Square Enix: ps3/xbox360 long life cycles "worst idea ever"

in an interview with gameindustry james merceron chief technology director at square enix he opened up on mirosofts and sonys continued delay of next-gen consoles calling it "the biggest mistake they have ever made". he believes that thanks to these longer life cycles its actually promoting their competition form ninty, from pc, from iOS, from even web browers get that much stronger and that much harder to compete with as they have refused to evolve while the others continue gathering mommentum.

he also talks a bit about where he thinks ninty is headed as a gaming company and a little brief bit at the end on hitman absolution and tomb raider.

from a consumer POV im actually not bothered bout the longer cycle as long as companies still give me good, clean fun games, thats all i'll ever ask for and considering devs moanin this gen was too expensive wouldnt a longer cycle actually be beneficial so y'know they might be better prepared for the next hardware leap?

probably a typo since you know FF14 was a mess, and you know that 5 comes after 4 when we're counting :P

im kinda both ways with next gen, on one hand i want the gen to last a little longer since i feel that these consoles still have a little left to offer, and on the other hand i believe its time to release the next gen already (i mean 6-8 years is long enough).

While I do agree that this generation has gone on long enough, I don't think they should be the ones talking, considering how they annouce games that won't be out for the next decade :roll:

I'm kinda caught in the middle about moving to the next gen.

I think Nintendo is timing their new console well considering the Wii but I can understand the prolonged life cycles of PS3/360. There are dozens of good games for me to still play in this gen.

Some of their handheld games have been really good.

I also fail to see how having familiar architecture is a bad thing to work with.

Besides, although I'm not thoroughly impressed by the long life cycle, I appreciate it in the same way. I'm a college student who will probably not be entering gaming until almost mid way through the generation because I don't have money to drop on just anything anymore hoping that the system will be worth the cost of admission.
