How can a single opinion determinate the quality of a game?It would be better if we switch to gamerankings.

Realtop

.... this isn't black and white... this is a thousand shades of grey.... GR doesn't work because of so many different reviewing standards amongst different platforms and magazines... Some use a 5 average scale rather than 7 average scale(5.0 is the average score not 7.), some use the star system... it's just too inconsistent... Said this at least 30 times in the past week.

Also, CNET lost 1,000 subscribers. You REALLY think they will risk losing anymore for the sake of advertiser money that PALES in comparison to the subscription revenue? REALLY? GS is clean and that guy "gamespot" on that one other forum who supposedly posted an "inside story" is complete BS. He even said that he was scared because he thought he would get fired. That's BS. CNET would basically destroy GS, losing a TON of money if they would do anything. Also, him saying that to begin with would have launched internal investigation and posting online is the LEAST anonomous thing you could ever do... You can track IP's so easily. Posting on a website as "gamespot" won't save them from being found out if someone REALLY wants to know... Just seems like someone trying to take advantage of this whole situation. Just like everyone on this website trying to say that GS reviews of the past now count for nothing. Seriously, you people are PATHETIC. Get over yourselves. We don't know ANY of the facts. Jeff had a long running history of unprofessional reviews and this was one of the biggest ones... You CANNOT EVER say "If you can get this game for less than full price, go for it, but otherwise don't buy this game." HORRIBLY unprofessional wording right there. If he had said "If you really like what you see this game may be for you. Rent this game to see if you like it before you buy it just to make sure you enjoy it." That would have prevented everything. Jeff is blunt, and I DO respect him for it but it is quite obvious that he is unprofessional sometimes.

I voted gamerankings but I think IGN or Game Informer would be better.

Recent events seem to suggest that I was right when I thought the R:FoM score and GeOW scores were tweaked...

I've never said that GS reviews are bad or something, i just think that it's plain stupid to base your personal opinion on a single review. I'ts majority that counts - you know?

To all you people who keep saying that GR isn't constant, who freaking cares? Most of the games will fall into their AAA, AA, A, and other categories when averaged out. Very few games will scorewise be fluctuating back and forth between thresholds. So it's BS how you all keep harping on the changing due to some games going through it.

All you people who hype games just care that it's AAA, AA, A, etc. Who cares if it's 97% or 94%? It's still AAA.

Zhengi

The main complaint is that there are instances where a game can start off AAA, then drop to AA, then go back up to AAA.....etc. It would get annoying.

Right, but this doesn't happen with the majority of games. It happens to a few of them. And even if it did, it just makes it more unpredictable and perhaps even fun seeing a game go from meeting hype to flopping to meeting hype again. Systems wars would explode.

So instead of choosing a system that works with most games, people are going to let the few games that fluctuate between scores be the major detriment?

Yeah, hey, I'm with ya....voted GR.

It's not like only using GS for score didn't have it's obvious flaws either. No system is perfect. It's our job to pick the best of them......and now that is GR.

The minute I found out a TONY HAWKS GAME got a 10, I stopped trusting GS.

Along with reviewsLegend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Ratchet & Clank, Mass Effect, Metroid Prime 3 and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, its clear the site had no credibility since Greg K left anyway.

Most of the old reviewers are gone and reviews only seem to take up a single page now. Its been months since I remember reading a review that stretched out to three pages.

....

I never said that but lets see... 2,000 x 2.00 x 12 = $48,000. Now, do you think Edios spent $50,000 for ads for this ONE GAME? Overall, ads make a bigger profit but subscriptions are bigger than any single games ads. This is a prime-time television slot, this is a slot on a gaming website that has to share time with several other ads...Buying out would need to outweigh the potential loss of customers. Next time it happens, IF it happens (which it won't) there would be THOUSANDS MOREsubscribers cancelling. Anyone thinking that GS scores are for sale like that after this scandal is mistaken... Things will continue on as before. People treating this like some horrific terrible thing are blowing it way out of proportion... I say, we wait for the FACTS to come out. Not the supposed "facts" from some anonymous poster on some random website where some random person can easily impersonate a gamespot employee just to cause some controversy....

This vote only has the quickly, "first thought that comes to your mind but actually sucks" options.. The REAL one (if the mods actually ever approve it....) will have different choices like Compilation of IGN, Eurogamer and GS rather than GR without having GR as an option due to inconsistancies within the scores.

I suggest we simply use our own average of three sites (which ones to use would be determined later), which would allow us to bypass all of the negatives of GameRankings (a plethora of sites that tend to contribute atrocious reviews) and the negatives of individual sites (the erratic nature of individual gaming site reviews).

No one is going to want take the time to average out scores and have to wait for each review..

Anyways, the abnormally low or high reviews balance each other out.

So it's been decided. From now on we use GR.

uh... not really... also, that doesn't happen with PC games... Pc Games would ALWAYS be rated lower if GR was used because PC Game Journalists actually have standards... IGN, Eurogamer, and GS or it stays as is. Those are the only two actually viable options....

What ever sw decides it definitely shouldn't be GR.com. what all you who vote for gr are saying is that you don't like swars the way it is right now and you want it to die out. If we choose Gr.com there would be no flops that make sw fun. no long discussions on why ratchet and clank really is an AAA game or how mass effect deserves a higher score. what you see as system wars would be gone. Long gone and dead. is that what most of you want, a dead un-fun sw? You voting for Gr.com, your pretty much saying that because if sw went with Gr.com it would die out. Sw is never going to be the same, but lets not just let it die. lets keep it how it is and stay away from Gr.com. Unless of course you want it to die out.

GR has to be used from now on. GS can't be trusted and Metacritic doesnt have as many reviews as GR and GR breaks it down further to decimals. I think that GR is easily the best source to use. And as the poll shows is the majority.

GS scores are useless yes, and I would prefer GR scores to be used instead. However, if a mod hasn't paid any attention to this yet, I'd say you should just give up.

No, they didn't. Try again. This thread's title started off as "Unofficial vote of using GS scores on SW"

The thread title has now transformed into something a bit different. This was always an unofficial conversation and will always remain as such.

There has been no official discussion or vote to this end since the Jeff G. fiasco...and an unofficial thread will not suddenly become "official" because of deception (changed thread title & OP) and desperation of those trying to avoid ownage (yes, I'm looking at you two).

Epic fail.

What makes people think that a bunch of smaller sites is any more credible than a big site like GS? For e.g Assassin's Creed's score in GR dropped from 98% to 80 something after the embargo on the reviews was lifted...

How'bout not using scores at all? :o Instead we could actually discuss about the games and their strong and weak areas instead of just referring to someone elses opinion.

I was trying to look for this thread yesterday, Since people were saying there was no vote.

And those people got owned big time. What's even worse for them is that GameRankings is the clear winner.

No, no, good sir, the epic fail is on your side. People said there was no vote. What is this then? Official or not, there was a vote and people disregarded that simple fact. Not that it will account for anything apart from the fact that the majority of GameSpot users would prefer to use GameRankings.

Furthermore, it's the people who stick only to GameSpot that are the ones that avoid ownage (yes, I'm looking at you and everyone else that sticks only to GameSpot). I mean, yes, this is GameSpot, but in the real world, things go a bit differently. GameSpot acts as some sort of escapist world where people can make fun of Twilight Princess, Mass Effect and Ratchet & Clank despite them actually all being great games.

Being in denial about the above does not change the fact that, in the real world, all three of those games met hype and are indeed awesome games.

Epic fail.

Unofficial does not suddenly become OFFICIAL.

Can you get that through your head?

If everyone in the United States gathered together TONIGHT and took a vote by show of hands who'd like the President to be impeached, guess what happens to the President? He smiles and laughs. Wanna know why? Because it's not an OFFICIAL vote.

For a conversation like this to be official, it has to go through the proper protocols and channels.

1.) It certainly can't start off by calling itself "the unofficial thread" to do something. it means people won't take it with the same level of seriousness.

2.) It has to be recognized by one of our moderators (as has been done many times in the past, when this stupid idea was shot down before)

3.) It has to have a timetable for voting.

4.) An official tally has to be taken after the official voting period expires.

5.) The change would be added to the System Wars stickey

Do you see none of that has happened?

Can you comprehend why?

It's because this is not an official thread. You cannot derrive something "official" from something birthed with the premise of being "unofficial" that is also without sanction or recognition.

The fact that you can't see this most basic and simple truth (unofficial =/= official) is what will continue to make your cries to the contrary funny.

If you want an official vote (which you seem to), I'm sure you can PM cake, casey, Omni, JakeT or someone and see what's necessary to get that going.

Otherwise, give it up. You can't make something unofficial suddenly official because you want it to be.

/perspective.

Sounds like the best way to me.

Because strengths and weaknesses are not universal.

Scoring is a common denominator throughtout YOUR LIFE. Since when does gaming become exempt? Let me give you some more perspective (since you both seem to need quite a bit of it):

1.) Your homework is SCORED.

2.) Your SAT exams will be SCORED.

3.) Your ACT exams will be SCORED.

4.) Your future college will take all of what you've done in school (academics, extra-curriculars) and your application and assign a SCORE to it...if you're within a certain SCORE RANGE, you'll automatically get into the final possible pool of applicants or automatically get in.

5.) Your college work will be SCORED.

6.) Your college GPA is a SCORE.

7.) When you get your first job, the human resources department will assign a SCORE to you, based on your various qualities and quantities.

8.) When you get ready to buy your first car/house/condo/big-ticket-item, people will look at your credit SCORE. They will determine what your interest rates should be based on that FICO SCORE.

Do you need more examples?

How about the gaming industry, movie industry, sports and entertainment in general ALL run, in essence, on SCORE.

Or perhaps you also feel the New England Patriots and NY Giants can settle their differences by discussing the matter? Talking about their pros and cons and coming to a general conclusion?

No, sir, life is about scores. it's how you tell the difference between a C and a C-. Yes, both are C's, but there is a difference.

Suggesting we should do away with scoring is poorly considered at best.

Where on Earth did I say it was official? Read the first post of this quote chain. People said there was no vote. They were wrong. Furthermore, the vote clearly indicated that people would prefer to use GameRankings instead of GameSpot, but since it wasn't official vote, that won't happened. The only thing we gathered from this vote that the majority would like to use GameRankings.

You are clearly taking things out of context because I never once said that there was an official vote. I jokingly claimed ownage to the people that said that there was no vote when in fact there was. What's even worse is that clearly the majority wish to use GameRankings.

Stop riding around on the the word "official" when I never implied that it was official. Can you not understand that? People said that there was no vote but there was. Official or not, there was a vote. The vote doesn't mean much because it wasn't official. All it does is imply that the vast majority would prefer to use GameRankings.

I hope I have repeated myself enough in this one post. Nowhere do I say "Haha, official vote, everyone owned, LoLoLoL". I am simply laughing at the people who said there was no vote, official or not, when in fact there was one! Namely this one!

The fact that you can't see this most basic and simple truth (that I never said that this vote was officlal) is what will continue to make your cries to the contrary funny.

Otherwise, give it up. You can't make something I didn't say suddenly seem like I said it because it would fit your argument.
