NPD: US game sales slip 7 percent in Sept.

Final summer month's $1.27 billion haul falls just short to Halo 3-boosted '07 sales; 360 sales up 78 percent postprice cut; Force Unleashed, Wii Fit, and Rock Band 2 top games.

September 2007 was a banner month for the US game industry. Halo 3 mania and brisk Wii sales helped boost total US game sales--which include hardware, software, and, accessories--to a massive $1.3 billion for that month, according to figures from industry-research firm The NPD Group.

One year later, the story is slightly different. During September 2008, the game industry didn't deliver quite the same punch as during the same period a year ago, bringing in $1.27 billion for the month.

No Caption Provided

"This is the first true monthly decline the industry has experienced since March of 2006," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier in a statement disavowing January's slightly skewed figures. "It's important to keep in mind, however, that this month's 7 percent decline is against a month that itself was up 75 percent from the prior September."

On the hardware front, Nintendo took home the gold and silver yet again, with the Wii placing first with 687,000 units sold and the DS second with 536,800 units sold. However, Microsoft's dramatic price reduction of the Xbox 360--the cheapest model is now just $199--paid off in the form of a 78 percent jump in sales volume. The console sold 347,200 units during September, up from just 195,000 in August. That was enough to put it past the PlayStation 3 (234,000 units) and its smaller sibling, the PSP (238,100 units). Xbox 360 sales may further increase once all three models of the 360 are bundled with games later this month.

However, despite the high sales volume, monthly hardware revenue was actually down 9 percent year over year, going from $545.7 million in September to $498.0 million. "Hardware unit sales were flat versus last year, so the decline in dollars is due to lower prices," said Frazier. "The average retail price of hardware across all platforms declined 8 percent from last September."

No Caption Provided

The lack of a Halo 3-level blockbuster also caused overall software revenues to decline six percent in September, sliding from $656.5 million to $616.1 million. As expected, the big software hit of the month was LucasArts' Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Three versions of the mildly praised game made it into the top 10, with a total of 1.16 million units: The 360 edition came in first with 610,000 units, followed by the PS3 version (325,000 units) and the Wii iteration (223,000 units).

The only other top 10 newcomer was the 360 edition of Electronic Arts' Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, which came in sixth place with 297,000 copies sold. However, the marginally reviewed game's publisher was well-represented in the top 10, scoring two slots for the 360 (8th, 224,000 units) and PlayStation 2 (10th, 158,000) installments of Madden NFL 09. MTV Games' Rock Band 2, which EA distributes, had a solid debut in third place with 363,000 units. The rhythm-series sequel is due out on the PS3 this month, with PS2 and Wii editions to follow in December.

The rest of the September top 10 game chart belonged entirely to Nintendo. Wii Fit didn't sweat lukewarm reviews, coming in second with 518,000 units despite being on the market since May. One month prior, Mario Kart Wii pulled into stores, but that didn't stop it from a fourth-place finish in September with 353,000 units. Older still is Wii Play, which debuted in February 2007. Despite the fact that the package is simply a Wii Remote packed in with a rudimentary game, NPD still insists on classifying the product as software--software that had a seventh-place finish with 243,000 units sold.

Speaking of classification foibles, NPD continues to not count PC game sales in its monthly video game figures, instead lumping them in with general software figures. However, Frazier took the step of calling out two PC games that launched in September. "Spore realized sales of 406,000 units and Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning sold 274,000, which would put them both in the top 10 list of combined console, portable, and PC games sales for the month," she noted. Unfortunately, NPD does not release such a combined top 10 list to the public.

Its like I keep telling people, whoever has the best library will always win the console war(Wii excluded, that's for casual gamers). M$ proved this by leading the PS3 despite having unreliable hardware and having you pay for online service as opposed to the PS3 giving it to you for free. If that doesn't prove it I don't know what will.

--darkride66-- "Then how come PS3 games sales dwarf Blu-Ray sales? The PS3 was the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market last year and 10 million Blu-Ray disks sold worldwide (and not all to PS3 owners) vs over 50 million PS3 games. No, my friend, people are using their PS3's to play games - the numbers prove it. " ~~~ Well you're right, but all that means is how truly sad the state of Blu-ray disk sales are, in fact they just posted another month of decreasing market share against DVD. Say there are 20 Million Blu-ray players out there...that means worldwide less then half those people bought a single Blu-ray disk the entire year. That's bad.

@ Birdman1333. Also, people buying the PS3 only as a Blu-Ray player? Then how come PS3 games sales dwarf Blu-Ray sales? Birdman1333 said "Developers want their product to sell. They are more interested in which console sells the games than absolute console numbers." If this were the only factor then developers would have never started supporting the 360, because of no fan base, and would still be making nothing but PS2 games. When you look at worldwide numbers for The Force Unleashed, for example, you'll notice the attach rate on the 360 and PS3 are almost identical, and games like Burnout sold neck and neck. Considering that the PS3 is selling faster than the 360 ever did, even though the 360 still has a slight console lead obviously developers don't have an issue with releasing games multiconsole. In fact, until we see one console start to hit the kind of numbers the PS2 had, we will continue to see more titles go multiconsole because the developers have to make up their money somehow - there isn't an installed base of over 100 million console owners waiting for your product (unless you're still making PS2 games, and you could be because the PS2 is still selling.)

Great news for all gamers in my opinion. 347,000 more gamers get to experience Gears of War 2 and 232,400 more gamers get to experience LBP and Resistance 2. Gaming goodness for everyone!!

Many PS3 are sold for the Blu-Ray player. The PS3 will be considered caught up to the 360 when their software sales are equivalent. Developers want their product to sell. They are more interested in which console sells the games than absolute console numbers.

@MSG-Deathscythe HAHAHAHAHAHA. Like I said before, I don't love large companies, MS and Nintendo included. When it comes to consoles, the 360 has the best library. Hence I like it the best. Simple. You on the other hand obviously have a poster of Kutaragi above your bed :D. Secondly Saints Row 1 and 2 are great. You don't like them, well that's your problem. My copy of Dead Space should be arriving soon. And personally I don't have much interest in LBP. I might pick it up next year, after I get through all the other upcoming titles that I want more.

@darkiiix Mad at a little boy like you? You're not worth it buddy :P. I feel sorry for you that's all. I am a gamer. I love games; good games. I don't love big corporations. I don't like liars like Ken Kutaragi, and I sure as hell don't like buying a videogame console and then NOT use it for playing videogames. If these things are your cup of tea, then good for you. I, on the other hand, am pretty happy that I'm not you :D. Ok it's back to Saints Row 2 for me :).

As much as I enjoy watching Blu-Ray movies on my PS3, I'd much rather have a PS3 without a Blu-Ray drive, a cheaper price point, and most importantly quality games to play. At the moment all I do with my PS3 is watch Blu-Ray flicks; I spend most of my time gaming on my Xbox 360. And as for the Wii, the less said about its library the better . You are very wise Frazzle00, you said exactly what I would have said. My 360 gets used to play awesome games (and I still watch my HD-DVD's on it from time to time) and my PS3 gets used to play Blu-Rays and that is it. I'm glad it has a blu-ray though otherwise, it would just sit there.

@Lindbergh You are not being serious are you? Are you saying that a great videogame crash is about to happen? You are sadly mistaken my friend, stop with your propaganda, people will find ways to buy software to entertain themselves even if we go into a deep depression, the areas that will thrive are movies, music and videogames as they are the cheapest overall forms of entertainment available.

Wow to see that the Wii is selling that well after being on the market for nearly 2 years is really amazing. It's kind of weird to be used to hearing that the Wii and the DS are the top two selling systems month after month after month.

@darkiix Read what I said. Was the PS1 your PRIMARY gaming console in 2005? I still play my Genesis, Dreamcast and Neo Geo. However they are NOT my primary console of choice. Regardless of whether or not my taste in games is "good", at least I don't have a hard on for an electronics company that couldn't care less about what I think. If Sony were really listening to what gamers want, they wouldn't be in the position they are in at the moment. @SWYG Halo 3 shifted quite a few 360s. The last holiday season was huge for Microsoft. And as for LBP, it's definitely not a game for casuals. Firstly platformers aren't that popular these days. Secondly the level editor functionality of LBP is deep and time consuming. I don't see many casuals weened on Wii Fit spending hours making a level to share online. And before silly little fanboys like darkiiz jump up and down calling me a 360 fanboy, I'd like to clarify that I have not criticized (or praised) LBP. All I am saying is that it is a game for the hardcore gamer, and that it's most probably not going to be a system seller like Gears of War 2.

@frazzle00 Except LBP attracts different demographics. GeoW2 and Fable 2 are all primarily hardcore games. LBP attracts casuals as well as hardcore gamers. Plus looking back at Halo 3, it didn't push many consoles because everyone that wanted Halo 3 pretty much had a 360. The same thing can be said with GeoW2 and Fable 2. Fable 2 won't because it's a western RPG just like Oblivion and GeoW2 won't because it's a shooter that attracts the same fanbase as the first.

It's a shame PS3 sales aren't picking up hugely, but it was a slick move on 360's part to make a cheap console; people don't care what hard drive they're getting (casual gamers don't get it!), they just want it cheap. Chalk up a ps3 unit from that month from ME! ;) Give it a year; games like FFXIII (the full version) and RE5 will sell Sony's powerhouse. As for Wii... please, some blockbuster titles! Great party system, but it needs more software.

Qoute:" However, despite the high sales volume, monthly hardware revenue was actually down 9 percent year over year, going from $545.7 million in September to $498.0 million." Notice that game sales overall are down signifgantly from last year and much slower then usaul. This has to do with the overall costs of developing titles and the economic crisis also played a role in it too. While everyone will try to spin it as not important since Halo 3 was released last year, everyone should take notice that game sales overall have dropped all year long. This decline is expected to continue and don't be surprised if the holiday season isn't so jolly as they're predicting it to be pretty bad with retailers expected to take quite a hit. As the software market continues to collapse, game sales will continue to fall but console sales won't be affected until the sting is felt. I don' t see any signs that the industry is going to make up for this slow period and every sign of another crash occuring between the end of 2008 and early 2009. People don't like hearing the truth because it hurts.

Quite surprising that the PSP out sold the PS3 for the month of Semptember. Come to think of it with Sony coming out with a new PSP, the PSP-3000 with a new brighter screen and a mic, which I think was announced during end of August or beginning of September. People would of waited a month more to get a better version of the PSP.

By the way darkride66, do you really believe that the PS3 will have a 10 year life cycle? The PS1 was released at the end of 1994 in Japan (and in the middle of 1995 everywhere else). How many people do you think were still using the PS1 as their primary gaming console in 2005? The PS2 was released in 2000. Once again how many people do you think will be using the PS2 as their primary gaming console in 2010? Sony have spun a lot of nonsense over the last few years, and this is probably one of the most blatant pieces of BS they've put forward. What surprises me is the sheer number of suckers out there that take stuff like this as gospel. Come on people, what's with this misplaced notion of consumer loyalty? Shouldn't it be about the games?

According to the figures provided by VGChartz, the Xbox 360 has outsold the PS3 in America this year: VGChartz Hardware data for the period 05th Jan 2008 to 11th Oct 2008: Console PS3 America 2,551,274 Console X360 America 2,690,459 Even in terms of worldwide sales this year, the PS3 has only outsold the Xbox 360 by 1,424,725 units (7,037,679 units to 5,612,954 units). Considering the fact that the Xbox 360 still has more than a 5.5 million unit lead over the PS3, and the holiday season sales have yet to be taken into account (Gears of War 2 and Fable 2 will push more systems than either Resistance 2 or LBP), Sony has their work cut out for them. Anyway regardless of who eventually takes 2nd place, not even the staunchest Sony fanboy can deny the fact that this generation has been disastrous for Sony. Just take a look at the figures from the previous generation if you don't believe me. Nintendo and Microsoft have wrested a sizeable share of the market away from Sony, and unless they put in a lot more effort with the PS3's successor, I don't think they'll be getting it back anytime soon.

I noticed Blu ray players have come down on some models by $100.00 recently now selling at $299.99. Its only time that Sony will have to come down in price for the PS3. Maybe when Microsoft gets its own blu ray drive internal prefered but probably an external one.

_JPH_ said "I believe there will be a replacement for the PS3 much sooner than Sony said it would (like in 5 years, 6 years TOPS) which is less than the 10 year projection they gave." Sony never said no new Playstation for 10 years, they just said the PS3 has a 10 year lifecycle - much like the PS2. If Sony sticks to the format they used with the PSone, PS2 and PS3 the PS4 should be due in 2014-2015 with the PS3 finally retired in 2017.

zoffdino said "It shows that Sony isn't doing what the consumers want: lower the price of your PS3! Over and over again, they try to justify the high price tag of the PS3." What on earth are you talking about? The PS3 is selling faster than the 360 ever did worldwide (just look at how long it took both consoles to hit 15 million), and at a higher price point with stiffer competition. Certainly the reality doesn't seem to speak to a problem. Even in the face of the 360 price cuts they still managed a 25% gain in the US over the previous month and have not only outsold the 360 worldwide so far this year, but even with the 360's increase they've matched the 360's sales in...*gasp* Microsoft's fortress America! Even with the 360's recent gains in Japan the PS3 has still sold 3x as many units there this year alone.

@darkride: "And PS3 sales are up 94% year over year and software sales are up 130% from last year. Yep, that sounds like a pretty strong year so far to me." I meant the US sales, as I stated it below. Don't turn this into FOX news :D.

@darkride: agreed. 360 is still going strong, so there is no need for a replacement anytime soon. I believe there will be a replacement for the PS3 much sooner than Sony said it would (like in 5 years, 6 years TOPS) which is less than the 10 year projection they gave.
