Poll The Legend of Zelda vs Metroid (68 votes)

The Legend of Zelda 65%
Metroid 32%

Time to answer the eternal question: which franchise is better?

My answer: Zelda. It is the greatest franchise ever, it is highly consistent (the DS and Wii games notwithstanding) (Twilight Princess is a Gamecube game far as I am concerned, incidentally), and while Metroid is awesome, it, like everything else, can't come close to the glory of Zelda.

Definitely Zelda unless we're only comparing Skyward Sword. SS having mandatory motion control ruined it for me.

If we were to compare Skyward Sword to a Metroid game, it would be to Other M.

As bad as Skyward Sword was, Other M is a whole different can of shit :-3

Metroid was better on the NES. Zelda has been better on every other Nintendo platform.

@charizard1605: I'll take your word for it as the last Metroid I played was the first for Gamecube.

The two bottom Ips of Nintendo, which rises above the toilet the most. I'll have to think hard for this vote.

That's like asking to chose between my 2 kids.

I will say for both: the 2d ones are way better than the 3d ones IMO.

I stopped liking Zelda with Majora's Mask and Metroid with Prime 2. Both these games are so similar it sickens me because of how tedious they are. And I absolutely hate the deja-vu settings of light and dark worlds that Nintendo loves to use on their games so much too.

Of all Nintendo's games Metroid has the most potential, they just need better writers to avoid what happened with Other M. But since they don't believe in stories their games will never evolved beyond childish stuff.

hard to believe that a Nintendo fanatic is saying something like this. Have you ever played Zero Mission, Super Metroid, Fusion or the first one from the Prime series? Because I'm pretty sure that if you do your opinion might change.

They pretty much use the same design idealogies, but one franchise has used side-scrolling, and FPS gameplay while the other uses top-down, and 3rd person gameplay.

I'd say I'm an equal fan of both so far.

This is a tough one. I'd say Zelda's been better overall, but it never reached the heights of Super Metroid or Metroid Prime.

Neither games are big sellers even when they're good.

Not like it's accurate or anything, VGChartz lists like 17 million Metroid units sold while Zelda has like 70K+ for the tracked Zelda games sold, again not like it's accurate but it doesn't need to be to point out the huge disparity between the two franchise.

Personally, I like both equally.

No, that'll be the next one which compares Super Metroid to Link to the Past, or Ocarina of Time to Metroid Prime.

Really tricky because I loved the first two Metroid Prime games on Gamecube, but Zelda: A Link to the Past may be in my top favorite games of all time.

Actually that's incorrect. Metroid sells like shit, yes, but Legend of Zelda has sold 70 million units worldwide at this point. Games like Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess (along with the NES original) were massive sellers by any yardstick, and even the lowballed releases, like Wind Waker or Link to the Past, shift a healthy 4-5 million units.

Definitely Metroid. Prime is one of my favorite games of all time and Prime 2 is almost as good. I've never actually played any of the 2D ones all the way through but that's just because I never got the games. The only Zelda I liked was Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, ocarina of time, and the ones on the DS I didn't enjoy much.

i didnt really know about metroid until the GC but the first prime is a sublime game. in my top 5 easily...right up there with the first deus ex for me. i would rate it higher than any zelda game and that is saying something because i do like my zelda. i just saw it on a shelf for 20 bucks and vaguely remember it getting some good reviews so i took a punt. really glad i did :D.

but as a series i would rate zelda higher. i have only played 2 bad zelda games (the 2 DS games). skyward sword has actually impressed me so far (though i have stopped playing it for the last few days....new laptop has been grabbing my attention. yes that is a subtle of mentioning i got a new laptop :P j/k).

its a consistently high quality series. the overall structure is getting a bit stale (though a link between worlds has improved on that...still more to do though) but within that structure the games are still very clever.

metroid is hit or miss for me. metroid prime is fantastic. prime 2 is also excellent as is 3. other M is just awful. what i played of super metroid was good but i didnt get to play a lot.

After thinking about this Im gonna have to go with Zelda. There are just more high quality Zelda games than there are Metroid games and thats not really Metroid's fault.

LTTP and Super Metroid are probably the two best games ever made but then you have OoT, Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening. I would probably take all of those over the Metroid Prime series. Hell, I might take Metroid Fusion over the Prime series.

well I address that in my post (thought said "70K" when meant to say 70 million), and yeah Metroid is shit commercially by contrast (though I love it personally)

Metroid for me. But that's probably because there hasn't been as many metroids as their been Zelda's something to think about. We can still appreciate Zelda even though it's been done far too many times, yet metroid hasn't been done enough so we can fully appreciate and feel exited about a next one. It's my take on it at least.

Not even sure how Metroid is on this poll. I've always found it to be one of Nintendo's "Weaker" franchises.
