Sonic 2 Box Office Results: Biggest Opening Of All Time For A Video Game Movie In The US

[UPDATE] Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened in US cinemas on April 8, and the movie had a gigantic, record-breaking opening frame. It made $71 million over its first weekend, which is more than the opening-weekend US numbers for the 2020 film ($58 million). At $71 million, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 scored the biggest opening of all time for a video game film in the US. This was also the most lucrative opening weekend for a Jim Carrey film over his long career in Hollywood.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened in some international markets this past weekend ahead of its US premiere, and the sequel is off to a fast start. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 made $25.5 million this past weekend from 31 international markets. Results so far are up about 2% over the original 2020 film, according to Deadline.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the No. 1 movie this weekend in the UK, France, Australia, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Czech Republic, Austria, Norway, Belgium, New Zealand, Slovakia, and South Africa.

In the US, Sonic 2 premiered Wednesday night fan screenings and a preview session on Thursday that together brought in $6.2 million. The film is expected to make $50 million for its Friday-Sunday weekend in the US.

In terms of its international rollout, Sonic has yet to open in major markets such as Japan, Mexico, Brazil, and Italy.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brings back Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic and Jim Carrey as the evil Dr. Robotnik. Idris Elba joins the cast as Knuckles, while Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who voices Tails in the video games, plays the same role in the film. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter also reprise their roles from the original Sonic, and director Jeff Fowler returned as well.

Paramount has said it's planning a third Sonic movie and a TV series as part of its plans for a Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe. The next film might be made without Carrey, as the veteran actor recently talked about retiring from the business.

"I'm being fairly serious," he said. "It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I'm taking a break."
