Getting disowned by your family for marrying a black man isn't exactly a form of ignorance. Though I know what you're talking about. If I recall correctly it's commonly believed (or used to be) that a mixed baby between a black and an asian will cause down syndrome.

Japanese characters have ridiculous features, random hair colors, and are overall much more displaced from reality as compared to real characters. I mean just look at their eyes and any comparisons will instantly be null and void.

But what they lack in realism they make up for with dreams!

So I don't really think that the majority of protagonists are western as you say, though many prominent ones are.

I've noticed this before in anime too. Probably because Western people are more attractive and varied. That doesn't mean superior though.

Asians are not the minority in Japan. I'm not completely sure, but I think Asians outnumber Caucasions would worldwide as well.

True, but Japanese game developers don't give representation to their own people. It is pretty universal and there must be a reason that people knowledgable about it are embarrassed to admit.

Anime characters usually look neither Asian nor Caucasian but they often do share more characteristics with Caucasian people.

After Japan's defeat in World War II they adopted alot of American culture.  They got their animation from America,  and those in American cartoons look white.

Hideo Kojima is a good example.  He admires American film,  so his main character,  snake,  is a white guy with a mullet.

Its like how some whites find Japanese culture fascinating,  and only draw anime style characters,  or only watch anime.  Many people in Japan admire American entertainment and cartoons,  so they make their characters look white.

No one buys that shit anyways so it doesn't matter.

I think the Manga style of drawing isnt geared towards a particular demographic per say, cause if you observe the characters they tend to look bit asian bit caucasian as well. From a business perspective, marketing dictates that it is best to create characters the majority of audience can relate to and it has always been the caucasian race thats the staple of popular culture. If you consider that most japanese creators realise they cannot create products just for the domestic market alone, that gives some incentive into why characters design that way. From an artist perspective, it could be that it is what he or she has learnt to draw or depict from art school or whatever, when you learn skill, you do not really pay attention to the cultural assimilation that goes along with it.

Honestly TC, there really isnt any one genuine answer to this question because its a vague subject that spawns more questions than answers
