ATLUS is overrated, but despite my dislike for the two games ... it does seem like P3 and P4 are all around very high quality games that Square doesn't really have anything to match this gen. Square's biggest recent title, despite being victim to a significant amount of hyperbole, just doesn't cut it. Right now I'm hoping T3B will be a solid offering from S-E and many are counting on Versus. Who knows what they'll do.
ATLUS and S-E are both struggling through the transition to HD ... In fact ATLUS isn't even ATLUS anymore. It was bought by another company or something. The way that the companies have to navigate this gen is going to be different. ATLUS is a smaller company and is able to release games that make graphical shortcuts or don't utilize much resources, without fan outcry. In fact, they continued to release games on the PS2 for a time. S-E, on the other hand, is expected to make much more expensive products and make graphical leaps. You'd better believe that one of the major selling points of FF is it's graphics; This is what is expected of S-E. S-E thought they could combat higher costs by creating a single engine for any of their future projects on the PS3. Which backfired. It pushed the actual production of FFXIII way back, so far that they had to find a way to cut the game down to certain elements just to get it released. The good news is Square knows they messed up and they know you are upset about FFXIII. Square is a company made of real people and if anything the interviews suggest that Square is deeply troubled by the hate it gets. I don't think Square will ever get the respect back it once had (even if it deserves it), but I do think it's possible for them to turn around and release all around great games.
