Another thing is once you have been been building systems for a while when you upgrade your system you just need a few parts. For instance when the new consoles roll out I just need a mobo, cpu and ram which will cost less than a ps4. Half the hardware can be moved over to a new system. Some people with a recent dell pc may only need a video card and a psu to be way ahead of a ps4 which will likely cost less. I7s and i5s are pretty common just the psus suck in most pre-built systems.
It's like moving to a new house but you still bring over half your furniture with you. Occasionally you throw out some really old furniture and replace it, but if an old couch still works use it. I used a dvd-rom to install win 7 on some pc a week ago and that dvd-rom is from 2003 before the ps3 or 360 even existed yet it's still relevant today.
I have newer hardware too but the point is if you were really cheap you can actually slowly upgrade a pc over time for very cheap.
All that said I will still buy a ps4 because I like some variety.
