Ive had my Slimline PS2 for over 3 months now and have had No major problems other than it not wanting to load a Flatout Demo.

My Slimline is the slightly newer release version and does get slightly warm but Ive had no DREs or any of the problems that I had with my previous PS2's.

I think Sony has worked out the bugs that the first release slimlines had and are now the more reliable version of any of the PS2's

also the slimline PS2's DO HAVE A SMALL FAN located over the central processors on the right hand side of the console INSIDE of the casing.

Also I had a version 5000 PS2 that was only a year old and yes the last batch of the "fatty" PS2s did have all the features that the slimline had such as reading cdRW and the built in IR sensor but my last "fatty" PS2 started having problems playing DVDs after ONE year so Im not convinced that they are the best version to have.

The current Slimlines are the most reliable IMAO.

As long as you keep your console in a location where it has at least decent ventilation and a working fan theirs (especially on the newer models) and keep them clean It will prolong a systems life greatly.

Heck I still have My original Dreamcast that is loud and does get hot after long hours of gameplay but still works great just take care of your respective systems and they will last a LOT longer.

Where have u ppl been, wake up and check the stores every now n then. They released a new Multitap that only works for the PSTwo (Slim design). Neways the new MultiTap is much smaller than the Standard Multitap for PS2. itz bout 1/4 in size.

I'm pretty happy with my old school ps2 test system. Although the slimline would make a nice little collectible.... so would a PSX.

PSTwo .vs. PS2

If you want to find out the advantages of Sony Playstation's new slimline console, then read below:

~ PROS ~
1. Integrated Network Adapter (Online Play).

2. Upgraded DVD Support (DVD-R/RW ~ DVD+R/RW support) - (Upgraded DVD Software).

3. Slim Design (Console is more durable and fits in most small places) - (It will be easier to move your console around the house or take it to a friends house)

4. Flip Top Design (The console works like the PS1, so you have to insert PS2 Games/DVD's in the top of the console).

~ CONS ~
1. No HDD Support (There is no place to attach a harddrive to the console) - (Sony has substituted that for the slim design).

2. Flip Top Design (You cannot store the console in small vertical places due to this design) - (When console is opened it averages to 4.5in height)

- END -
sierrad
The slim-line also plays games/DVDs quieter than the old one; BUT ONE MAJOR CON is that you should not play for more than 4 hours under risk of overheating!!!-which means NO ALL NIGHT GAMING!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Put the PS2 in a well-ventilated area and perhaps point a fan at it for marathon sessions.

I think the older PS2 looks much better than the slimline. And usually when companies come out with a replacement system its not as good as the original. I thought the PSone was built flimsier than the original PSX, and I had a small genesis that sucked compared to the original. I actually made the decision to buy a new PS2 over the PSTWO today. I was suprised the store still had about a pallet of the older PS2's.

I must quote you on that as me and my friends have played with the console on for 12+ hours. All I noticed was a slight lag here and there, but by giving the console a 15min rest, everything was working great 8)

I have been thinking about getting the slim line PS2 because for one i dont play almost all day but its really off and on like 2 hours thin i work on some projects and a few other things after I hop back on so playing for more thin 4 hours would not bother me. Also I was thinking about a slim line based on the fact that i have a small amount of space in my room and i like every thing to be slick and compact. thin lastly I like to mod my consoles and other little things in my house and i know a way i can use the games on my HD to play on the slim line so when i can i will be getting one.

The system burns up to quick, get hot and it could easily break. Because it gets hot to fast, it will burn up the harddrive inside, not that it really has one.

i bought a slimline last october 23rd.  in the first week of december i was sending it back to Sony to be replaced.  it stopped reading the discs.  Sony was super fast about replacing it.  this year on october 8th, the replacement stopped reading discs, so now i am waiting for Sony to replace that one.  i can't wait to get it back.  i've never had any overheating issues, even after playing it for around 12 hours straight.  i do have the vertical stand and that might help keep it a few degrees cooler, since more surface area is exposed to the air.  my ps2's (SCPH70012) just stopped reading the discs without any warning.  maybe Sony knew there would be lots of problems and that's why Sony gives the slimline a 1 year warranty versus 90 days with the older ps2.  or maybe Sony is just learning more about customer care and service.

Hey, yeah the only advantage from my perspective is moving it around.

But the disadvantages are as one one you said supporting the HDD but also there hasn't been room for the cooling fan so the machine can heat up more easily.

But i'm not sure if you can install one onto it, you can get one imported from Hong Kong via Ebay. A mate of mine said that you can install one on the slimline but I'm not sure if that's true or not.

If anyone has an answer and is 100% sure or close about it please email me on basscorp999@hotmail.com .

You people are better off buying a normal PS2. The Slimline has no fan so games only last for 3 hours. Then it turns it self off. :( How poor..

I for one happen to own a PlayStation 2 Slimline edition. Its not bad, and your quite wrong about the cooling fan, because i can play my games for a lot more than three hours and my ps2 doesnt overheat. Unless you do the stupid thing and block the exit for the fan than yeah, they dont last long. The built in online adapter mades online gaming a snap, and thats why two of my four ps2 games are online. Im about to get another online game very soon. In My Opinion, its what you need the slimline for that counts, not if its better than the original. Im also a fan of small consoles, like the gamecube.

Even though I'm not a Fata$$ or a skinny b@$t@rd , I'd still go with the original. and don't call it a FATTY! besides, i doesn't overheat!a con for the slimline. I own the big one and the new one and i really think the original is better. but the slimline took out the fan and doesn't support the hdd. besides who needs the HDD? A con for both of the ps2's is because people still mod it! yes for the original!_!:D

I purchased my original PS2 the day it launched (Oct. 26, 2000) and it died on me later in 2003. Then I purchased a slim PStwo (model SCPH-75001) on October 24, 2005 and it is way better than the old bulky model. In real life it looks so freaking small (about the size of a DVD case) and sexy. I played MGS2 for ~15 hours straight and the system didn't melt or overheat. And having the network adapter integrated is a big plus.

The bottom line is that the people that have the old bulky model will say that the slim one sucks out of jealousy and envy. But once you get a slim PStwo you will never want to go back to the old bulky model. I have had both and I can confirm it... the slim PStwo is "orders of magnitude" better than the old bulky PS2. Period.

You are talking out of your ass (no flaming intended). I played MGS2 on my slim PStwo for 15 hours straight with absolutely no overheating problems at all. And the system does have a fan. It is a very little fan, but if you put your hand on the left side of the console you can feel the wind coming out from inside the machine.

I went through 2 of the old style PS2 (they both just quit reading disks) - and I take excellent care of my electronics. Regardless of of the PS3 release date; my slime line better not crap out on me... so far so good though.

Because I want to clear it up, for all practical purposes the slimline does not have overheating issues. Here's the difference for you geniuses: The slim PS2 is a smaller machine, thus the casing is in closer quarters to the processors that are generating heat, so to the touch the slimline feels warmer in less time. I'm sure some idiot though his slim PS2 was getting hot too fast so he ran to teh internets to let everyone know that it was overheating, and now we have this stupid rumor that it overheats in like an hour.

The thing is, since processor cooling does rely partly on air flow, the slimline probably does suffer minimally. However, realistically this is not a problem. After many hours of playing, the machine is going to get about as hot as it's going to get, so for it to have much of an adverse effect, it's going to take a ridiculously long time. Anyway if you leave any console running for days at a time you're an idiot; so don't be an idiot and all is well.

Does anyone know if there are price drop plans for the slimline when the 360 comes out? I've been following news stories as much as possible on here to see if there's been any articles on it, but I haven't found any.

I was hoping it would drop to $129 or maybe $99 even. I'm too nervous to buy the old fat one off ebay or gamestop and have it crap out on me. I want the slimline, but I'm hoping they drop the price when 360 launches.

Anyone know? Thanks :D

no hdd?:| does anyone even have a hdd? if sony only launched it properly.... well anyhow... another pro of the slimline is that its uber sexy 8) †fonzie313
Yes, the PS2 Slimline is Uber "SEXY", It is also well woth the money.  It takes up less space, has an IR port, which I love, and it is a great object of attention at LAN parties, since I don't have to worry about an idiot stealing my network adapter. mwahaha, um sorry 'bout that.  I just love it so much.

But you play a game that has the black dick bottom then you here that loud fans noise.NeonBlade
Black /what/ bottom? Anyway... The slim PS2 will not overheat, will not blow up, will not shoot lasers, and will not attack you with a chainsaw in the middle of the night. If the system had an overheating problem, or if it blew up after long hours of play, then that would put the owners of the system at risk. Overheating could cause a fire, and then Sony would get sued. If there was really a problem /that/ dangerous, Sony would have started a recall. One problem I have heard is that USB flash drives do not work on the PSTwo. I have tried both the Sandisk Mini and Micro, and neither of them work. There is a thread in a forum for the CodeBreaker cheat device about this, and one person has bought several different Flash drives. None of them worked.
