Ironically, severe long term agricultural shortfalls are probably one of the most likely internal threats to U.S. stability and power. However, these same conditions would destroy almost all of the other countries in the world much more quickly.

Doubtful. The canadians are somewhat barbaric, but i wouldnt liken them to the visigoths or vandals. But honestly, other than the USSR, when's the last time a first world country really fell apart?

Yes it will. Generations from now, there may be shows on TV (or equivalent) about the fall of The United State of America, and the historians on the show may be talkin' 'bout socialism and Obama as the root cause of the fall.

The argument that living in a country ruled by a government is a privilege makes the assumption that the government has an absolute right to all land/property in the country. Please explain why it is a privilege for someone to live on property he bought, in a house that he built.
And now you're ignoring the part where I said government shouldn't own things because the only money government is capable of acquiring (which is necessary for the maintenance of infrastructure) is via taxation. So you'd be okay with it if they just put a toll boot on every highway instead of taking whatever percentage of income tax that covers that aspect of government spending? Toll booths certainly would be preferable to funding via income tax, because then the people who actually use roads would be the ones funding it. Of course there are more efficient/convenient ways to charge someone for using a road than making them stop at a toll booth.[QUOTE="Laihendi"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] Which is the government.:|Yusuke420

I want it to be privately owned. That is why I said that state ownership of infrastructure is inherently flawed. That cripples it. If I own land....I'm not building a damn road for you to use. And if I did...you'd pay a lot to use it.

[QUOTE="curono"]Unless there is a barbarian horde, a division of the empire and a creation of new states... I don't see that happening. However I do see a diminishing military and economic power.LJS9502_basicEh military....no. Economics tend to rise and fall. Look. US government intertwines military and economic power. It is hard and terrible to say, but it is true. The sole reason to make almost ANY war is to get some kind of profit. US Independence? We want to make trading decisions! Mexican independence? We want to take the big positions in the government and in "companies". Holy wars? We want to take over a huge territory and gain trade benefits. Panamenian invasion? We want to control the Panama canal. See? If the US loses economic power, their military power must diminish (no money to pay wars and war resources). If economy and economic power decreases, also does military power lower. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Yes, but under this idea people would also be able to charge at each interval which could be every 4 or 5 miles. Also without government regulation, people would charge whatever they wanted and it would quickly become very expensive just to commute to work every morning. You work have to work out rate with every single land owner in every part of the roads that want to be build. What about road trips? There's miles of desert with no one having any property rights over the land because it is untenable, so how do you bridge those gaps?Yusuke420The government is already charging whatever it wants for roads, so your worst case scenario already exists. Whether it's the government or a private individual/organization building a road, they're still going to have to negotiate with land owners in the area where they want to build a road. And if there are miles of desert that is unclaimed property, then there is no one to object to someone building a road there, so that isn't a problem either.
ITT: things are broken and we need to fix them, just dont change anything.
sounds just like politics, nothing will change and so everything will be forced to.
