Sonic 3 Won't Recast Jim Carrey's Robotnik If He Follows Through With Retirement Ideas

Veteran actor Jim Carrey has announced he may retire from acting after Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and with plans already in motion for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, what does that mean for the actor's involvement in the next film? Producers Neal H. Moritz & Toby Ascher recently confirmed that Carrey's Dr. Robotnik will not be recast if Carrey follows through with his plans to retire.

Ascher told IGN, "Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family. And he'll always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he'd like to be around. We love Jim and he's so special. What he does with Robotnik is so incredible. We would love him as long as he'd like to be there with us."

Moritz added: "I have a feeling that he loves Robotnik so much that I don't think he'll be able to walk away from him."

The interviewer then points out that Carrey would leave very big shoes to fill if he stepped away and someone else had to come in to play Robotnik. Moritz replied, "We wouldn't even try" to recast Robotnik.

If Carrey does follow through with his plans to retire or take a break from acting, it's always possible the next Sonic movie could feature a different villain instead of Robotnik.

In doing press for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey revealed that he was "fairly serious" about retiring from the business. "It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I'm taking a break," Carrey said.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opens in US cinemas on April 8, but the movie is already out in a number of international markets and is making lots of money already.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brings back Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic and Jim Carrey as the evil Dr. Robotnik. Idris Elba joins the cast as Knuckles, while Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who voices Tails in the video games, plays the same role in the film. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter also reprise their roles from the original Sonic, and director Jeff Fowler returned as well.

Paramount has said it's planning a third Sonic movie and a TV series as part of its plans for a Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe.
