[QUOTE="C_Rule"][QUOTE="ferret-gamer"][QUOTE="C_Rule"] What performance gain? They have pretty similar performance.

Newer crossfire drivers do better scaling than SLI, 6970 crossfire tend to perform more closely to gtx 580 sli, especially at higher than 1080p resolutions.

True, I have noticed this.

It's kind of a nice trade off right now, makes the companies seem more even when the 580 is so much more powerful than the 6970.

Steam was telling me it was running in compatability mode but if I went into preferences it was not, anyone know what caused this? I was just able to skip the error and log in but just wanted to make sure something was not messed up.

I did try to run Battle for Middle Earth 2 the other day for funzies and had to try to run that in compatability mode because it was crashing on load no matter what, but that should not have affected steam at all.

I dont know how well everyone here trusts toms hardware, but here's an interesting article showing xfire 6950's are about as good as sli 570's, which makes me lean more toward the 6970's.

Do you think consoles will ever become upgradeable like PC's?....new graphics cards, memory, etc. I know they have digital updates and in some cases you can expand memory.

Dudka26
I would think consoles will stay as they are, just imagine the majority of people you know having to mess with taking a graphics card out and putting a new one in to make the new Halo look better. I think that consoles have become static hardware because most people do not want to deal with the complexity that comes with a desktop with modular pieces.

people really like exaggerating stuff. I game at 1080p and my video card is a 4770. Im able to play most games at 1080p pretty fluidly so im guessing a 6850 will also be fine.

blaznwiipspman1
It all comes down to WHAT games you are playing. If you are playing games that are older (like i have been to catch up from my console days) a 4770 will destroy those games, if you load up crysis 2 throw it to max and play at 1080 it wont be smooth enough for most people. Even some older games take up a ton of power as well and that is what would push the 6850 at 1080. Or with an i5 you could be playing games where your cpu takes a big responsibility, like WoW or SC2. Metro and the original Crysis still are powerhouses and until the most recent generation there was not a single gpu card that could handle Crysis at its highest settings, Metro is still pretty bad even for the gtx 580. I dont know the science behind where what you can notice stops mattering, but I'd say just shoot for what looks nice to you. Personally I dont see much difference between 50 and 60 fps and I'd only notice a drop into the 40's if I was waiting for it. If you are happy with what you see on your monitor it doesnt matter what others tell you about what your FPS should be.

[QUOTE="Limp_Laky"]

When adding RAM does it matter if it is exactly the same? Or does anything have to be the same? I have 2x2gb sticks and want to add another 2 to go up to 8 gb sometime this summer.

swehunt
No the only thing to watch out for is the voltage, what happens is that all modules will run at the freq of the slowest module and if you buy memory with different voltage you will have to raise or lower one(pair) from their default setting. You can also match different size of memory, you can buy another 2GB (1+1GB) set to add with the 4GB (like 2+2GB) and still be running them in dualchanel. (1+2 ch1 and 1+2 in ch2= dual 6GB) What program do you need 8GB for?

I'm running photoshop and what not and would enjoy having a little more ram in, I know it really does nothing with gaming.
