Looks okay

Doesn't show much, but it definitely looks like the series is going to benefit from having a director who is actually GOOD for a change.

Yeah...but it is a shame we have to wait until Episode 8 for him though.

Wait they announced a director for the second of the new movies?

Yep, Rian Johnson (Looper).

Hmmmm Looper was solid. Not sure that director is as good as JJ though...
Wait that was fake right? I really fucking hope so as if this is real I no longer care for the star wars series of movies. Like why the **** was a drone riding and rolling a soccer ball? And the clone is fucking black? Just **** off JJ abrams way to ruin both major sci fi series.
I jumped when the stormtrooper popped out of nowhere. And then....ball droid and a girl flying on a box? Ok.
X-wing and Falcon shots looked cool though.
Part of me wants to pick it apart, the other part of me is screaming like a little school girl.

Lucas already ruined it. JJ Abrams is trying to bring it back.
It's 2014, while JJ said the CGI would be toned down from 1/3; with real sets, it doesn't mean modernized technology will not be used.
I'd be more concerned by stupid shit like the Star Trek series has had. Like Spock attempting to punch a man to death and getting more upset about Kirk than his home planet being blown up with a shitty pop culture line cringly delivered.
Johnson is a much better director than Abrams.
Still can't muster up even a hint of interest for this thing.
So in essence, the visuals are strong and slick [Abrams' forte], the writing (what little we got, just two lines so I won't be making much out of it) is treading water.
But I won't deny that I was excited throughout the teaser.
Jar Jar Abrams gets a $1 chip for this teaser. Don't spend it all in one place.
Voice over was overdone but I liked the scenes.
Looks like the film is going to be a bit more physical as well rather than everything being CGI, which is nice.
It's not a triple lightsaber, it's just blowout from the main beam presumably because the main beam is so hardcore.

Still ridiculous. The only thing I'm really having a problem with from the teaser after re-watching it a couple times is the lightsaber. The "flame" thing they are going for is, fine, I guess, but the "hilt" blades, or whatever they might be is just way too over the top even for Star Wars.
They make no sense. No blade weapon in the history of humanity, from what I can recall, has ever had blades of any sort in those positions. Certainly they've had blade "grabbers" (like a sai) but never an edged blade proper running perpendicular to the main blade. But I could be wrong.
But hey, they might have a decent enough explanation for it.

I know it looks absurdly dangerous and impractical to use.

Considering how many of them keep getting their hands amputated at the wrist, I'm thinking it's intended to be some sort of guard, like actual swords have.

Ding, ding, ding.
That's the theory running around.
I don't know much about sword fighting, so meh.
[Copy/Paste what I said on the article news]
Abrams has always had his own cinematic vision with his films, but I've always felt it was a rather cheap and soulless one. Way too many cramped close-ups, way too much close-range panning, way too many overemphasized zooms, way too many below-screen reveals and over complicated trick shots. What then is there to differentiate his films from any other commercialized summer blockbuster? It doesn't feel grand, it doesn't feel epic. Just a conventional commercialized presentation with cheesy camerawork.
The SW films have always had their unique cinematic presentation, filled primarily with wide and landscape shots which made the characters feel as if they had a proper stage to act on. The camera work was typically well-utilized but subdued, allowing the focus to remain on the characters and the world, and to allow those to carry the weight without an obnoxiously manipulative frame. It felt classy. It felt like a proper film epic.
With the cinematography I've seen so far from this teaser/trailer, I feel as if this could easily be just any other summer blockbuster throughout the past decade, merely replaced with SW marketing compared to any other XYZ brand Hollywood has been shilling out for. There's nothing classically filmic or special about it, and this is probably the one thing that I was most worried about when the franchise was placed in Abram's hands. Something doesn't sit right with me if I can watch a SW film, and then a Marvel release the week after, and feel like the cinematic presentation was on par between the two.

I still think it looks silly but there's not many ways of stopping a lightsaber I guess...maybe a built-in force-field generator that would wrap about the hands? But then it would look like a dick and a ball from the side...not very awe-inspiring...

Then the body of the hilt must be made out of cortosis or blade contact at that point where the blades leave a gap will cut right through the hilt. [/nerd rant]
If Jedi/Sith wanted to use a real sword, they'd use a vibroblade.
Also, this has me busting a gut:

I was thinking that too, but I guess it's still easier to angle the lightsaber so that the side "blades" stop the attacking lightsaber (even with the annoyiance of making sure it doesn't hit the hilt) than actually getting your wrists all the way out of dodge =P
So this was on /tv/:
So, insider info I got in a press kit:
-The new Lightsaber is called the Cross Saber.
-The side sabers are outlets for excess energy since the wielder can't control it well.
-The Storm Trooper in the beginning is the main character.
-The female lead is a junker who deals metal and scrap alongside Jawas.
-The X-Wing fighter is seeking revenge and is a secondary antagonist because of the danger he puts people through.
-The droid is called B-T-1. It's a mobile transmitter droid. The ball can open, and its head can hide inside.
-The person with the red lightsaber isn't a sith, but an assassin obsessed with the jedi. He can't use the force, which drives his obsession.
-Tatooine is the setting for the first 70 minutes of the film.
Take with salt.

Well that's boring. I thought we've all seen enough of that planet.

What's the point of a lightsaber if he can't deflect blaster shots with superhuman ability?

The lightsaber is the defining image of a Jedi. If his obsession drives him to be one, he needs a lightsaber.
Honestly, aside from the design, if this info is true, the idea of a non-Force using "Jedi" being the villain is clever (and there is rumours circulating that he has been possessed by the mask of an old Sith lord).

He won't be able to fight for shit though, one stormtrooper with a blaster could probably take him out.
On the other hand, stormtroopers can't aim for shit so in the end its fair.

Sounds like bathroom stall fanfic O_o
@foxhound_fox: If that info is true this movie could be really interesting. In general I think they really need to do something different with the story (which if the info is true then they are accomplishing that) for this new movie to be worth a damn.
This is the 7th entrance in a tired franchise. Things need to change or it will be nothing more than beating a dead horse.
I liked the trailer. Could have been terrible but it looked pretty interesting. I like the Sith looking dude and the X-Wings and shot from inside the storm trooper carrier looked cool. To be honest though, I'm not really sure why some people are so beside themselves with hype for this movie though. Lets be real here, the Star Wars franchise (minus nostalgia) is not fantastic. Episode 4 is cheesy as ****, episode 6 had the Ewoks, and we all know what happened with the prequel trilogy (though I did not mind episode 3). The only truly great film in the series was The Empire Strikes Back. I'm excited to see this because it looks like a good sci fi movie, but I never really got the whole obsession with Star Wars (maybe because I'm only in my mid twenties and wasn't around for the originals).

You do know that not all Stormtroopers are clones, right? And that droid wasn't on a soccer ball. It was his mode of transportation, more efficient than wheels. But, raging nerds are gonna rage... *shrugs*

Star Wars has always featured weird and a iconic looking droids. I don't see anything wrong with the rolling droid. Most Stormtroopers weren't clones.
So you really don't seem to have any idea over what it is you're actually complaining about.
