Terminator 6 Will Ignore Terminator Genisys, Arnold Schwarzenegger Reveals

Arnold knows.

It was recently reported that Terminator creator James Cameron is to return to the sci-fi franchise to oversee a new movie that will reunite original stars Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Now Schwarzenegger has spoken about the plans for the new Terminator movie and revealed that it will ignore the events of 2015's flop Terminator: Genisys.

At the Experience With Arnold Schwarzenegger event in Birmingham, UK, the Austrian action icon was asked by audience members about the movie. As reported by Terminator Fans, he confirmed that it will have nothing to do with the last Terminator film, and that, not surprisingly, it won't just be titled Terminator 6. In addition, Schwarzenegger revealed that Hamilton had already started training for the role of Sarah Connor.

No Caption Provided

While Schwarzenegger has been talking about a potential return to the franchise for a while, Hamilton's involvement was first confirmed by Cameron last week. Although the character of Sarah Connor has appeared various times throughout the series Hamilton has has not played her since 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Cameron said that her return would "make a huge statement."

The next Terminator film will be directed by Deadpool's Tim Miller, with a story overseen by Cameron and Miller. Television-style writers' rooms are becoming increasingly popular on big franchise movies, and the new Terminator will follow this model. Writers who will work on the story include DC veteran David Goyer, Cameron's Dark Angel collaborator Charles Eglee, and Josh Friedman, who created the Terminator TV spinoff The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

There had been some confusion about whether a new Terminator would actually happen. Terminator: Genisys was originally intended to be the first part of a new trilogy, but its box office failure ended this plan. Subsequent reports suggested that Paramount had abandoned the idea of any more movies; however, Cameron's renewed involvement has now ensured that the series does have a future.

Perusing the comments and I came to the realization that most people commenting didn't actually read (or comprehend) the article. This new film is only going to acknowledge Terminator 1 and 2. Virtually everything else is at this point essentially fan fiction. They are doing the same thing Disney did to the Expanded Universe for Star Wars.

In other words, all of you saying "another" reboot makes the plot convoluted... Not really. This is not a reboot, and it is not a parallel universe, or an altered timeline, or anything of the sort, because the only thing that happened, as far as this new film is concerned, are the events of Terminator 1 and 2. When/if you see this movie, forget anything else in the franchise exists, because as far as this movie is concerned, they don't.

Either James Cameron directs it or this movie is pretty much guaranteed to flop. That Deadpool director is kinda "meh" for a successor to a masterful movie like T2. That movie is way out of his league. Deadpool is an average movie and forgettable movie. You need masterful directors for a great movies like T1 and T2. Cameron is the only one capable of pulling this off. What a shame he's only producing.

As an 80s kid watching movies like romancing the stone when i was little, i was kinda surprised to see Kathleen Turner nowadays in series like Californication (or was it Entourage?). Not that i have anything against obese people, but man, that was quite the transformation.

So, yeah, Linda Hamilton i haven't seen her either since Terminator 2.

I wish they'd make a movie adaption of Frank Miller's Terminator vs. Robocop comic, probably one of the best comics I ever read growing up.

It's more relevant today than ever with the development of autonomous AI being in the news all the time. The crossover comic explains what makes this possible.

They should also give Edward Furlong a job... I don't know how others feel about him, but I would have loved to see him return as John Connor for consistency and the feeling that it's still good old Terminator. The Terminator and Terminator 2 are, as far as I'm concerned, the only good Terminator films. I think Salvation comes in at a distant third. I'm glad Linda Hamilton will be reprising her role, her death in three was stupid. Deadpool was a decent movie; not a great movie in my opinion, but I still think Tim Miller is a fine choice that could potentially do it justice. Lastly, I read that the sequel is going to be a sequel to Terminator 2, and is disregarding the other films... Yay!

@NTM23: we'll see. i'm not a big fan of pure nostalgia if it doesn't fit. it kinda destroyed one of my favourite games for me (Dark Souls series). i'm all for new actors if it makes sense. of course the terminator story doesn't make much sense to begin with, as it includes time travel and so why does Skynet only send 1 Terminator after the mother and after that failed 1 after the son instead of sending a stupidillion every second to make sure at least 1 will get the kill?

@RaveNRolla: What do you mean it destroyed Dark Souls? Dark Souls has literally been more or less the same all these iterations?

@clay544888: Well there was the 1st Dark Souls, which was amazing and an original game (sort of a reboot of Demon's Souls for more players outside of playstation) and the 2nd and 3rd Dark Souls are all based on that Nostalgia of the 1st game. In DS2 pretty much all characters you find talk about how great and legendary the 1st Dark Souls was, giving you a feel of "ok so what am i playing here, does it have an identity of its own?", DS3 is also for a big part based on that Nostalgia, giving the players a half-arsed rehash of the favourite level of the original game, a DLC that does exactly the same and also tries to reimagine favourite boss battles of the original game that of course never come close (Sif, Priscilla, Ornstein & Smaug). I would have liked it better if DS2&3 would've just been more their own games instead of trying to be the 1st game again. The DS2 Dlcs were a great example of how those games should have been done, with new ideas for level design ("unfreeze" eleum loyce, the verticality of brume tower) and cool bosses that definitely have their own identity among players (Sir Alonne, Ivory King). My opinion at least.

I will admit, James Cameron gives me a little bit more hope, as this franchise is his baby. Still, all these convulted storylines everywhere...it's a mess. They need to set the record straight somehow. What's in and what's out the official storyline anymore? I don't know

@RaveNRolla@nabinator Prometheus was pasable, amazing cinematography and art style mix with awful writing. Covenant is kinda fun to watch but a mess at nearly every level.

@nabinator: Recent news is that it's a sequel to T2 and disregarding the other films (T3; Salvation, and Genisys). Another thing is, Cameron doesn't want the crew of the film or anyone else calling it Terminator 6. I think they want it to be seen more as the real Terminator 3 (even though it most likely won't have the word three in it).

@NTM23: While it'd be a shame to see Salvation taken out of the story loop I can deal with that in exchange for tossing Rise of the Machines and Gensisys.

Though if Cameron's taking that approach I almost have to wonder if he's going to take a page out of S. M. Stirling's trilogy, pun intended.

So the whole film has been retconned out of existence?

That's lame. It gave Genisys free license to make big plot twists (regarding John Connor mainly) without having to deal with the aftermath.

I wouldn't mind if they picked up the story after The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It had a lot of potential and IMO was the best Terminator "sequel" after T2.

The Terminator Fans article says this will be a sequel to T2, so they're ignoring more than just Terminator 5.

2 minute scene at the start writing off everything after Terminator 2 as a time traveling resistance victory mission ensuring all events after T2 never happened and we're gravy.

Does anyone have any idea WTF is going on with this franchise any more? There has been so much retconning and rebooting and timeline changing at this point that nothing makes sense any more. Now they are going to just ignore parts of their own franchise? Why bother. Just let it die a dignified death Hollywood. Put it out of its misery already.

The last terminator cost 155 million to make and they made 440 million at the worldwide box office, that is a big profit so why do people call it a flop.

@yukushi: Domestically a movie needs to make double it's budget, worldwide it needs to be three times it's budget due to marketing etc. In the instance of huge blockbusters, it needs to be even more than that, since marketing goes through the roof. So, Terminator Genisys is far from a hit - it's a huge, fat flop.

1. Make it rated R.

2. More realism live action sequences.

3. Less ridiculous over the top CGI

4. Direct sequel to T2, ignore all other movies.

5. Profit??

@snugglebear: Schwarzenegger wasn't in Terminator Salvation. You could say that he "appeared" in it since they CGI'd his likeness in for the T-800 reveal, but he wasn't physically involved with the movie, at least not as an on-stage actor or off-stage voice actor.

@cornbredx: The new movie will ignore T3 for sure, as Sarah Connor had died in it. T3 also had a couple of factual mistakes about previous events, so it's best forgotten. Salvation might be ignored as well, but it didn't affect the overall storyline that much. I treat every sequel after T2 as a story from a parallel Terminator universe, cause the original script ends with T2.
