Poll Can Sonic Mania get a 10? (105 votes)

AAAA (10/10) 10%
AAA (9/10) 30%
AA (8/10) 33%
A (7/10) 14%
Below A (6/10 or lower) 11%

Everything about this game looks utterly fantastic. I don't even like Sonic- but this game is making me nostalgic for something I never cared for. It looks like fantastic tight 2D platforming with a complete nailing of mechanics, something Sega has been consistently unable to deliver on when it comes to Sonic for over a decade now.

But this game- everything about it looks utterly great. Now add the general renewed nostalgia around Sonic these days. Throw in the fact that this game looks as good as it does. Throw in the fact that it will be a cheaper game than full price- can it actually get a 10? Does it have a shot? What do you think it will get?

Not only does this game not have a platinum trophy, it doesn't even have a gold trophy.

It just has 15 bronze and 3 silvers.

Gonna get this on the Switch so I can finally have some use for the dang thing

You got a Switch without interest in its best games or something? That would be weird..

Game got more than I thought, predicted an 8. Never really liked Sonic though, so I'll most probably pass.

Well after I beat Zelda, I traded it in it's not like I was gonna play it again. I have MK8D but haven't touched it in months.

So far I am loving it (I am playing the PS4 version).

I wish I had a Sega Saturn controller.

I can't get over how damn good this soundtrack is, because I've been literally listening to it nonstop all morning.

Gotta admit, I'm not really liking it so far. That's how I feel whenever I replay the Megadrive games. It always gets more fun when I repeat the levels.

First playthrough of the levels though and I don't like it.

Only played a few zones so far. Easily my favourite Sonic game since Sonic 3. My only complain is the timer. Sure, it was always there, but the levels are so huge now, i would love to explore them at my pace.

This reaffirmed my faith in original sonic. It's been so long since I felt this about the franchise I was beginning to doubt myself but no, one of the best 2D platform series of all time.

Some observations:

They even paid tribute to Master System Sonic (some mountains used from sonic 2 ms).

The 3D stages are the greatest they ever done. I usually don't like these.

The music is godly.

It's a game. You play it. For fun.

The Chemical Plant Boss is fantastic fan service.

Going to be replaying this for years, for £15.

I'd be hard pressed to agree that they are best platformers.... compared to Mario games (1,2,3 and World, and Yoshis Island) ... hell most of the Sonic levels you barely need to do any platforming on (exaggerating) they certainly are unique takes on platforming... and a very good setting (Especially 3 ..)... but best platformer? nah? simply far more variety and creativity in the Mario games (beyond the S*it bosses :( )

@MBirdy88: I'm not interested in sonic vs mario right now. It's a sacred cow vs a sacred cow and a totally useless argument.

I said One of the best series. Play Sonic Mania and tell me I am wrong.

Mario 1/2 didn't have much in the way of variety. In fact Mario 2 (the real Mario 2) was essentially a more difficult Mario, content wise it added practically nothing and was far less progressive than Sonic 2, or even it's 8 bit incarnations. The other game ( Doki Doki) was different because it wasn't Mario to begin with. So yea, while you can argue Mario was a better designed game the only one with any real extended variety was 3.

Segas Alex The Kidd (1986) was arguably ahead of both. Instead of specific vehicle levels or vehicles controlled by AI, it was an optional purchase with multi-layered air/ground/sea paths Multiple power-ups, traps as well as puzzle solving.

Woot! My collector's edition is here! I can't believe how huge the box is, because it really is like the size of the original Genesis one I got way back when.

Can somebody please post a video of someone playing this game WELL? I just watched a video of some idiot over at IGN play it for seven minutes, and watching someone play a Sonic 2D platformer that badly just hurts my soul.

As a massive Sega fanboy, it's great to see Sonic getting some love. I will purchase this and no doubt enjoy it.

Remember people Sega does what Nintendon't :)

True, Nintendo didn't drop out of the console industry. :P

Jokes aside, I decided to give Sonic Mania a try and bought it on the Switch. Liked some of the new stuff they added to Chemical Plant Zone, and wasn;t expecting the boss fight in that zone. Studiopolis Zone is just a delight.

Got all the chaos emeralds (Super Sonic's theme is bitchin'). I'll do the real final boss fight in a bit, and then I might start a Knuckles' playthrough.

In Studiopolis Act 2, you can uncover the "Genesis Does" slogan behind some of the wheel of fortune letters. ;)

Can't believe I was able to bag a CE for the Switch at Fry's while shopping for a vacuum cleaner with one of my girlfriends! STUPID luck!

I very much like having this game on the run if need be =) So much fun!

He self owned himself but is just too petty to admit it, which is unfortunate.

But it didn't get a 10, so not really.

I really like playing the Time Attack mode. Repeating the levels and finding the best route through them to shave off a few seconds at a time is a rewarding experience.

I went through the Sonic & Tails campaign a second time, beat the real final boss, and I believe I've unlocked everything (Got 24 gold medals and have 8 silver ones left to convert). So far the Knuckles' story is also proving to be just like how it was in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, because right away I'm noticing some variation in the level design.

So yeah, if you can't tell, I'm loving this game, because Mania is basically Streets of Rage Remake all over again for me, lol.

Highly unlikely GS would give 10 to a retro game. But 9 is within reach.
