Sony's best selling exclusive fails to dent top 10 sales list.

Since the launch of PS1, and through to PS4, no 1st party Sony game has made it into the top 10 best seller list.

In fact, we have to go all the way down to 18th before we find Spiderman.

With Sony fans raving about how exclusives are the main reason for buying a PS4, why aren't there any exclusives selling better?

Even Halo 3 fares better for Xbox, coming in at 8th place, while COD dominates both platforms despite Xbox having the "bro shooter" console reputation.

What in your opinions are the reasons that PS owners prefer 3rd party games?

sony built their brand on 3rd party. Most people that buy playstations do it for 3rd party and 1st party to them is an afterthought.

the opposite of nintendo where people always liked their 1st party more than 3rd party.

@fedor: Not attacking OP, just answering your question. Most gamers are casuals playing Call of Duty, GTA, Assassin's Creed, and Fortnite etc but that doesn't change the fact that exclusives sell systems. Otherwise it wouldn't matter what system you bought since they'd all have the same sh*t

It's amazing to see Guitar Hero and Rock Band on the lists when they are basically dead right now.

@sealionact: Do Sales = Quality? Is GTA 5, which sits at 100 million copies sold, better than your favorite game? As stated in my previous post to @fedor most gamers are casuals. As gamers that are truly passionate about this medium that judge every aspect of each game to the best of our abilities and hold developers to a higher standard our tastes are niche

"most gamers are casual" ... yea that's why they pick up third person action games.

Maybe, just maybe the third party games are just flat out better. Could be a product of the fact that Sony's exclusive library this gen has been incredibly tunnel visioned into a specific subset offering little variety to anyone.

@sealionact: It may be about genre tbh. I can't speak for everyone but everyone isn't playing and buying games for a rich story, drama, lots of cutscenes, and an open world. The open world's have flooded the market to the point that even series that used to be great just have to change everything and go open world. I'd say the average gamer wants something that takes less focus and commitment. That's why GTA's, NBA 2K's, Madden's, FIFA's, and COD's will forever rule sales charts. That's what everyone is playing. Those 3rd person, story-oriented, action games with RPG elements are still winning awards and selling millions, though, so they're still very relevant. That's all I'm saying.

@kali-b1rd: You can't just lump every Sony game into this 1 category because they're all 3rd person view. They all play differently and have different subject matter. So they're all similar because of one characteristic? Right. How many different ways are there to view a game? It's not like there are really that many choices.

Sony: Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Infamous: Second Son, The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank, Spiderman, Bloodborne, and God of War are all drastically different games with different play styles and different selling points. That's variety. To say they're not is like saying that:

Microsoft: Gears of War, Sea of Thieves, Crackdown 3, Cuphead (Platformer just like Ratchet & Clank), State of Decay 2, Ashen, and Ryse are all the same when that is factually incorrect.

I am sorry but where does this article state about your header? All I see in the article is compilations of best selling 3rd party games on playstation/xbox/nintendo and made comparisons to the recent Spidey game.

You didn't include any Nintento, PC and other hardwares sales, which tells me your bias towards Sony.

I'm only seeing third party lists.

As it is, Nintendo's list is in the link, and pc isn't in the list of best selling console games....because pc is not a console.

Also, it's not "my list". These are NPD figures. If you think that they are biased, then you probably need to ask yourself why do you think that.....

The other day I learned a cousin I rarely see owns a ps4. I asked him what games he owns. NHL (every year, he loves hockey), CoD, Project Cars, and GTA 5. I asked him why he doesn’t own the exclusives like Spider Man, Knack, or Zero Dawn. He said he doesn’t know much about them and they don’t interest him. ‘I like what I like’ he claimed. I asked him why he bought a ps4 over an X1. He simply said the ps4 was a hundred dollars cheaper otherwise he would’ve bought it over the ps4 because he enjoyed his 360.

I think casuals need to to be heavily marketed to and priced accordingly. But they don’t buy many games or take chances in unfamiliar territory. Are they really worth it? Next year he’s buying the new Xbox so we can keep in touch. He doesn’t have much loyalty to the Sony brand.

Saying Spiderman is the highest selling superhero game ever in the us, is about as relevant as saying FIFA is the highest selling football game. Pretty bleeding obvious to me seeing as there's only been a handful of superhero games.

In fact, as impressive as it sounds, the rest of the list includes Lego Spiderman, Lego marvel superheroes and....infamous 2. Lol.

Still, it's a great achievement. Right up there with Flight Simulator being the best selling flight simulator game....
