Alright.....I seriously want to get into some modern combat flight simulators

European Air War is one of my favorites of all time... very realistic flight modelling and pretty good damage modelling as well... the graphics are great for its time and the hardware requirements are next to nothing (P3, any directX capable 3d video card), not sure how it mixes with XP, though... it can be found for less than $10 if you look around...
