Look what I got (as steam commercial).

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Gabe.

Hackers are the scum of the Earth. I didn't get a message yet. Not really sure what's going on. I'll check to see if the forums are back up in a bit. Poor time for them to be down considering some of the releases :(

i dont have a steam forum account. but i do have a steam account. still narly. i must keep an eye on things. at least the important info seems to have been hashed instead of stored as plain text and with systems in place now just knowing your steam account Uname and password is not enough . itll be a good test for steamguard.

They DID encrypt cc info, but not the username/passwords. However Sony handled it very poorly. There was close to no info for weeks, then they went from "oh no no don't worry it's prolly just maintenance" to "oh yeah we may have a tiny problem but don't worry your cc info is fine" and finally "we don't know what the damage is, we have no idea how it happened" before being honest.

It's a bad situation no matter who it happens to.Somebody screwed up and unfortunately the customers paid for it. People seem to forget though how long Sony waited before they admitted there was an issue. That just made matters worse for them. That announcement comes from Gabe, the top dude at Steam and it's pretty timely so no, I'm not going to be as harsh on them as I was on Sony.

Sony screwed up so bad, it's kind of hard to compare and I think it's pretty hilarious at how some people will look at every website hack and try to act like it will lessen the massive screw up from earlier this year.

Meh I can somewhat understand how Sony is hesitating with releasing a public statement how they got hacked before ensuring it's absolutely nessecary to inform the public. It's not the right thing to do but if there is anyway to resolve any problems without damaging your company's name I can see why they would try that first.

No need to make things up :P

Also, I think the last time I used my card on steam was when I had a previous card. It's since expired, so I'm not too worried. Hopefully everything works out as well as it can under the circumstances.

PSN DID encrypt the CC numbers, and they hashed the passwords as well (which is actually superior to encrypting as you can't back generate the passwords from the hash).

Yeah, the vast majority of these compromises go unreported by the companies, something like 80% iirc from an article I read back then. Sony was out of luck though, their inexperience with this kind of thing was quite baffling. In the end I'm sure they learned quite a bit from all of it.

Sony kept quiet for 6 days. There first statement on the issue was very similar to valve's actually, 'we've been compromised, there is the potential for the hackers to have gotten at X but we don't know yet'. As well, Valve's password are no better protected than Sony's were, both were hashed. Whether Valve's security is any better remains to be seen as we don't know why the forums were breached yet.
