@domiddian: Look I'm tired of PC players feeling like everybody wants to be gaming on PC. There are people who prefer console for varied reasons. You can sit here and beat you chest till you bleed about I can build one for cheaper but the truth is not everyone wants to spend time scouring the internet for deals and then have to mail in rebates etc... PC world has done this breakdown on the cost of building a PC with Xbox specs and the cheapest version was $693 and that is with assembly required which not everyone would do correctly i mean we have entire help desks that remind people to turn stuff off, unplug it, and then plug it back in which solves their issue. I have a friend who works in IT and the stories he tells are hilarious. So people just want something they can buy that works with minimal effort and a PC is not that item.

@moviespot: With 4th and 5th gen consoles - you could make a chip that would be able do entire functions of that console and produce one for fractions of its original costs.

But now consoles do so much more - blu ray, internet, games, apps, on and on

The 3rd party licenses alone and keeping track of them is huge and costly. Drives, storage, i/o, etc etc that cannot be replaced with a jump in technology alone.

Believe me moviespot, with the gaming industry being a razor and blade business model - if they could make a console for and sale it for 20$ - they would. Because even now the 8th gen consoles are sold at a loss including the nintendo, why because they make their money back by selling software- of which it is still around 20-30% of any game sold. Give or take first party, exclusivity, etc., etc.

The ps2, xbox, ps3, xbox 360 all had to the metal architecture that could not be recreated on newer generations - for instance the cell processor of the ps3 - some games would be too expensive to port over because of how they were coded. And emulators are used to bring backward compatible games today. But now whats different is the pc architecure the 8th gen consoles have taken up, this is very much like pc in that you can downgrade or upscale graphics with little porting. When 9th gen comes out - games will say it needs a blank console architecture or higher to run on, or the game will support this range of console versions ... etc.

@moviespot: the reason why they have backwards compatability is to keep the people who already have there console from switching to another console,lots of people spend alot of money building a games collection so when they are picking a console to upgrade too they will pick the console the games they already own work on
