This is sickening to be quite honest. I saw on the news that Israeli artillery had hit a school - further adding to the civilian and more frighteningly child death count; then I come on GS to find people putting innocent in inverted commas, and people condemning these civilians for being there in the first place. Disgraceful.
I am 100% fully behind Palestine in these actions, being blockaded since June(? not sure of month) 2007 - essentially because the Palestinians in Gaza didn't make the 'correct' -- by the standards of Israel and the US (Most of Europe as well probably but I haven't looked that up) -- decision in terms of electing Hamas - is going to cause some resentment, what does the Israeli government expect to happen? It seems like a catch-22 ATM if they don't take action the Israeli blockades stay in place, if they DO take action Israel invades on the premise of self defence and ignorant people sit back and applaud their actions.
What gives Israel the right to allow only basic humanitarian items the be imported into Gaza, to cripple the country's economy by not allowing exports, to force the country's inhabitants to live in poverty because they won't allow in items that will repair the water and sewege systems? I'm sure that ANY replies to this question will contain something like "The fact that Hamas launches rockets into Israel - killing civilians gives Israel the right" - if you truly believe that then;
A) In turn does not the Israeli blockading of Gaza give Hamas the right to fire rockets into Israel? After all the humanitarian crisis there is killing far more than the four people who have died from Hamas rockets recently.
B) What does Israel hope to achieve by launching a short term raid into the Gaza strip, it won't stop the rockets because for every member of Hamas they kill, two more civilians will be disallusioned and join Hamas.
I think, as a possible solution, that;
1. Israel should withdraw completely
2. Israel should lift all blockades and allow all imports and exports into/out of Gaza
3. Either a temporary (1-2 years) peacekeeping operation by the Arab League or a joint Arab League and UN peacekeeping mission.
