PS4's 5.0 Update Revealed, Here's What It Does

PlayStation 4's update 5.0 is available now for some.

PlayStation 4's 5.0 update was leaked last week, and now Sony has officially revealed what's coming in the patch. In short, there are few huge features included in the update--which is out today for select beta testers--but lots of small improvements that should improve the system's functionality overall.

Some of the enhancements center around streaming using the PS4's built-in broadcasting capabilities. PS4 Pro users will be able to stream in 1080p and 60 FPS, provided their connection is strong enough, and PSVR users will be able to see new messages and comments coming through while broadcasting. PSVR is also adding 5.1ch and 7.1ch virtual surround sound support.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Big PS4 Update 5.0 Officially Revealed, Here's What It Does

No Caption Provided

Next up, the PS4's Friends List is being updated with greater management tools, such as the ability to set up separate lists of friends. You'll be able to create a list of all the people you play Destiny with and send them all an invite, for example. This feature replaces the old Favorite Groups tab.

In another move to help reduce the amount of time spent in menus, the Quick Menu is being updated to have more options. For example, you'll be able to check on download progress and see new party invites. You can also leave a party from within that menu and see your current Spotify playlist.

Notifications are also being improved when watching films and TV, as you can now disable message and other notification pop-ups while watching media. You can also change how much of a message is displayed, as well as its color, when playing or watching any form of content.

Finally, Parental Control features are being overhauled in favor of what Sony calls "Family on PSN." This replaces the old Master/Sub account system; instead, one user is deemed the Family Manager, and they can set up other accounts and appoint them as a Parent/Guardian, Adult, or Child. Parents or Guardians can restrict Child accounts in their "use of online features and communication with other players, set restrictions for games, restrict the use of the internet browser, and set spending limits for PlayStation Store." Note that Sony says the first time any North American user tries to set up an Adult account, they will be charged $0.50 "to verify that you are an adult."

You can read all the details of the 5.0 update here. Beta testers who were selected to take part will be able to upgrade today, though bear in mind that your console may experience "unexpected issues" as a result of the beta. Sony does say, however, that you can downgrade to the current version of 4.73. The company has not revealed when the update will go live for all users, though beta invites do include two extra codes for testers to try it out with friends.

Still no fix for the audio issues in the media player. That's great. You've got a problem that makes an entire aspect of the console unusable and you just completely ignore it. Way to go Sony.

@adamfwalker: The Media Player won't play any digital files over DLNA that have a DTS audio track. I'm not sure if this guy has encountered other issues as well.

@g4m1ngon: To be fair they are actually charging 50 cents for creating an account on THEIR network. Pretty sure an account that is unattached to a PSN account can still be created for free on a console. It still should still be given as store credit or refunded after being verified though.

@billy90rickey: You don't need to deposit anything. Just charge your account (Visa, MC, etc) the actual purchase price.

@billy90rickey: Uh, it doesn't for me. If I have $18 in my wallet, it gives me the option (Remaining balance) to put the rest on a card or add more funds to the wallet. Don't get me wrong though, that .50 cent thing is ridiculously stupid. What if I have existing parent child accounts set up? Do I have to create a new Adult account (thereby being forced to pay .50 cents) to redo the account structure? If so, that's really weak. Not because of the 50 cents, but because multiply that by say, 6 million users (On the light side of an estimate that would do that) and Sony makes $3,000,000 doing absolutely nothing.

@Utnayan: And that's on top of what they get for requiring PS+ for online multiplayer on PS4. Console makers seem to have gotten lazy and are looking for quick cash without earning it.

Got the email at work and was excited I got selected, but then I read the details of the update when I got home, and I'm a little bit disappointed tbh. With it being a big 5.0, I was just expecting, more, this just feels like it could of been a 4.8?

I'm not saying that what they're offering isn't important to some, I'm sure it is. It's just with me and my personal situation, nothing on it really affects me. I'm the only one who plays on my PS4, and I don't stream my games or use the party/community stuff.

The only thing I suppose that is something for me, is the changing the colour of the pop ups back to black lol.

@computernoises: are you being funny or do you really not understand? It charges because the bank sends back info about your address and age to Sony (they do it with lots of companies) - once they have the info and it's confirmed you are above 18 then it will release the money after a few Gladys so you get it back and the account will be set up straight away.

It's just an ID check

@spiddyman007: yeah, because people who actually know things and don't moan about stuff they don't understand clearly work for the company they are talking about.... you do know the verification system is actually ran directly through visa and MasterCard and not Sony, they just impliment it like most other places.

I worked for Barclaycard about 15 years ago and they did similar things back then, although it's a bit different these days. That's what. Lot of places ask for card details then charge you a tiny amount and the refund it - to get verification from the card company.

If you're too young to own any cards then that's your issue, maybe you shouldn't be allowed to access the features you need verification for (whole point of the process).

@spiddyman007: no shit... however, the part where you set up a bank account has already been done and you have your bank or credit card company all of your personal information. That means any company can charge you a small amount and electronically send through your details and the system checks if you are telling the truth or lying.

It's mainly used to check addresses and a lot of places will only deliver to the registered address (because the bank confirms it) and they can also check things like name and date of birth.

I'm sure in the past you have srumbles on a porn site that asks for card details as a form of ID - same process. What about PayPal - if you want to receive money you need a bnk found which is confirms your personal details match before allowing it.

Clearly you don't understand what things are in place in order to check people's identity, yet you shrug it off like you do. Well done

@spiddyman007: and that is why you are so upset - you are clearly an immature child who doesn't even have a credit card; therefore amcabt access and set up the process. I guess the only games your parents let you play are portal knights and minecraft.

Freak.

@computernoises: Well the fact that most accounts have to be 18 or over or have a parent on the account so they would then get the info too and see what their child is doing.
