[QUOTE="Mystery_Writer"]So now the onus on customers to check release dates before picking up a game from a store?Riverwolf007

anyone posting walkthroughs and spoilers on the internet knows the score.

this never applied to some normal bumpkin that accidentally got a copy early.

why not? a guy walks into a store, and picks up GTAV. Goes home and plays it. How on earth would he know this is illegal?

Anyone here live in NYC? I know a lot of mom and pop shops that sell games about a week early. If you want GTA5 you can most likely pick it up today.

What MS did was the right thing. All console makers should do this to prevent leaks from getting out early.

OneLazyAsian

it prevent nothing people can still play the game and release pictures and videos.

And MS has been doing it for ages. I have no pity for the dudes who forget to unplug their ethernet cable when playing a game they shouldn't actually have.

So people should automatically know better because Microsoft has always had evil policies?

because that is not the guy getting banned.

the ones getting banned are making walkthroughs and lets play vids and that kind of person knows exactly what they are doing.

I warned of this in the thread where the people were talking about how to get an advanced copy, they've done this before as well with other titles. Nobody should act surprised. Play that shot offline and don't go online again until the game releases.

This is a known policy and has been the case for over 5 years now. It's nothing new. Not sure why gamers are surprised.

The probably can easily be solved by turning off your network when you go to play the game. This way there's no way for M$ to know you are playing the game. Just pull the ethernet cable out of the XBox or turn your wifi off. Problem solved. Then reconnect it after 12 mid on Tuesday morning.

you might have achievements then prior to the release and M$ will know you played the game.

This is pretty crappy. The only possible reason for this type of action is to control what possible buyers see to maximize sales. If a user wants to see more of the game before purchasing this forces them to wait and possibly forfeit any reserve bonuses or buy it the first day.

If people want to be fully surprised by the game they can choose not to watch. THere is absolutely no benefit for any one other than the publisher for this.

online achievements seem time stamped but offline achievements not the case, even after updating online, so I don't think it'll be an issue unless they look into it and they determine there's no way this guy got 1000/1000 1 hour after release... yeah, try to avoid that

For the many who clearly didn't read the article

Pre-Release Footage: No pre-release leaked footage of any kind: Any posting of in-game footage from leaked copies of the game prior to its official release date will be taken down, regardless of how the game was obtained. This includes early unboxing videos.

Rockstar

So its likely Rockstar asked MS to ban the guy, though a complete console ban is harsh, I know I wouldn't be happy if that happened to me.

The problem is, you're not suppose to be able to get it early. It's not suppose to be played until launch day. If retailers decide to break the rules then they and whoever gets the game will have to deal with the penalties.

Not sure what Sony's policy is about that. Doesn't seem anyone bent over backwards to get the PS3 version early.

Because Micro$oft likes taking it's customers to pound town. And they're loyal customers love going to pound town. Sony hasn't banned one system. Not even torrented versions of the game. Kind of stupid since half those people probably actually got it from a stor/seller. Some of them are probably clueless when the release date actually is as well.

And those penalties are very Anti-Consumer. Especially when there isn't anything on that games box that says "Do not play until said date". For somebody who doesn't visit game sites/forums or take their hobby outside of just playing their games, there is a good chance the person might not even know when the release date is. It would be pretty shitty passing a game section, seeing a game that catches your eye, purchasing it to play only to have your account and or console banned for making a perfectly legal purchase.

In all fairness, M$ customers are more prone to bending over. Not to mention they haven't had one good game in like 3 years, so another day or two probably feels like an eternity.
