The PS5 Is A Big Console For A Good Reason

According to some recent details, the size is due to an increased need for cooling, among possible other reasons.

When it was revealed last month, many people were surprised by the striking design of the PS5, which abandons the black box design of recent console generations for bold curves and a striking black-and-white color scheme. While it didn't take long for players to start making memes about the appearance of the console, others have noted its increased size over its predecessors, the PS4 and even the original "fat" PS3. That giant size is, according to one Sony employee, because the console generates an enormous amount of heat. With that much power comes a need to keep the system cool, and a huge case was necessary.

When one commenter asked on LinkedIn why the console is so bulky--as spotted by VG247--PlayStation's vice president of UX design Matt MacLaurin replied: "Thermals. This gen is little supercomputers. While the 7nm process delivers amazing heat performance for the power, the power is very extreme."

Now Playing: First Look at PS5 Console | Sony PS5 Reveal Event

However, there might be other reasons for the large size. A leaked patent seems to suggest that Sony is building a cartridge that might work with the PS5. Some observers have speculated that it's an external solid-state drive that will slot into the console for memory management, but there's no official word if that's the case. We still don't know how much the PS5 will cost, or the PS5's full line-up of games, but odds are likely that more details will come out over the coming weeks. Most of its announced first-party games are also not going to be ready for launch. However, it should receive plenty of third-party support out of the gate. This includes sports games like Madden and NBA 2K, and presumably the Call of Duty series. Some of these will be cross-generational releases, and certain publishers are also allowing players to upgrade for free when the newer version becomes available.

The Xbox Series X is also a huge console, but it sports a PC-like form factor that is more familiar to players. The console, like the PS5, can be placed horizontally or vertically. It doesn't look like it will require a stand to do so, however.

That doesn't ezplain the "wings" and why anyone in their right minds would choose white plastic.

@Pyrosa: I prefer White personally, I have the White PS4 Pro version, I think it was only available at Gamestop for a while. The curvature definitely has some intention for heat dissipation in the design, if it will make any difference, not too likely. I don’t hate it though, Sony took a design risk at least, XBOX is as simple as it gets and my niece could design it, but that has its appeal too.

I’m excited for this gen on both fronts, I’ll be buying the PS5 and just hope XBOX steps it up again, close competition is better for the consumers. Having a gaming PC, Microsoft Studios making some great IPs would only make everything that much better for me. I’m also not holding my breath.

@Pyrosa: The wings (somewhat) hide the large exhaust vents and also direct the airflow.

Lol, they're out there justifying it by calling the PS5 a supercomputer. They do this every new generation of consoles! It's probably the least true these years than ever before because consumer PCs are very good now. I'm sorry, but a $500-600 console is not going to be a supercomputer compared to a $2000+ consumer desktop. The only thing Sony has going for them is their SSD.

@saturatedbutter: Agreed. These console manufacturers really resort to some asinine rhetoric when pushing their products and it's always hilarious to see people parroting the "jargon" used, like it means anything at all.

Consoles always have an expiration date and never offer the optimal experience from a performance/customization standpoint. They're inherently a compromise.

In a perfect world where everyone had the freedom and money to choose their platform consoles would no longer have a place. This has never been more obvious than it is now.

False. Convenience is king. Nothing has become widespread before it became easy to use. The plug and play capability of consoles will always have a place.

@Barighm: the illusion of PC gaming complexity died over 10 years ago. Get with the times.

And convenience is huge. Which is why PC is again a better choice, since every peripheral and a massive, generation spanning library is at your fingertips with one device.

@RaveNRolla: I tought all that mattered was the games, but the usual complain this ending gen is "looks like a VHS". Visual design is so overrated. It's not like you gonna walk around in the street with the console for people to look at you. Shows how shallow some people are.

@santinegrete: exactly. i mean i do wish it was completely black, because it would just fit better with my furniture, but the design is totally fine with me and i find it still very toned down compared to what they could have done with it. nothing too fancy or extravagant, it just looks like a modern computer.

Good to hear that they improved the cooling. My PS4 pro sounds like a fighter Jet.

The good thing is tho it will keep me warm in the winters LOL.

My PC on the other hand keeps me cold in the summers and doesn't make a sound.

If it's 3.5 inches wide, that's no problem for me, that will easily fit in the cabinet I keep the current PS4 in, just below the TV.

Sony's bringing the Memory cards back. Or actually MS already does since from what I remember seeing their external SSD looks exactly like those old PSX memory cards.

Well, I only hope they manage to keep the console quiet this time. The PS4 would get ridiculously loud, at least some iterations of it. Completely unacceptable nowadays. Not that there's ever been any such loud consoles before the PS3, where the original models would also get louder and louder over time.

I don't give a rats ass what it looks like, and if it fits in the back of a pickup truck ... fine by me. It just needs to play the games... that is it. Games, games, and more games. Just play the games and last a Skyrim's lengthy playthrough.

Thermal solution can come in two flavors: a) make the console bigger to put a huge fan inside; or 2) implement a highly efficient liquid cooling system. Option a means bigger console, option b means pricier console. It doesn't matter in the end, because most people will find a reason to complain.

@StonerDemon: That is not how it works. Air v liquid still uses the same amount of surface area to reduce thermals. Air (fan, radiator) - Liquid (fan/radiator as well). And often times the liquid radiators are larger with larger fans.

Liquid removes heat faster, but it has to go somewhere. As it travels from CPU/GPU to metal, to liquid - it then needs to go somewhere. Goes to a radiator, which also needs a fan to exhaust the heat from radiator to outside, or else the heat goes right back to the die.

BTW The dreamcast used a closed loop liquid cooling solution there for a while, was decent but eventually went on to just air.

You do not get a smaller foot print by using liquid over air. And as smaller nm get used. the less temp rise overall because of less wattage needed, but as important to 'get' it all out of the case as more components get hotter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23vjWtUpItk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr0qLLv3dKc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tay4Pz-PQDc

Some reference materials above. But most important to remember - the amount of wattage, or electrons flowing through and grounding produces heat, regardless of how you get rid of it, air and liquid uses surface area per degree, so while the water block looks smaller, the back end - in surface area- will need to be the same.

After Xbox360, MS and Sony both paid attention to heat dissipation. It is expected that the first version of ps5 is huge, and the improved version will be much smaller in a few years.

@EricDWright: To expand the storage you will need to buy a SSD with the specs the PS5 accepts. Those by the way dont exist right now for us mortals coz as you know already,Sony uses SSDs noone on the market does...maybe next year.

You will need probably to open the case and fit the new SSD drive in.

"There’s one big caveat, however: The PS5’s expansion bay won’t accept just any M.2 SSD. In order to ensure performance compatibility with the PS5’s high-speed SSD — and physical compatibility with the size of the expansion bay — Sony will be certifying individual M.2 SSDs for the PS5, which uses the new PCI Express 4.0 standard. Cerny said that it’s “likely” that certifications will begin arriving “a bit past” the console’s launch this fall."

@EricDWright: I believe you can still use any USB drive to store games on while not playing them. You move them over to the internal drive when you want to play, which shouldn't take long at all with a fast drive.

Next gen consoles, especially PS5, takes full advantage of the high end SSD's on the market so "normal" HDD's just aren't quick enough and would bottleneck games causing them to freeze/stutter.

@EricDWright: The PS5 comes with an intern 825GB SSD,the XbsX comes with an intern 1TB SSD. If games get much bigger in size, the intern storages will be full relatively fast...

The XbsX has also an expansion slot at the back where, and by current infos, only custom Seagate SSDs(the physical size equals PS2 Memory cards just bit thicker) can be inserted.

And about the costs...if we are lucky, its about the range of 250-300$ by year 2021-22...but could be more

Sony Engineer: With competition, yes!

Sony CEO: No worries, we will just make less of them & lose less money. Then when the prices go down slightly we can make more. As a bonus we can blame it on COVID!
