@Paulf001 I personally don't like F2P at all as they rarely have any lasting power, but you may be right, that's just how the market is nowadays. I am really hoping Yoshi-P can buck the trend, though.

@linkdarkside It was profitable because it had a pretty small development team and a small but rabid fanbase that would tolerate the kind of updates they could put out. As a long time FFXI player, I really wish FFXI players would realize this and stop acting like our game was the magical exception to every rule about MMOs.

I want FFXIV to do well as the reboot looks quite good, but the way the market looks is not making me optimistic.

Expat in Japan here. So far my gamer friends haven't even mentioned the Xbox One even though it was just announced! They're mostly psyched for PS4 though.

Call it xenophobia if you liked, but I'm not Japanese and I personally never liked Microsoft's business model. When you add games that were clearly either not intended for you like the FPS games, or transparently bought off exclusives like the early JRPGs that helped wreck that genre, I don't blame them for that response. Still, I think the Xbox 360 deserves a better rap here than it's gotten, as it has some good exclusives.

I'm sure it'll be good, but I think everyone needs to step away from DmC. It was a decent game, but didn't feel like a DmC game, it might as well just have been a new title.

@JimmeyBurrows Well, that's just it, back when those games came out Japanese devs were leading in innovation. Games have evolved since then. "Just make it like we always did" is exactly what got the Japanese industry in this situation in the first place.

I bought this a month ago (an American import copy at that) for PS3. I'm willing to grab it for PC to get some full HD action, but only on a steam sale. I like Platinum games, but not enough to pay full price twice on the same game.

The yen is a major factor. It's great for companies I like, such as Sony and Nintendo. Not so good for foreigners trying to send money back home though. Ah well. I'm still glad to see Sony finally turning a profit again, and a pretty healthy one at that, as of the big 3 I think they've done the best job of listening to their consumers in the past few years.

I'm looking forward to this. Especially living in Japan now, where Microsoft's next console will fail miserably if the 360 is any indication, PS4 is where my first buy will be. I am a PC gamer first, though, and if there are a lot of titles shared with PC, I won't be first in line to grab this.

I think Arkham City's success shows you don't need multiplayer to have a successful game if you make a great one. I kind of wish this wasn't in here, but what can you do, execs are convinced that this is how to make money, and until people just reject these tacked on multiplayer modes and stop playing them or getting the DLC for them, they always will.

My bigger disappointment is one that already existed, which is that they're copping out from the cliffhangers in Arkham City and doing a prequel instead. It really bugs me when serial tv shows or anime do that, let alone a game that has several years between installments. Of course, Rocksteady not being involved is also a worry, but I hope it turns out well because I loved the first two games.

@MdoRandoms @rogerpenna It's not that in this case, Square Enix itself said it underperformed. It's SE's fault for setting an astronomical sales projection and overbudgeting it. SE's Eidos devs have been putting out some amazing games this past year but SE found a way to turn that into a loss.
