, then you won't feel the urge to write stuff like this. I have a ps3, i chose it because i knew MGS4 was coming out for it, and because the online service is free, I also have become loyal to Sony, after owning the past 2 consoles and PSP and being happy with them. You could say I'm a fanboy, but I just like Sony's designs, including walkmans and everything, not too keen on their mobile phones though. I also think the playstation controller feels better than other consoles' controllers, but its a personal thing. after Sony, Sega is my favourite console manufacturer, and I was loyal to them for a while but couldn't afford a saturn or dreamcast. If Sony ever retires making consoles, I will go with the next company that meets my consumer needs, and I doubt it will be Microsoft or Nintendo. Yes Ps3 is the best piece of hardware, but right now it hasn't shown its full potential, we just have to wait. The best stuff is yet to come.

I own both of them, and have played both quite a bit. Read my reviews on them. I think MGS4 is jam-packed with extra stuff including metal gear online, and you'll play it for a long long time to come until the next Metal Gear comes out, and especially if you enjoyed MGS3 and MGS2 and MGS! Uncharted is a very good game, its a brave new franchise and has a great story, I'm sure we'll be getting a sequel. If you like Tomb Raider, Indianna Jones, action, platforming and gunfights you should try it but it has less replay value than MGS4, which is mostly due to the lack of online mode in Uncharted. Anyway click on my username and check out my reviews of those games!

there may not be trophies but theres tonnes of unlockable items, weapons, costumes, emblems, based on your performance in the single player mode, and you can exchange drebin points for things like stealth camo etc. if you're after replay value its not too bad but u will get used to the story very quickly so probably just fly through the game after the first couple of times. online mode is awesome though, almost unlimited fun to be had.

personally, i have only one ps3 sixaxis controller. and on the rare occasion one of my friends wants to play against me(i kick their butts too often), on tekken 5, resistance, demos, mortal kombat 2 etc, ive got a USB dual shock-like controller for the PC which works with the PS3, except the face buttons are in different positions, like circle is X etc. I'm sure it could be rewired to have the right positions... I might buy a dual shock 3 when i see one for a decent price or if theres a game that requires vibration to get the most from it. Ive played COD4 on 4 player split screen but that was with a projector and me and 3 friends brought our controllers with us so theres no need for any of us to own 3 or 4. Motorstorm 2 will have split screen, that should be good, and i expect wipeout hd will have split screen too, but i doubt it will be 4 player.
