best movie evar! (Resident Evil: Extinction, it's gonna be ****)

why would i wanna watch a movie that takes up only 25% of my screen?

It's obvious that is a screen of you "entering" the theater. I'm quite positive that it will fill up the entire screen...

[QUOTE="reilo"][QUOTE="3picuri3"][QUOTE="reilo"]Hah. The damage control in this thread is FASCINATING. I mean seriously people, if this had the name "Nintendo Home" or "Xbox Home," everyone would be praising the living ish out of this.

i'd be equally disappointed if it came out for any console. just happened to be Sony.

how is a Sims/Second Life like virtual 'social networking' platform where i have to pay for games and accessories and virtual space going to improve my gaming life?

i waste enough time at real social events, don't need to sit in a virtual mall full of spoiled children with PS3s pretending their Gangstas.

there's something to be said for a less public game networking platform.

Bet on it that you will be able to restrict your "Home" to your friends list. They even said in the trailer that you can set it to "invite only." That's how you can avoid them :) More pics:   Trophy Room:

only in the 'Home' area, not the public games and shopping areas.

I'm very surprised to see something that isn't branded towards the coveted male 18-34 demo from Sony.

The cell processor can compress and decompress video data very quickly I can see it being possible to compress the data and stream it to other ps3 who can decode the video very quickly so the data may not be as big as you think. so I'm sure using its very quick ram to buffer the video you would think if it were a small number of people viewing the video I'm sure there would be a limit to how many people could view it at one time it would be possible. Remeber the cell was touted for its video and image processing abilities. using the ram as a buffer mean the file would not have to be stored on the viewers hardrive. This is mostly just speculation but if sony announced the feature there has to be some way they plan on implimenting it. whether on not it works well will be for us to see.
Citan_Uzuki
even with the cell's processing power the problem comes from the size. if you want quality media the bandwidth will still be an issue. they would need to come up with an entirely new codec to make sizes small enough for the average home to be able to stream it to other users. you'll even up with either low quality video or need to have more bandwidth. i could see them allowing you to upload the media to their servers to store and share (so friends can visit without your ps3 being on) but that would likely be a fee.

[QUOTE="Bgrngod"][QUOTE="2largeadults"]What a glorious day! PS3 fans rejoicing and PS3 detractors coming up with ever-more-inventive ways of voicing their displeasure! :)

Well it's good that the PS3 gets at least SOMETHING comparable to XBL, but the infusion of the whole Myspace/SIMS thing is a bit much. I hope there is a way to get around all of this and just use a match making service to get into games fast. I hate going to the mall in real life, why would I want to do it digitally?

That's true But I'm pretty sure the designers have thought of that and have an idea in mind for those who want to quickly get to online gaming (probably just picking the online gaming option in the games' menu and not even logging onto PS Home) or Maybe a lounge for quick gaming that these Sims characters can bee line to if they're only interested in gaming Lots of opportunities here...looks exciting

SO MUCH FOR WALKING AROUND AIMLESSLY: IGN: Virtual PSP "Your Virtual PSP gives you access to all the navigation, features and options of Home." Our first taste of Home was a brief look at the 3D world that represents it. Bright and colorful, the environments look similar to a bare bones Grand Theft Auto title, only the surroundings were serene and centered on a garden and water motif. But before we could study the architecture any further, Phil keyed up the "Virtual PSP" component and we were on our way. Used as a quick navigational tool, the Virtual PSP allows users to hop between bookmarked spaces in their Home universe. Over the course of the entire 30-minute presentation, the PSP was only ever used to transition to new areas, so how much functionality this digital portable actually offers is still a mystery.

The only complaint I have about Home is it's content.

It has a lot of stuff.

Especially a 3D world, with HD textures and dozens of people at a time.

Can a 56k connection handle it?

This may be a BIG problem for SCE.

I mean, it takes over a minute to load up Nintendo's Wii Shop on a 56k connection.

Won't it take a longer time to load up Home?

They really don't need to hire someone to steal ideas, they've been doing it for years now. But I will admit, at least they steal ideas and improve upon, cause this does look pretty cool.

Didn't Second Life already do this?  I mean what is the point?  I want to play games on a machine, not watch Sony content, live Sony content and Breathe Sony content.  I would say that Sony should spend less time creating a hacked version of Second Life and more time making games.  Isn't this the same reason that people badmouth the PSP becauseit focused more on UMD movies and less on the actual games.

It's not a game... It's a network infrastructure -- think a 3D world of Xbox Live. The type of innovative networking that people have been asking for is delivered -- hell, overdeliver imo -- and people still complain. This won't stop Sony from making games.

I live in my home.  I don't need a virtual one.  And I have friends to game with.  This has not shown me how I can access friends quickly to start up an on-line gaming session.  And does anyone else see the home being a big man pow-wow?  10,000 virtual guys standing around looking like they fell out of a GAP ad, with 5 chicks sitting on the couch?  HOW DOES THIS MAKE PS3 GAMING BETTER!?!  That's the answer I want.

But judging from your posts anything bashing sony/PS3 dosen't seem to be a problem for you.  Isn't it funny how you can pick and choose when to act like a regulative authority, when in acutality you are really just one of the one's who help to promote most of the traffic.

read back through the thread a bit - to me it's just way over the top. I don't want an uber public networking system, all I wanted for my PS3 was background downloading, comprehensive friends list, background voice chat -- that's it. I don't want to jump through freaking hoops and walk through virtual malls and pay for crap for my fake crib so the people I play with don't make fun of me, lol. its just stupid.

Great idea in concept but I worry about the scalability of such a project and ultimately the cost. Does anyone seriously think that this will be the same as an mmorpg? Lets be realistic here how many users can co-exist on a server cluster? Take World of Warcraft for example there arent 10's of millions of players on one server cluster, realistically you arent going to get all the PS3 users on one world its simply prohibitive from a technology point of view. Most importantly though for a free service to maintain a massive world with its associated bandwith, server and routing agreement costs its just not gonna happen.

I do believe though that they will probably release software for the PS3 which you run on your own PS3 where you can invite x amount of friends to your virtual room. In that respect its a nice idea but not really much different from the Dead or Alive pre-game lobby. Other questions I suppose are will non-friends be able to visit? Will you be able to see the trophies etc as easy as I can se things on Live.

Nice idea but i worry about the practicalitys and I suppose what really worries me is Sonys competence as a software maker (non-gaming).

Come on people, you can't deny this is sweet. Meet people on-line who like the same games etc... Virtual guild meetings, where you can share video and audio. Just plain hanging around for fifteen minutes and see if there's any-one to chat with. Free, ok, you can buy stuff, but that's completely your choice. And it does get it's idea from other aplications, but it looks so well integrated. To those who hate, watch the keynote, see it in action and marvel. It's like a very stylish, adult, animal crossing for free...

when i first head about this, i was mad that sony had copied ninty and M$, but after seeing it, i realize that statements about it being "achievements+ miis" were gross exaggerations. PS home is clearly trying to do it's own different thing.

This thing is almost perfect, for it to sell a PS3 to me, it needs Tommy Vercetti from GTA to run around everywhere with an AK47 and kill everyone he sees, then I can't resist this.

[QUOTE="animation_imp"]Come on people, you can't deny this is sweet. It's like a very stylish, adult, animal crossing for free...

how about calling an actual friend or family member when you have nothing to do instead of looking for random people to chat with on PS Home? and don't ever say this is free.. from all accounts you'll be paying for nearly everything apart from a bare-bones home and some basic arcade games (which still hasn't been confirmed).

this IMO is just another symptom of our pathetic detached sedentery lives. It's just more people in a virtual place wasting time chatting with people they have no real connection to. it's not healthy. i guess if the majority of people in the world like myspace this should be a hit -- it's really sad though.

i love playing games, but this is just silly.
