I would say no because the students already wear the same uniforms, Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle. And the good part about those uniforms is that the tax payers don't pay for it, the students and their parents do.

well my school requires it...(im English). One of the arguements against it is that uniforms can be quite expensive I mean my blazer costs £50 add another £50 for the shoes which only last me 6 months and then theres all teh shirts and trousers etc etc it can get quite costly... this isnt a problem for my family but some families can find this an unnecessary burden.

Maybe. I wouldn't enjoy it but it would be nice not seeing emo styles in the hall every day.

I'm with the user above...and honestly, it's not that bad. Though my brother had an uncanny habit of destroying his sweater or loosing his tie all the time so he was the only one who had to pay a lot for replacements. My blazer lasted 3 years...

For private schools, it should be left up to the school. For public schools, no. As it is already mandatory for students to attend the school, making a uniform also mandatory further belittles the freedom of the students.

I'd rather prefer wearing something I'd know I like than something as dull as a uniform. I say no.

Collared shirts like the ones that button down the entire way? Or the polo shirts or whatever with just the 3 buttons at the top of the shirt?

I think so. Then people won't be made fun of because they were different clothes. Then they'll be made fun of just because they're different.

Yes, I've seen studies that show that students that wear uniforms get better grades. That by itself seems like more than enough reason, but it also keeps the poor kids from being picked on because they cannot afford those $100 articals of clothing the rich kids can, creating a better learning environment.

I don't think they should. I don't think it's good for their mental health either, but that's just a theory.

Perhaps a much stricter dress code. Though uniforms aren't such a bad idea, good for getting young people adjusted to the uniforms they'll likely have to wear at work anyway.

no thats one of the perks of being in public school. And I never would wear a uniform even if it was strictly enforced.

As another English person, uniforms feel completely normal to me. I found it really weird when I got to college, and was allowed to wear what I wanted - I actually found it irritating having to decide what to wear every day =/ I don't like having to think in the mornings.

But then, my school uniform wasn't that bad. Except we had to wear these heavy black blazers, and had to ask for permission to take them off =/ And I remember, the teacher said we couldn't take them off, because she said it wasn't that hot. But she was wearing a light summer dress, and we were wearing heavy blackblazers.... That was irritating. But mainly, uniforms weren't too bad.

I dont really mind my uniform.... but I always make a scene and go off on one if a teacher in casual dress doesnt let us take our blazers off when its hot....

Uniforms aren't that bad. Since I'm not a morning person at all, it takes having to decide what to wear out of the equation, plus our uniforms are pretty casual. Just a navy polo shirt with our logo embroidered on it and khaki pants.

Uniform is agreat way to teach a person dignity & pride. But the lack of punishment won't make it effective. Humiliation and physical abuse are the best way to mold a person into disciplined individual. Act like a scumbag I will treat you like a scumbag. If you help me I will help you. If you respect me you will earn my respect. UNIFORM and in SINGLE FORM, THE SAME, NO STUDENT IS SPECIAL. NO IDENTITY.

It's hard to discipline people when you are notpermitted to embarrass nor hit them. So that's why I think the uniform thing is not in public school. It's impossible to regiment people without the promise of physical or emotional injury.

Honestly, myschool's dress code is so strict, it doesn't matter if we wear uniforms or not. I really wouldn't care if we had uniforms at my school or not. It would make everything fair and the ones who are "favored" by the school wouldn't be going around in mini skirts like they own the damn school. The school never does a damn thing when they see one of the "favorite" ones doing it. Honestly, I wouldn't care.

Many public schools do require uniforms. My school enacted that policy (fortunately two years after I graduated) to some initial controversy. But after a few months, everyone chilled out and it was fine.

The students' families had to buy their own uniforms, too, so no additional burden on the taxpayers.

Same here. I had to wear uniform from pre-school to 8th grade.
