This isn't the 80s. Companies dont exist based on pointless mascots. No consumer buys a Wii because it has Mario on the box, or an Xbox because they saw a TV ad about master chief. Ninja-HippoYou would be surprised. Parents especially seek familiar faces when looking for a game or console to give to their children. They see Mario, know he is popular, there is the purchase.

Ratchet and Clank, Kratos, Drake, Sacboy, Jak, a Helghast soldier
There is no sole mascot for Sony

That's the problem
There's no top dog, Sony just has a bunch of puppies
I don't see a problem with that
More mascots = more quality first party games

Yes, I seem to have forgoten this. But my main point still stands folks.
You need to own a PlayStation to play Solid Snake's entire story.
Its better to have alot of mascots instead of just one, it shows how PS3's audience is so varied,
For youngsters you have sack boy.
For hardcore gore fans, Kratos.
For Shooters you have Sev and Hale....And so on.
Only having one mascot kind of limits peoples perspective of what kind of games you can find on the console.
Go out on the street and ask anyone who Mario or Master Chief is(maybe not so much the Chief) and they'll 99% of the time know... ask em who Kratos or Drake is... good luck :)dotWithShoes

No, it doesn't mean that at all
No singular mascot means awful public perception with no way to link games to the console
Microsoft and Nintendo doesn't have that problem, mainstream users are able to make the link
Sony on the other hand has nothing, they have a bunch of guys that wouldn't even make the top ten if they were paired with the other companies.
The reason why they don't have mascots is because those games haven't sold well enough to warrant them. Gran Turismo is there only halo game. Its better to have alot of mascots instead of just one, it shows how PS3's audience is so varied,

Because the games on the console that sold well didn't have mascots. Gran turismo, grand theft auto, kingdom hearts, and final fantasy 10 had brand new storyline and cast. They aren't even close to being anything resembling mascots. They are, in fact, two of the absolute worst characters this gen.I'd put Nathan Hale before them any day of the week and I think he was as generic as you can get.. Not commenting on the games mind you, just the characters. For Shooters you have Sev and Hale....And so on.

Exactly.
The PS2 has a massive plethora ofgames that is impossible to imagine a single game leading a gigantic success that the PS2 was/is.
At that point of success...its the games together that makes the console shine popular.
The reason why they don't have mascots is because those games haven't sold well enough to warrant them. Gran Turismo is there only halo game.[QUOTE="Abicus7"]

The reason they dont sell well is because there is so many good games to choose from. Not every PS3 owner buys LBP, nor does every PS3 owner buy KZ2. Too bad the same cant be said for Wii owners and mario.

Yes it most certainly had a mascot
The DVD
In many countries it was the cheapest DVD player around. That's what gave it it's inflated numbers
When you said PS2 people instantly thought "cheap DVD player"

ThisPS3 has a family of Icons. Not just one person...
Drake, Kratos, Snake, Sack boy, Sev, Nathan Hale, Ratchet/Clank.. I could go on.

Not everyone should have to rely on one flagship title. Take halo away from from xbox and its nothing, Take mario and zelda awway from nintenedo they can do ok. How many exclusives has the sony lost this gen and its still cranking out new mascots.

A year lead doesn't matter at all. I think ps2 had a 20 million lead before xbox was on the market. But that was mostly due to an incredibly stacked line up. MGS2, FF10, Twisted metal, and gta 3. And you should expect sales to be higher than every console.[QUOTE="thelastguy"]

Who cares and how does that make them any less terrible?Jaysonguy is the only person who makes sense in this thread.themagicbum9720How so? The ps2 won last generation not because of a dvd player and xbox was 1 year behind. It had by far the best selling games. Grand theft auto is about as big as halo series. Final Fantasy series, and gran turismo series are also huge. It is expected that the console is going to sell better 5:1 when most of the huge franchises are on one console. Guitar hero is another game that roots were on the ps2.

Also the XBOX needed the add ons to make the DVD drive work for playback while the PS2 did it out of the box.
2 years of being the cheapest DVD player on the market made the first 2 years so inflated. Sony was lucky enough to launch the PS2 just when DVD's became the mainstream.
That was their mascot, not the bunch of unknowns they have now
Sony tried to make the BluRay it's mascot for this gen but it didn't work out
The truth is and it's already been said in this thread. Mascots are completely unnecessary these days. There are better ways to sell your product. Halo isn't popular because of Master Chief, Master Chief is popular because of Halo. The game itself is the mascot.
If MAster Chief counts for MS when he is on PC, then Snake would count for Sony.
I'd say Snake if MC counts but I generally find with Sony, they rarely stick with 1 mascot. They have a pretty diverse collection IMO as opposed to a superstar like Mario.
Crash and Spyro were great for the PSOne, but both dev teams moved to Jak and Ratchet who both represented the PS2 well, then along came Kratos to give Sony that edgy character, and now we have Nathan Drake.
Across all three Playstations, Snake remains the most popular. As for each generation, Sony is always introducing new characters, and I find they all appeal to a great diversity of fans.
Oh, my, and how can I forget Sweet Tooth? Now that's one creepy character.
-Sweet Tooth
-Kratos
-Snake
-Sackboy
-Crash
-Jak
-Ratchet
-Spyro
-Nathan Drake
Sony is not recognizable through that one mascot or that one game. I appreciate the console being the mascot to itself, and the characters being a family of the Playstation Brand.

You are comparing the japan to the pal. North america 12 months after, and 16 months after in european. Not 23 months. And the reason why it outsold the console 5:1 wasn't because it was a dvd player. They were both dvd players, and the lead by then was about 20 million difference. 20 MILLION. The reason why is because gran turismo 3, Grand theft auto series, MGS2, and Kingdom hearts. All these games sold 8 million + which are similar to halo numbers. The games on ps2 console didn't have lead characters except sold snake except their name. Grand theft auto is a bigger franchise than halo. Gran turismo is a bigger franchise than halo and kingdom heatrs sold a little less than halo. But then there is guitar hero, and other games which also had their own games which sold well too. God of war, Ratchet and clank, jak series all sold well.I personally find Playstation has it'self as it's own mascot, it's a faceless but well known name. Generations before crash was a big icon for the system but they are more well known for there third party games in the end and are most recognized as Final Fantasy platform even if it's not 100% true.Jynxzor
nope sorry, sounds like an excuse....
I'll go with Kratos. Snake has never been a exclusive character.
MrHenadonia
Actually, he has. Only games with Raiden as the main character have gone on the Xbox.

Actually, your response calling it an excuse is an excuse of itself. He gave a legit answer: Sony has no main superstar character, but have a diverse collection of characters. If you really want us to pull one main character, Snake represents all three PS's

The two things Sony had going for it was full support for the PS1 and DVD player that they touted as free
XBOX had neither of those.
I'm talking in Japan for the console launch because that's the widest margin for DVD players. In order to get a quality DVD player in Japan during the time between the PS2 and XBOX launch you'd have to pay almost twice the price of the PS2. Even bottom barrel players were more expensive then the PS2.
It's interesting how you keep on bringing up games when they had nothing to do with the PS2 sales, it was the other way around.
Companies saw the spike that happened with the PS2 and wanted their games on it, not the other way around.
Sony thought this gen everyone would run out and support it's mascot BluRay and then companies would be knocking down their doors wanting to make games for Sony's BluRay player. Sony misjudged the want and need for BluRay and devs decided to go elsewhere for their games.
Now Sony has had to ditch their mascot BluRay and their pickings for a new one is pretty scarce with the titles they now have.
I'd personally take the "family" mascot over the one with fewer.
Nintendo not only has Mario but DK, Link, Samus, Cap Falcon, Fox, and even Pikachu.
Playstation has Snake, Kratos, R & C, J & D, Sackboy, Drake, and soon Kiryu Kazuma.
Xbox 360 has Master Chief........ :|
[QUOTE="tonitorsi"]
Kratos. Followed by Drake.
Epak_
Don't forget Snake!
NO! Snake betrayued us! :P
Seriously though, do we really need a 'mascot' for every console brand? So what if the other two have Master Chief and Mario? They have no personality at all... :?
