That's not fair. There's no way Sony or Microsoft can win.

You know, when either Sony orMicrosoft are able to sustain an entire console on nothing but their first party, tell me. Until then, the answer is Nintendo.

It's quite sad that a big portion of Microsoft's 1st party consists of Rare IP's. If only they'd use them. I'm not saying, give it to Rare. I'm saying, create another studio to use all these high quality IP's.

Halo is by FAAAAAAAAAAAR the deepest.

Dozens of quality novels.

Comic books.

Action figures.

Cartoons. (Not halo legends, that was disgusting, I mean headhunters and the mona lisa etc.)

Huge universe with great lore and storytelling. Rivals mass effect series as the biggest fiction universe in video games.

Obviously it should say Sony or Microsoft.

But I could argue that Sony is close. I mean of all my PS3 titles only 5 are 3rd Party one of those 3rd Party titles is a PSN title the rest are First Party Sony titles.

That is out of 13 titles.

Of my Wii games only 6 are 3rd Party the rest are First Party.

That is out of 24 titles not counting my VC titles.

As great as Sony's first party has been, it doesn't have the ability hold together an entire system's release schedule like Nintendo's can.

Nostalgia fan service does play some part in the appeal of Nintendo's longer running franchises. Nintendo uses nostalgia very well.

It's really a draw down to what you enjoy.

Personally i've loved a lot of ninty games this gen.

But sony has pumped out some gooooooood games.

Maybe xenoblade will change my mind tomorrow.

What counts as First Party?

Is it owned franchises or games made soley by 1st party studios?

Because Sony owns a lot more IPS than that. Here are just some of the bigger ones you missed:

  • Ape Escape
  • Buzz!
  • Dark Cloud
  • Everquest
  • Free Realms
  • Fat Princess
  • Invizimals
  • MAG
  • Planetside
  • SingStar
  • Siren
  • Syphon Filter

That is just some of the bigger ones. As far as owned franchises and IPs they have about 4 times as many that I didn't put and you also didn't.

Sony could win if they had a good ip that they could capitalize on and have as their flagship title. Every gen, they make a whole bunch of new ip's, which is good for dev creativity i guess, but they dont have the same heavy hitters like nintendo/MS does because of that.

I would say nintendo with sony just behind.

I'd say Sony, Nintendo is great and all but they always just hinge on a select few great IP's instead of wowing us.

Well on here most just refer to it as a title developed by an Internal Studio. But outside of System Wars the industry refers to first party as any game published/develop/owned by a first party developer.

Most people on System Wars when you mention first party titles they mention now how many are internally developed.

Nintendo, by far. Sony's first party is pretty good too, though lacking originality I feel. I feel like a lot of their IPs take ideas already from the industry and combine them into a package and just make a "good" game, nothing exceptional. The only one that stands out is Uncharted. Microsoft in comparison, very weak. I don't care for Halo, but they have Halo...

Then you get into the area of does Codeveloping count? SCE Japan helped co develop Demon's Souls with From Software so does that count as a first party game? White Knight Chronicles was another developed by Sony and Level 5.

Then how do you count games like Resistance? While the main series was never developed by an internal Sony studio the Vita version is developed by Sony Bend. What about Ratchet and Clank which has zero entries developed by a Sony first party?

Not necessarily asking the person that I am quoting btw, but even with the stipulation that Sony has to have a hand in development then the TC still missed a large number of Sony developed franchises.

It really comes down to what you like to play. And even though I hardly ever play nintendo games anymore, they win for best variety, none of thier games have depth (except metroid maybe?).

I usually just use the real world definition. Any game that is published, developed, or owned by a first party developer.

But usually if a First Party developer developed a game or published it they usually also own the IP.

Its the way it should be. Nintendo should have the most ips, they've been around the longest by far. Then you have Sony who came next, and finally MS the newest of the three to the home console market.
