I hate being smoked when I walk orstand on sidewalks, so do you agree smoking should be banned in the public ?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Ummm no its legal to smoke. And unless you are surrounded by smokers or they are blowing smoke straight into your face on purpose they are not killing you at all. Geez.
I don't think it should be banned in public.
Also, if it is going to be illegal to smoke in your car or home with people under 18, then it should also be illegal to feed people under 18 fast food. Both should either be allowed, or both illegal.
I would totally support this but unfortunately the fact that its "public" land is what makes it difficult to implement a complete ban. What constitutes public land vs. private? If i'm in front of my house on my driveway is that public or private area? Theres a lot of logistics involved and "public" is a pretty grey area.
Now a simpler thing to implement would be to ban smoking in all government owned areas like, city parks and rec centers.
Right now where I am smoking has been hit pretty hard. People are not allowed to smoke in bars, in casinos; cigarettes can't be sold in businesses that sell groceries or pharmaceuticals. I rarely run into smokers now except out in front of clubs or restaurants and I don't stick around to breathe in the secondhand smoke.
Depending on the what includes "public" I think someone should be able to go out and smoke outside of a bar. However, if someone wants to light up at the beach or a park I could see banning it there(not only because of second-hand smoke but, because of the litter generally associated with smoking)Mafiree
I cant see the difference between a pavement or a park to be honest. A lot of non smokers may want to hang outside a bar so that kinda falls flat.
I HATE SMOKEi live in Ohio and few years ago they ban smoking in buildings. and man what a change. Then last oct i went to Florida turn second flight in Atlanta and man the airports stink, the restaurants stinked. it was pretty bad on that subject. i was glad to be back in Ohio, first thing we did after landing went to ihops it was about 3 am. i just laughed how much better it smelt
now i have few friends that smoke. they know i dont like it so they smoke less when im around them but anyways 2 smoke American spirit other smoke other types and wow American spirit really don't stink. it's also 100% tobacco and no chemicals
On one hand, I wouldn't particularly have a problem with it, but on the other hand, I question whether it's even necessary. The number of people smoking and the amount they smoke has never been lower at any time in polled history than it is now. I can't remember the last time I saw someone smoking, to be honest.
All throughout my day I see people lighting up. Just depends where you live I guess. On one hand, I wouldn't particularly have a problem with it, but on the other hand, I question whether it's even necessary. I'm quite embarrassed at the level of intolerance of smokers.

Agreed...
People, get over yourselves... the world does not revolve around you and your needs and wants...

The person who owns the business should be able to decide thatI don't smoke, but I find the way smokers are being ostracized to be so over the top its ridiculous. People act like someone smoking outside 15ft away from them is somehow going to give them instant cancer. PerfectCircles
There are too many times they smoked near me. About several weeks ago, Iwas standing in front tof an In N Out, 2 whitegirls came out of nowhere and standing very close to me (about 3 yards away) and started smoking. I was angry and had to goaway toavoid being smoked.
i swear people complain about everything i dont understand how someone can be that bothered by smoke when your outside. i understand why its banned inside almost everywhere but banning it in public is ridiculous i remember one time i was smoking on my steps in front of my house and some lady was walking by on the sidewalk she did a fake cough and then gave me a dirty look, its like are you serious lmao some people just amaze mespliffstar12
When you smoked that cigarette, you gave 6 mexican babies aids.
Cigarettes and all tobacco in general should be banned. Period.wiifan001
I hope this is a joke. Ever heard of prohibition? And I would be much more concerned with the pollution pumped out from cars and power plants if I were in the city, thank god I live away from all that mess. But it is the smoker's right to smoke, a wiff of second hand smoke will not kill you, like I said, you are harmed way more by pollution. And if you think it should be banned becasue it smells bad, then you are obviously very self centered. Should people be banned from getting plastic surgery because it looks bad? Should people be banned from eating garlic because then their breath smells bad? hear yourselves tralking.
Feeding people fast food doesn't give them lung, throat, lip, and et cetera cancer, it can give them cancer, but only if they're constantly eating it, if you smoke and if someone else inhales the smoke, if it keeps going on and on the smoke will eventually turn your lungs into a massive lump of black jelly, and you might have to carry oxygen with you just to stay alive.I don't think it should be banned in public.

It is true that it is common courtesy to get away from people when you smoke, and that those girls were rude. But that does not mean that you should take away the rights of other smokers who are more courteous. btw why did you find the need to add in the observation that the girls were white :P

Right, so for fast food, you have to eat it "constantly" which means repeatedly. But if the smoke "keeps going" it will "eventually" cause a problem. Explain the difference.
What really gets me isn't smoking itself, which is being shoved aside. There are two elements of smoking that really get me. The first is littering. Smoke and that's fine, but every spring the snow melts and the ground is just covered in cigarette butts. I have no interest in being surrounded by trash.
The other is that smokers always take more breaks than non-smokers at work. They aren't penalized for taking a good 10-20 minutes more time away from their desk every single day. This has been true at every place I've ever worked at, and it's baffling.
Beyond that, I think most public smoking laws are sufficient. Keep it out of indoor locations, and not in front of doors where people have to go to enter or leave a building.

See, these two gripes seem reasonable.

Heart Disease is the leading cause of deaths in America if I'm not mistaken...a lot of cases being caused by eating. Fatty foods do cause health problems.
