New Xbox 360 Games Will Require Hard Drive Model

Microsoft changes policy, says MMO developers can require hard drive space for games.

Microsoft announced this week that it would soon allow developers of massive multiplayer online games to require hard drive space when playing games on xbox360 despite the console maker's previous denial of such claims.

"Feel free to require 30GB for your game - that's just going to make your potential audience a lot smaller," a Microsoft representative told a group of developers while speaking at GameFest.

Effective immediately, Microsoft will not restrict the amount of hard drive space MMO game developers can use. It is unclear if non-MMO games will be allowed to require hard drives when playing future games on 360.

An estimated 20 percent of 360 owners don't own a hard drive, which is optional for those only wanting to purchase the Core model.

Developers will be able to create a single "Master Storage File" on user machines so long as the server-based games explicitly state the amount of hard drive space required on the front of the game's box.

Microsoft also said the that it will not increase the allowable size of Xbox live Arcade games which currently stand at 150 mb.

Just last week, Microsoft denied reports in an email to Gamepro that Xbox 360 Core owners would be unable to play certain games labeled with the "hard drive required" sticker.

"Every game will work with every Xbox 360 system," a Microsoft spokesman told us. That no longer appears to be the case, at least with MMO games.

Ouch! Not that there are any big MMOs coming for the 360, but still, if this spreads to other games there could be rioting in the streets. Or at least a sticky thread.

Oh, don't say that! After all, MS has GIVEN them the OPTION of getting a hard-drive. Though, if you DON'T get it, you are screwed for all the future games.

Don't worry, at this rate MS is soon going to give them an OPTION of playing their games on a next-generation format.

Wow. MMOs. That will appeal to probably appeal to less than 10% of Xbox games, and considering the fact that most people eventually buy a harddrive, I say this is awesome.

It's not like MMOs on the 360 haven't required the hard drive since day one (Final Fantasy XI anyone?)

In other words this isn't news, and it certainly isn't a "shafting"

On the contrary you just owned the entire lemming family by admitting that some portion of the 360 owners are getting screwed. This, after the whole episode of MS going on press about how they give their gamers an option? At least Sony gives gamers all they need to play the games.

First, PS3 owners say "LOL, YOU GUYS ARE OWNED BECAUSE UR LIMITED BY CORE USERS AND U CANT USE UR HARDDRIVE FOR GAMES", and now that we don't have that problem anymore, you go "OWNED BECAUSE CORE USERS ARE OBSELETE THEY CANT DO ANYTHING"

Aren't you guys full of crap? Nobody cares about core models. If they cared enough about getting these upcoming games - they can buy a hard drive.

This is old, and only applies to MMOs, not all games

MMOs for the 360 already had a HDD required sticker on them , so theres nothing new here

And btw, how are lemmings shafted, when anyone with a 360 who posts on these boards is almost certain to have at least a 20 GB hDD

I hadn't thought of that.

Honestly, this is a smart move. What would really be awesome is if MS offered a plan for core users to get HDDs cheaper somehow, and then make sure they all get one, so noone is left out. That would actually show they care a little more. I doubt it though, considering the issues they're dealing with now.

Here we go again. So, all those people who bought the Core Model because MS "offered them an option" to game at cheaper rate can stop playing games? Right.

This is after MS has been selling the Core model since last one and half years? Are you kidding me?

And we don't have a system that was promised to run at 120 frames per second in 1080p resolution, in the 4th dimension.

I can make totally irrelevant comments too.

If you dont have a HDD on your 360 you either have to be :

Short on money (understandable)

A casual player that just boguth the system to look at the graphics

I dont know anybody without a HDD and the people that will be buying these hardcore MMO games they probably already have a Hardrive so no one got "shafted"

It may be best that Sony did not offer options because then Sony may face the same problem that MS is now facing. A number of games now are using the Blue Ray drive. I would hate to see what it would have been like for the people who did not own a Blue Ray.

I think your missing the point with the "core" 360... It's meant for those instant gratification, low funds type... For example, I have a few friends that bought a core system and have "tricked" out their 360 when they had the money. A hard drive is naturally the first purchase....

Don't you think your being a little rediculous thinking core owners aren't planning on buying a hard drive? c'mon...

Oh, don't say that! After all, MS has GIVEN them the OPTION of getting a hard-drive. Though, if you DON'T get it, you are screwed for all the future games.

Don't worry, at this rate MS is soon going to give them an OPTION of playing their games on a next-generation format.

But that is ridiculous on MS part how if your short on money at the time decide to buy a core model you really cant have any fun in your games because the HDD is so important to the games.

MMOs? Since when has the HDD not been required for MMOs? At this point, there is only one MMO available for the 360 and it's FFXI. That is the one game that requires the Hard drive.

LIke the article said, only20% of 360 owners have the core system. The way you're going on, you act as if all 360 owners are getting the shaft. :|

Oh, don't say that! After all, MS has GIVEN them the OPTION of getting a hard-drive. Though, if you DON'T get it, you are screwed for all the future games.

Don't worry, at this rate MS is soon going to give them an OPTION of playing their games on a next-generation format.

What kind of options does MS give 360 core owners on where to get a HDD? $180 at xbox.com, baby!!! Nice options.

That's the 120 GB HDD.

Go to 360's website here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/catalog.aspx?st=&g=209000000&s=2&p=1&c=10

Tell me where you see anyhting but the 120GB.

On amazon the 20 GB HDD only cost about 90 $.

You don't have to buy the HDD from Xbox.com, but rather an online store. There is a 20GB HDD and a 120GB HDD...

Oh, 20GB HDD: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360harddrive/

So you didn't find something on a search function, therefore it doesn't exist?

That is the one game that requires the Hard drive.

The_Game21x

We're all very confident it will be the ONLY one too, right? Didn't we see a CoD4 cover with a HDD warning on it just a little while back?

Oh.... here it is: http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/cbebop007/call-of-duty-4-memory-hard-drive-required-36009.phtml

It also says you can use a memory card.
