Since profits have never come even close to making up for the losses, Microsoft isn't making jack shit off the brand. Its only going to get worse since the XO will create losses for a very long time. Now if the 360 couldn't recoup the losses, what makes you think X0 will.

As for Sony? They have seen losses as well however their loses have little to nothing to do with their gaming division.

Most of it is from their television market. And a big chunk of it which people ignore are deferred tax credits. Basically money they never made to begin with but still have to report as losses.

I am going to assume you do not have an understanding of either finance or accounting. The losses from original Xbox are irrelevant in assessing the success or otherwise of the 360 from a financial perspective. Or from an X1 forward investment perspective.

Similarly, one does not make decisions at Ford about the current viability or future prospects of the Mustang by adding up the results of all the years since it was introduced in 1964.

Uh WTF? If a division has consistently lost money...then yes the company does look at that as part of the viability of the line. Not future "predictions".

Sony continues to be losing money in their games division. 8million last quarter to be exact.

Keep trying and please educate yourself.

Um, that article has nothing to do with Xbox/Kinect. There is also no reference to Forbes it comes from Business Insider.

Also why are you deflecting on Sony's failures currently???

Figures lie, and liars figure.

Keep trying Sony Fan. Maybe Sony can sell more buildings.

Figures only lie to lemmings when they are not pro Microsoft. Does it feel good worshipping a plastic box?

And that chart shows Microsoft hasn't recouped their losses not only from just the first console but the second console as well. What good are 360 profits when you had to take an even bigger hit to get them? That puts you still in the red. It will get worse with the Xbox One because the first few years at least will be even more loss.

That quote wasn't from that article. It was a link they had in the article which I unlinked. The quote was what was important...the source was Forbes which I gave you. The year was 2013...which I gave you.

And just because I don't kiss MS' ass doesn't make me a Sony Fan. I buy all the consoles. If I were a fan of any console maker...it was SEGA back in the day. Still think the DC was the best ever.

First year maybe, but going forward with Live and selling each system at a profit, the business end of the Xbox One will do very well even if overall sales lag behind the PS4 who are selling at a loss in hopes of gaining traction trough services, ect. There's no worship here, but common sense.

Answer me this. What were the "Killer" PS2 launch titles?

Sony also already gave two new IP's this year while Microsoft gave none.

Releasing great games at launch is a huge waste of money and releasing something like TLOU on the next gen instead of the current gen most likely means less than 1 million sold instead of the 4 million it already sold.

They didn't have any. They also were going up against two crippled companies in Sega and Nintendo when the PS2 launched. Playing against the juggernaut MSoft is an entirely different matter.

Please stop comparing the PS2 era to this upcoming one. Sega was bankrupt before the Dreamcast even launched much like Sony this go around. Nintendo was also in the crapper with the GameCube and MSoft did not launch their first system until a year after the PS2. Nothing is similar about that gen and this one.

Oh come on be honest. Juggernaut? MS only leads in NA. That's not juggernaut. And Sony has either caught up or passed MS in consoles sold with one less year on the market. Juggernaut my ass.

As far as a company MSoft is bigger than Sega, Sony, and Nintendo combined. Their Xbox business is a babe in the woods compared to Sony and Nintendo and yet they took market share from Sony last gen almost crippling the company.

Like I said earlier I don't want to see the PlayStation brand fail but man it is looking very grim at this point.

LOL at gloating over a companies money. How did MS money help them with Zune?

LOL at gloating over a companies money. How did MS money help them with Zune?

It didn't. Zune was a failure, and the Surface is struggling mightily. Windows Phones aren't doing well. Xbox 360 lost its first month in years to the PS3.

And yet MS is worth likely twice the combined worth of Sony, Nintendo, and Sega. They made a very nice profit this last quarter.

http://www.channelbuzz.ca/2013/10/microsoft-cloud-device-company-posts-strong-quarterly-earnings-8136/

"Microsoft Corp. surprised the market with a stronger-than-expected earnings report that shows a jump in its business-class software and cloud products, as well as an uptick in adoption of its Surface tablets and other devices.

Earnings for the first quarter ending in September were up 17 percent to $18.5 billion over the same period in 2012. Moreover, profits rose a strong 16 percent to $4.5 billion, driven mostly on the sale of its cloud services — Office 365, hosted servers and Azure platform — as well as server software.

Even better for Microsoft: Its Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 are seeing stronger than expected sales. The uptick in demand shows Microsoft can compete in the mobile device segment as fading interest in traditional desktop and laptop PCs continues to drag down demand for its Windows operating system.

“We are seeing lots of consumer excitement for Xbox One, Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, and the full spectrum of Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone devices,” outgoing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement."

No gloating here. MS is just a juggernaut financially and in very good shape as a company. Its as much a fact as the PS4 is more powerful than the Xbox One. Can't fight facts. But we don't play financial spreadsheets anymore than we play specs. We play games. Neither system will come close to failing, but MS sees the One as a long term investment in getting in your home livingroom. If it fails they'll eat it and keep going cause they're business model is set to win day one on every damn purchase. The PS4 means far more to Sony as that company is in very bad financial shape. Selling real estate to pay bills speaks volumes. The only people that will be sad if the One fails are people like me who want the system. MS will simply move on to whatever else is on the drawing board. The PS4 cannot fail for Sony. It can't. Period. They cannot afford for it to fail. Did any division in Sony made a profit last quarter? Like even one? Even the movies or music?

No wonder Sony is increasing the fee to play online games by $50. That's a lot of extra money in Sony's pocket.

Good thing their fans were so willing to bend over for it.

This is dumb. The Xbox first, and the Xbox 360 both sold at a loss, the former the whole gen, and sure, the 360 got back up faster to making a profit, which you are ignoring because moo, but the 360 still sold at a loss.

The X1 will break even or make profit at launch per console sale, a COMPLETELY different outcome unless they sell less than the Wii U in the same time frame as the current Wii U sales data.

Also Sony at the start of this gen, the PS brand lost more money faster and the most for a long time, of any division even the TV division until later.

If any of you actually read the article, you would see that the games division losses are mostly due to the Vita price cut and differences in currency exchange rates. You fanboys are really trying way too hard.

However, the 5.1% increase transforms into a 14% decrease when the tumbling value of the Yen becomes stacked against the Dollar and Euro.

Nothing but great new there.

LOL. Do you even know what you are looking at with that graph?

Do you know that X360 era would start in FY06 on that graph? And even then you would need to remove $150MM of the FY06 losses which occurred before 360 launched?

And that FY13 has come and gone so you can add $850MM on the positive side based on the divisions profit for FY13?

And that if you then update the stupid graph, the division has already passed into positive territory during the 360 era.

Of course, none of that matters since there are multiple products within the EDD division as there have been with the various divisions PS3 has been in since launch; meaning that none of us has the information to determine the actual profitability of either of PS360. Which renders that graph totally meaningless.

So again, it appears you have no understanding of finance or accounting.

Last time I checked, Sony has an overall profitability of 1.4%, and its gaming division contributed only 2% to that measly profit. The profitability of the gaming division itself was around 0.2%. It really is quite abysmal compared to Microsoft's gaming division and Nintendo. Sony will literally be more profitable if they just become a life insurance company.

ive been saying this over and over. Sony made a bad decision to lose $60 per console this generation.

They are in no position to do such a thing. They need to wipe the floor this generation or there will be no ps5.

I hope they succeed because xbox needs competition.

Sony game division weak? What does MS have besides Halo? Gears of War is done and Forza is a clone of GT.

Sony sold 78 million according to the IDC and the Xbox 360 has 79 it is the SAME!

And because Sony is a better company the PS3 will destroy the XBONE

The only titanic that's sinking is the Xbox division. http://microsoft-news.com/activist-shareholders-may-force-microsoft-to-sell-xbox-bing/

And the future doesn't look that bright with Xbone.

PS4 >>>> dogsh*t>>>>Xbone

Also lol at you thinking Sony will go bankrupt. They're still in the green thanks to their life insurance division. Look at this interview, Sony is ok.

Loading Video...

But hey since you're so far up in MS's ass why won't we make a bet?

If Xbone sells more than PS4, I'll leave SW. If PS4 sells more than Xbone, you leave SW.

In the mean time have fun with your weaker, more expensive, casual orientated, 720p inferior gaming experiences, cablebox. LOL

Sony game division weak? What does MS have besides Halo? Gears of War is done and Forza is a clone of GT.

Sony sold 78 million according to the IDC and the Xbox 360 has 79 it is the SAME!

And because Sony is a better company the PS3 will destroy the XBONE

No it won't, Game sales are pretty much the same, and casuals will love the XBONE.

Stay mad, PS4 retiring in 2016

Casuals tend to be the less expensive console.

American brand

American football on it

TV on it

Videogames on it

It's the meaning of Casual.

MS isn't exactly beloved here....and casuals don't pay that much attention to console launches. I can say the commercials here so far are only about games. Which doesn't really differentiate it. And again...cost.

Everything you just mentioned is what everyone already has, minus the videogames.

Exactly, casuals don't give a crap about MS's awful reveal and the 180s, they see the Football, they see the action packed games, they see the graphics, and they see the American brand.

One single unnecessary box. The only thing I don't have right now is a new game console. Two things decide which I buy....games and cost.

You are inserting your opinion in the argument, the casual sees different things from you.

Right...they go by price. Football is on TV...it's not necessary to have an Xbox to watch it.

Are you seriously ignoring everything else the XBONE can do?

Obvious Sony fanboy, can't see how a casual is gonna react to a well known, reliable brand.
