mgs5 DOMINATING the poll, future game of the century right here folks

Yeah man, I noticed A LOT of MGSV mentions in this thread, it's looking like the clear winner right now. Hopefully Char will put up some preliminary results here soon.

  1. MGSV. I dont care if this has the freeroam cancer, at least it looks fun as hell.

As someone who typically dislikes a lot of the free-roam/open-world titles, I think it's safe to say this will be a non-issue with MGSV. This is actually a rare instance in which I believe the game will benefit from taking this direction. Even as a bite sized chunk, Ground Zeroes showed us some insane potential for open ended MGS play.

Also, everything they've shown from the main game looks tight as ****. Usually I dislike open world games because they hang their hat on simply being open world games. Core gameplay is usually average, or flat out sucks. Missions get extremely repetitive, pacing is garbage, etc... It doesn't look like MGSV will be falling into those issues.

Also, the free roam is pretty much optional. You can land at the mission zone, complete it, and fly right back to base to gear up for the next mission. Or you can stay on the map and travel to the next mission, or just screw around if you want.

The amount of freedom is going to be bat shit insane.

/gushing.

I really hope it does, and heck, it may make for some interesting stealth scenarios and the general commando feel I get from MGS. And yes, it looks like MGSV is avoiding pretty much everything I hate about these open world games. It may even be the first freeroam game to actually get it right, and have the freeroam stuff add to the core experience.

If I do see side objectives to collect 500 arbitary items (feathers, flags, runes, ect.), I will be disappointed though.

Interesting how you brought up ESO, I was reading an mmorpg.com article yesterday discussing its development throughout last year. It actually seems like the developers want to make a good game, unlike Guildenburg 2 which was just... abandoned.

And really, PC gamers are as prone to hype and empty promises as console gamers are. Let us not delude ourselves here. The Steam top sellers list is evidence of as much. But with the bad word of mouth the game got on PC. Maybe, just maybe, console gamers will think twice.

Because Bethesda absolutely sucks at storytelling and pacing, even their world building is shit right along with their gameplay. The only thing they have going for them is massive land masses which give the illusion of a wide open world where the player can do anything.

Their flaws would be even more apparent without the crux of the open world playground.

TES has some of the best world building in the gaming industry. It is a shame they (Bethesda) never truly capitalize on it. Maybe a more linear spinoff of TES could allow for a story to truly capitalize on TES lore. Baldur's Gate 2 scope, would be great.

Great world builders. Terrible with gameplay, storytelling and loot. Dark Souls does loot right, dragons dogma had the gameplay and baldurs gate had the storytelling.

Baldur's Gate 2 also had excellent loot and gameplay (that encounter design is some of the best I have seen in the entire RPG genre, only beaten by Dark Sun: Shattered Lands).

Bethesda has some of the worst world building and lore execution ever. They stopped being good at it ironically enough with their last great game, Morrowind.

Straight kindergarten writing has overtaken the elder scrolls series ever since oblivion. Skyrim did very little to change that.

True, the world building has been incredibly weaksauce ever since Pete and Toddler got too much power within Bethesda and made Oblivious and the other TES fanfic that is Skyrim. But the lore established in previous games was very much excellent.

A 14 minutes gameplay demo has about 4 minutes of actual gunplay, 3 minutes of "gameplay," 6 minutes of cutscenes, and 1 minute of transitions and black screen.

This looks like a really shitty, garbage version of Gears of War or Uncharted. Even in this dolled up preview footage, the AI is braindead, the gunplay looks boring, the QTE's are plentiful, and there's really nothing going for this. Personally, I don't even find the graphics that good, everything's hidden behind a mountain of ugly screen filters and scripted events, nothing is dynamic or interactive or interesting at all.

I have no idea why this is hyped. Are PS4 fans really that desperate for games that they have to build up tripe like this?

I don't even think Cows (except for fakeboys and trolls) are all that hyped for this anymore.

Xbox One.I hope I don't get the sh*t kicked out of me for saying so.

XBOX One had a better year than a lot of people give it credit for, while I wouldnt rank it above the PC or the Wii U, I would rank it above the 3DS and PS4.

As always, PC Wins. And with Divinity: Original Sin, blows away the competition.

However, the Wii U really surprised me this year. Definately the best of the consoles, any multiplats I can play on the PC anyway. Best version too.

@Salt_The_Fries: it's their "MO" to make non linear open world games and people love them for it, why change that?

What I want to know is why can't they add better loot variety to their elder scrolls games? No spears, lances, mounted combat, morning stars, throwing daggers, chakrams, flails, cool mysterious weapons from other provinces, etc.... All we ever get is daggers, swords, axes, mace, and the 2 handed versions... If modders can easily make this stuff so could Bethesda.

Engine limitations (joking). But seriously, most players go with swords in RPGs, sadly. I almost never go with swords, and tend to use the most exotic (but believable) weapons I can find. I use the Immersive weapons addon, and quickly found myself using a quarterstaff.

Edit: the list. Splatoon is now 3rd and War for the overworld replaces Kingdom Come

  1. MGSV. I dont care if this has the freeroam cancer, at least it looks fun as hell.
  2. War for the overworld: Who doesnt want to be the dungeon keeper?
  3. Splatoon: Looks charming and fun, an interesting twist to the shooter genre.

Worth mentioning,

Zelda: I am a huge zelda fan. But seeing the supposed world sized killed a lot of my hype, now it is wait and see. Freeroam cancer may have killed this game for me. It all rests on the dungeons now.

The Mandate: My most hyped game, But I dont think this will release next year. If it does, it will easily take the top slot. I can comandeer a spaceship, and run the crew, totally feeling like a boss.

Bethesda delivers what they are good at and what their fans want. To see them do differently is like seeing Valve make a console exclusive, Nintendo make a cinematic cover based shooter or BioWare make a game with good gameplay again.

At least they aren't putting guns in The Elder Scrolls to bring in Call of duty audience.

I thought they already did that with The Elder Scrolls 4.5: Capital Wasteland :P
