Poll Is Hideo Kojima better game designer than Shigeru Miyamoto? (102 votes)

Hideo Kojima 20%
Shigeru Miyamoto 80%

Both of these men are Japanese with a long history in the industry, one is unarguably sexist, placing heavy emphasis on intrusive cut-scenes, the other creates child friendly with story as, not very important, focusing on mechanics.

Kevin Vanord (who was fired for his Witcher 3 review) wrote of Metal Gear Solid 4:

"Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the most technically stunning video game ever made. It's also a fine example of storytelling prowess within its medium, combining gameplay and narrative so slickly and beautifully that it's impossible to extricate one from the other."

Meanwhile, Skyward Sword was remarked as:

"alright"

Weighed up, is Hideo Kojima better than the Shigeru Miyamoto, at making video games?

That's as really, really hard question.

I mean, Hideo Kojima is a crazy genius. Metal Gear Solid 2 wasn't fully understood until a decade later because the game's story fucking came true. His approach to gameplay is mind bending and challenges the conventions and very definitions of the medium. I'm glad he's done with Metal Gear because whatever he does next is almost guaranteed to be gold.

Then you have Shiggy who built games that have become timeless cultural icons, essentially turning Nintendo into as cherished of a family property as Disney. He was a trend setter that inspired the trends in genres for decades to come.

What a tough choice... I can't vote, sorry.

Nope. Miyamoto is better. Nothing against Kojima, who is pretty damn awesome, but Miyamoto has honestly probably invented more genres than Kojima has directed games.

And now someone will come along and dissect the exact numerical content of my post, just so they can pick a fight over that while missing the larger point.

No. Virtually every modern game incorporates techniques invented by Shiggy including MGS.

If we're just comparing games that these guys straight up designed or directed, as much as I love Kojimas work, Miyamoto comes out on top. Of course Kojima is on top these days, but as for their overall careers, it's just clearly Miyamoto.

If we're talking about involvement and influence, Miyamoto destroys pretty much everyone ever involved in game development. It's not even a fair comparison.

They are both great developers, but Miyamoto has a lot more diverse games under his belt.

Using random Gamespot quotes, fail.

No offence to Kojima, but Miyamoto is the greatest game developer in history.

I'm pretty sure Kojima would agree with you.

I could be wrong, but I believe he once said that Miyamoto was one of the main influences that got him into game design.

Never knew that Witcher 3 review got Kevin Fired. Mindblowing information there. I'm sure you have absolute proof to back up these ridiculous claims of course.

And Miyamoto wins.

Yeah, pretty sure he just had better shit to pursue. I forgot the details.

As much as I disagreed with a lot of his reviews, he was still good at his job and one of the better reviewers at GS in recent years.

Okay I'm not sure how anyone thinks that Kevin Vanord got fired from GS just over a review. But anyways, for those who didn't know or miss out the thread that Kevin made a few months back on Games Discussion, he said his final farewell and gave his reasoning to leave GS. For those who are interested, you can read his thread here: Kevin Vanord Farewell goodbye

P.S I was there to say goodbye day one.

Edit: My vote goes to: Shigeru Miyamoto. No explanation is needed.

I think overall Miyamoto is better as very few of Kojima's games can be said to play all that well. Though that said, Kojima is a visionary still willing to push the boundaries of tech and gameplay, whereas Miyamoto's aspirations for the collective growth of the industry died out with the Gamecube.

Kojima goes from strength-to-strength (MGSV had the best gameplay of any MGS game) whereas Miyamoto hovers over Nintendo HQ homogenising all its output like some design spectre of yesteryear.

The historic award goes to Miyamoto. The future though? I think Kojima has a greater part to play in that than Miyamoto.

Hmmm... Well, you're citing Skyward Sword as a game that Miyamoto made in order to compare him to Kojima, when he hasn't worked on a Zelda game since Ocarina of Time. Miyamoto is a pioneer in video games, he essentially created them and helped, in no small part, develop the industry into what it is today.

Kojima, while a very good developer, has really only made one kind of game, and while he's nearly perfected that genre, he really hasn't explored much outside of it. Right now, you're essentially asking if Razer is a more important company than Microsoft because they make the best mouse. (read: have no idea if Razer makes the best mouse, I'm sure most will disagree, it's just the first that came to my head.... In other words, chill).

I completely agree with the gist of your post, but to be fair, Kojima has made games outside the realm of just MG/MGS. His most well known efforts aside from MGS are probably Zone of the Enders and Policenauts, but there are a few others.

I'd take any Kojima game over anything Miyamoto has ever worked on, that's for sure. Never been much into games that focus sorely on gameplay.

@ConanTheStoner:

As much as I love Ninja Gaiden, I think Itagaki hit his peak with Black. I do agree that he needs a chance to work on a game of his own without strict supervision.....which is what devil's third was suppossed to be...but we know the development hell it went through. I'd personally give him a shot based on what he did with NG....but not on my dime.

@verbalfilth:

Yeah, Black was most definitely the peak. Not just for him as a developer, but for the genre as well (Disclaimer: still haven't played through Bayo2).

I thought NG2 was cool, even better than Black in some ways, but of course there was the rush job and the drama holding it back.

Then the **** all situation that went down with Devils 3rd.

I'd just like to see what the dude can do given a stable development environment. I believe in the guy, it's just that his last two games were developed under some shit circumstances.

Joke question? Miyamoto damn near lead the console landscape with his creations. Hideo Kojima does a lot of stupid things with his games that I just can't get past.

Two of my all time favorite games was made by Hideo Kojima, so my vote goes to him.

Miyamoto made some great games as well, but he peaked in the 90's and really hasn't actually developed/created a game since Steel Diver back in 2011.
