Poll Sony ends the official Killzone website - end of franchise? (55 votes)

Bye bye Killzone 55%
It'll be back some day 45%

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/killzone-website-no-longer-available-thanks-players-for-their-support/1100-6486081/

Killzone developer Guerrilla Games had a smash hit with 2017's Horizon: Zero Dawn, and the sequel Horizon: Forbidden West is set to release later this year. However, it appears the Killzone franchise may have been a casualty of this success. The official Killzone website is no longer available, instead directing players to visit the main PlayStation site in its place.

As spotted by VGC, the official Killzone site now only shows a notice page letting visitors know it has been "retired" and that it will soon forward them to PlayStation.com instead. You can no longer create or manage clans in the PS4 launch game Killzone: Shadow Fall, either, though you can still play online multiplayer in the game as normal.

"Thank you to Killzone.com's many fans and visitors throughout the years for their enthusiasm and support," Guerrilla Games said on the site.

The notice does not say the Killzone franchise has ended, though we've heard little on the franchise since Shadow Fall released in 2013. That game ended on a cliffhanger with the ISA and Helghast armies seeing renewed conflict after a period of Cold-War-like silence. A Vita game developed by the defunct Guerrilla Cambridge, Killzone Mercenary, was also well-received for its bite-sized campaign missions and engaging online multiplayer. It was one of the only successful first-person shooters on the Vita, with Resistance: Burning Skies receiving a much more negative reception.

Though it would certainly make sense for Guerrilla to focus all its attention on Horizon going forward, it does leave the PS5 without a big exclusive first-person shooter. The Resistance series has also been on ice since the early days of the Vita, with Insomniac Games now focused on Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank. However, it's now a first-party Sony studio, so anything is possible.

RIP Killzone franchise. I hope you come back some day. Killzone 2 is still one of the best FPS games. Also, shout out to Killzone Mercenary for being one of the few interesting portable FPS games I played on the Vita. Dare I say, trailblazer? 😮

No Caption Provided

What say you, SW? Will Killzone franchise be back some day? Was it a respectable FPS in your eyes?

Not surprised. Guerrilla Cambridge was liquidated years ago, Guerrilla proper is focusing on Horizon, which is a much better seller.

Casualty of HZD success? GG was on record saying they had to work on HZD because they can't compete with other FPSs like CoD and Battlefield.

What a coincidence as I’m playing through Killzone: Shadowfall right now! Just quit for today after getting slaughtered in chapter 9 😅....

Anyway...

I think it could be the end. It’s not that strong of an IP in terms of how recognized it is (I think). But it’s not a bad IP either. Sci-fi cold war is pretty cool. I’d be up for more.

I wonder what Sony executives are thinking when it comes to the FPS genre. It’s a bit odd to have nothing. Their exclusive have many similarities, a FPS would offer something else.

Perhaps there will be something for PsVR2?

The series was (in reality) what Crysis was always accused of being.

All the KZ games felt on par with 343's Halo games. Good riddance.

if they could make it more than mediocre, that would be great.

Halo started great but then went mediocre pretty fast. so KZ didnt have much to beat.

HZD effectively killed killzone. It’s a more marketable franchise and zero dawn was actually a good game. Sony has pretty much given up on multiplayer games outside gran turismo. Their focus is primarily on single player/story driven games.

The series faltered after KZ2, and Shadow Fall was just about okay. Not really surprising after Guerilla moved to HZD, and the IP hasn't been used in years.

I’ve only played Killzone 2 and 3 but I’ve enjoyed them well enough, definitely my favourite Sony FPS games. I see Shadowfall selling new for $10 Canadian here, should probably pick up a copy to have as I wouldn’t mind trying it out. The franchise will probably return later on down the road but it could be awhile.

May it rest in peace as a mediocre franchise.

Except Rico for being one of the most insufferable characters in gaming.

I liked the art direction. Has that old and used futuristic look of movies in the eighties/seventies (Star Wars, Blade Runner, Alien), but more industrial and residential, which made it feel more real. Didn't care much for the gameplay.

Now that they killed Killzone, its time to revive Haze. Halo killer needs to happen. Nvm 343i already did the job.

I don't think the Killzone games sold spectacularly anyway. The industry has largely moved on from qausi-military meathead shooters.

Change is the only constant. Only logical they would move on to newer and better things like Horizon.

FPS is such a crowded genre. I guess it does make sense to focus on their bread and butter; third person story driven games lol. But I hope we see a reboot some day...

I don't think it's so much crowded as dominated by Call of Duty, with the likes of Battlefield and Halo lapping up the rest. In such a stable and solidified market, you need a unique selling point (USP) to stand out. I don't think Killzone has enough of one.

To be frank, open-world games are now the same way; dominated by Assassin's Creed and Rockstar's games. The difference is Horizon has the USP that sets it apart. Not every game you get to fight fire-spewing, elbow-dropping robot grizzly bears with bows and arrows.

Couldn't find a source confirming that reboot.

I don't see how taking down a website means Killzone is dead forever? Killzone could very easily come back someday and Guerrilla Games spent years working on the same series, they finally got to make a new one and they wanna spend time on something that isn't Killzone for once aka Horizon series and It's completely understandable. So yeah, Killzone is definitely on hiatus right now but if God of War can come back after the shit sandwich that was Ascension, Killzone can come back someday too!

The only Killzone games I actually liked were Killzone 2, Liberation on PSP and Mercenaries for Vita. Some of the best games on their respective platforms but everyone needs to remember that Shadow Fall was a PS4 launch title, a tech demo showing what to expect on PS4 hardware and while the game was okayish, its really forgettable!

One last thing Guerrilla Games, the next time you want to return to this franchise, I'm getting sick of playing the ISA! They are the real enemies of the series and for freaking once, let me play as the Helghast! At least the Helghast knows what they are fighting for and yeah, ISA are nothing but a terrorist!

Killzone was a premium playstation experience

that runs best on ps5.

They are doing what Disney does and putting it in “the vault” so to speak. With the tensions high with Russia and China they don’t want to be insensitive.

They’ll bring back this beauty in 2-3 years to put the nail in the fps coffin for competitors and show off the true power of ps5.

For them the money now is in third person action games or third person RPGs like Horizon.

Who else, besides ID Software and Activision, is still make AAA budget singleplayer FPS games?

Killzone has always been a mediocre FPS franchise that got overhyped by a certain fanbase that values the concept of exclusivity more than the value of good games.

If Killzone is really done for, we're not losing much.

Killzone and Resistance had fully developed multiplayer modes. Killzone was a slower paced, weighty type shooter, and you had cool gadgets you can use. Resistance 2 had an extensive co-op mode, with up to 8 players! I gotta hand it to Sony. Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 were really awesome games.

@jaydan: Killzone 1 was a decent game that needed more development time, Killzone 2 was one of the best fps that gen. It's not a Sony exclusive thing, they were just good games (minus Shadow fall, that was rushed trash).

FPS's must have gone to shit from that era, then.

Oh I remember the endless Killzone 2 threads back in the day. They were almost entirely graphics threads, because there was nothing else going for the game.

I really enjoyed the Resitance series as well. Resistance FOM was the first game I played of that generation at an event showcasing the new PS3 and 360 consoles. Had an absolute blast there!

Don't forget the insane level of input lag. Everyone trying to say it was a design choice to make the game feel more "weighty and real!"... until Guerilla was like oops, we fucked up, we'll fix it. 😂

Anyways, had a bit of fun with KZ2's multiplayer. Otherwise meh, don't really care if the series comes back.

Hell yeah, make Resistance a first person survival horror/FPS and use it as a showcase for the new PSVR 2.0 :D
