Can Sonic Mania get a 10?

I played a ton of 1 and 2, but never really got into 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. I don't think any of those games would really hold up today the way that classic Mario can. I loved them when they were new, though. It's pretty challenging to get all of the chaos emeralds.

No 2D platformer can get a 10 these days. The best you can expect is an 8, but realistically it will get a 7.

Yes we know that those digital exclusives weren't brought up which is a head scratcher because why wouldn't they count as exclusives, exclusives is the premise and OP. But ultimately you were the only one that brought up the estimate of 30+ Switch only digital only games including Switch only NeoGeo games within the thread to continue the boast about Switch exclusives. When you brought up estimates especially a whopping 30+ Switch only digital only games, of course it will get attention and will be part of the discussion.

When you said Switch had Switch only NeoGeo games, it caught my attention as well and still has my attention because I'm actually interested in getting some. By the look of it most of them are really cheap but I just want those Switch only NeoGeo games. So could you provide what are those Switch only NeoGeo games are, so I may get them on the meantime to feed the nostalgia and wait until Sonia Mania gets cheaper later on. So what are they? Is that wrong as well?

@PurpleMan5000: They hold up just as well today as they did back in the 16 bit era, Sonic Mania scoring so well is a clear sign of that. 3d sonics have been of much lower quality, but the classic sonics (1-3, Knuckles, and CD) are and always have been great games, time hasn't changed that one bit.

The Game Gear/Master Versions are also good. Although titled Sonic 1/2 they are completely different games.

Well, colour me surprised. I didn't think a 2D platformer could have a serious shot at a 9.

Good on Sega. Maybe if this sell well, they'll finally use this to figure out how to consistently make good Sonic games.

Oooooh, I guess games like LittelBigPlanet, Braid, Rayman Legends, Super Mario Maker, Puppeteer or Super Meat Boy never counted.

@uninspiredcup: I never played the master system/gg versions of sonic, but the master system was a hell of a system so I can see Sonic being damn good on it.

They are not ports of the Mega Drive 1/2 but original titles (for some reason) titled the same. Most people have completely forgotten about them or assume they are downgraded Genesis ports.

@uninspiredcup: Oh crap my bad, I thought you were talking about the Genesis games at that point. Yeah I recently watched the Gaming Historians video on the game gear sonics and a few of them looked really good.

Kinda prefer Sonic 1 on them over the Genesis version. If anything it was a great demonstration of what the Master System/GG could do, Scrap Brain/Sky Zone in particularly had some pretty nice visuals. Some sacrifices like enemies drawn on screens and actually losing your rings, but by and large you got a solid Sonic experience.

@uninspiredcup: You should be excited then. I'm 2 hours in and there are definitely Game Gear/Master System references. Mania is without a doubt for hardcore Sonic fans, holy shit.

I'm surprised GS gave it a 9, but I'm sure it's well worth it. I hope Sega learns from it, it's rather sad that some ROM hacker knows better what the fans want than the enitre Sonic Team :S

I've played it for a while on my Switch (Since PC was delayed), and it's the greatest Sonic game I've played since Sonic Adventure 2 on Dreamcast.

Can somebody please post a video of someone playing this game WELL? I just watched a video of some idiot over at IGN play it for seven minutes, and watching someone play a Sonic 2D platformer that badly just hurts my soul.

This game is awesome, a 9 or 10 from me, probably the best Sonic ever. I played as Knuckles and the boss in 2-2 was awesome . It's pretty much a Puyo Puyo fight, inspired by Dr. Robotnics Mean Bean machine.

Home button glitch on the Switch. Other than that it's Godly.

Even I'm a bit rusty. Haven't touched a sonic game in quite some time. Except those sonic 3 bonus stages, I still rock those like a damn pro.

I think ill set the Steam controller aside and plug in my Logitech controller for this. The D-Pad is exactly like on the Megadrive controller.

But there's rusty, and there's stopping to jump up and down in one spot for half a minute, inexplicably walking backwards to spin-dash on flat ground, and taking about five seconds to spin-dash in such a way that suggests the person is running the series of button presses in their head, one button at a time. I think most game "journalists" aren't gamers anymore. They are just people looking to shackle their beliefs and points of view onto the gaming landscape.

For those that have played it, what's been your biggest surprise? Mine is either when the fake Fang showed up and shot down the Tornado or when you used the Sonic 3 Hydrocity Act 2 eggmobile against Robotnik in Act 1.

I also think this has to be my favorite track of the game. Tee Lopes knocked the music out of the park for Mania.
