Sometimes, you'll come across the most pleasant surprises when you least expect them, and this situation is no exception. Today, we get our first look at the Gran Turismo 5box art and packaging, in the hands of Kazunori Yamauchi himself. Our own sharp-eyed reader, GON, was first to notice the revelation in this new video from Mercedez-Benz and immediately sent it my way. Sure enough, at 0:42, we get to spy on a Polyphony Digital meeting as Yamauchi inspects a thick Blu-Ray box, complete with the obligatory small text, Sony Computer Entertainment stamp, and the new PS3 logo. Although it may not be the ultimate final product, it's very likely this is exactly what you'll find on store shelves next year.

The most curious thing, of course, is the fact that the packaging clearly contains three separate Blu-Ray cases -- one black, one red, and one blue. What could they be? While the conspiracy theorists get to work, here's a list of other interesting tidbits from the clip:

  • Gran Turismo uses one single physics calculation model, so they simply enter the parameters for each car, and the handling characteristics play themselves out within the game. As Yamauchi says, "If the original car is made well, it'll drive well."
  • We get a closer look at the 3D model of the SLS AMG in Gran Turismo 5, along with a corner from the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
  • Mercedes' narrarator suggests that Yamauchi is "considering" putting the new SLS AMG on the cover, but Yamauchi's following comments (along with the box art seen earlier) all but confirm it will be the star of the show. As he explains, it "will probably be the most exciting car in the world when GT5 is released". He also was sure to mention: "Fans of Gran Turismo 5 really have something to be excited about".

As always, if anyone is able to track down a higher-quality version of the source clip, please let me know.

Wow 3 disc must have a lot of content.

There is nothing wrong with multiple discs. Forza 3 has 2 discs so you just install the 2nd and bam it's just one disc, but most 360 owners may not have a HDD so they're screwed.

You can clearly see the black one is the game because it has that PSN symbol on it. The rest im guessing is bonus material. No chance in hell its 3 disks of game.

Do we have confirmation that every one of this discs is in fact a BluRay? I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of those is a CD or DVD with bonus content (like a soundtrack CD).

so are you completely excluding the possibility that GT5 takes 1 disk while the other 2 contain additional material (like the ones that usually come with Collectors/Limited editions?

also multiple disks are not a problem unless one has the option of partly installing a game and use just 1 disk (which is even better), something which GT5 might offer.. considering the larger amount of cars/content GT5will offercompared to Forza3 i wouldnt be surprised they used all 50GB of a bluray disk...

You say cows are owned if GT5 uses more than 1 disk... why is that?? If 1 bluray disk has a max capacity of 50GB and a game needs 70GB, instead of posting nonsense why wont you explain us common gamers and teach devs how to put 70GB worth of data on a 50GB disk..

that dosent apply here, this multiple disk are because the dev wants them just to give more extras, because a single blu-ray of more than enough, with xbox the size falls short and sometimes devs have to add more discs

Yes and no. Sure us cows has flamed the 360 because of the multiple discs, however imagine GT5 with 3 x 50GB blurays discs - I doubt it since that's ALOT of data for such a game. Even 1 dics for the main game and a second disc for "extra" it's alot, too much I'd say. But who knows?

If the standard edition is three discs, that is 150 GB on dual layer BD discs. Theres even an eight layer BD disc with 200GB, just common sense, wouldnt they go for it rather than filling up three discs ? So this information is misguiding. Thats probably some collectors edition.

25 gb per layer on the blu-ray disc. The can go upto 200 gb apparantly, i also believe i read that they have managed to make 400gb Blu-rays aswell.

Learn to read please. I said IF true. My comments are valid IF the game takes more than one disc. And cows will be owned because they bashed the 360 for the past three years over multiple discs. I cant remember half of the reasons why theyve proclaimed multiple discs are bad. Extreme effort required to get your ass off your chair and change the disc, you might loose one disc are two things ive read numerous times that spring to mind.

Thing is, standard BluRay players like the PS3 can only read up to two layers. More than that requires firmware upgrades that may not entirely be possible.

So far as I can calculate, it is impossible for the game not to fit on a BluRay disc. Remember that the PS3 has a fundamental limitation--only 512MB of RAM. The track and all cars must fit in that RAM, so the track and car models can only be so big in memory size.

I honestly think it was a marketing decision to spread out the games content and add more junk to the disk so that some people who had doubts would feel better about buying this game on top of Prologue.

If the game is in 3 disks, then lemmings would be far more pwned than the cows. as imagine how many DVDs would it need to have 150GB of content the game would have. But seriously, do people believe that the game is bigger than 50GB as forza3 being in 2 DVDs (16GB)? They could have more than 3 times the content of Forza3 (which the have 2X cars and tracks) and still have a couple of GB left. I guess the other disks are for GT-TV and stuff like that.
