@Jimminyfixit: Kinect was a gimmick because the motion controls never worked that great. VR is a different animal.
I don't see it in this article but I'm pretty sure they already mentioned backwards compatibility with existing PSVR titles. It'd be nuts if they didn't support that.
I thought it was alright overall but I had several complaints:
1) Cringingly self-referential, especially in the first act. I know it's been a minute since the first movie but maybe trust your audience enough to assume that they remember it well enough that you don't have to bombard them with flashbacks and clips or rehashing scenes. It's a new movie. Get on with the new stuff.
2) Cinematography was OK at best compared to the earlier films. The first in particular had some amazing photography and shot composition. Individual shots, angles, and use of color were on par with movies like Dark City. This film? Not so much.
3) Choreography and wirework for the first three were done by Hong Kong legend Yuen Woo-Ping, which is one of the reasons why they were so great. Both of these elements were comparatively weak in this one.
4) Heavy handed allegory/innuendo. NPH's psychiatrist character is wearing blue glasses with blue clothing and prescribing Neo blue pills to deal with his anxiety? How can anyone be expected to pick up on the queues when they are this subtle. Why not have him have blues posters all over his wall with a Toronto Bluejays game on the TV while Eiffel 65's popular 90s song "Blue" plays on the radio to really drive the point home? FFS...
@zmanbarzel: Jazzpunk VR would indeed be awesome, but Accounting+ is a blast on its own. It's voiced by Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty). They also did a Rick and Morty VR game (not on Quest) that's really good.
I went ahead and bought it. Although I already had a few of these and gifted the keys, it's probably worth mentioning that several of these games are crossbuy so the key will likely get you the PC version of the game as well if you're interested. I'm pretty sure at least Zombieland and Accounting+ will get you both versions as I don't think it's possible to buy one without the other on the Oculus store. If you opt for the extra $10 for Zero Caliber: Reloaded, that is a separate Quest version with a different title/store entry so no crossbuy for that one.
This game is pretty fun, but you can get hosed hard on the RNG. It's a good thing it gives you two lives ahead of the boss battles, because you can easily get a bad beat and end up dead by the second turn with nothing you can do about it. Still, the runs are short and it's easy enough to start over.
@skyhighgam3r: I know, right? I went into Alan Wake still expecting it to be in an open world format having not heard they scrapped that idea well before launch. Although an argument could be made that open world games have very different pacing from horror games and that the two wouldn't work well together, maybe we'll see something like the original vision in Alan Wake 2.
