Full List of Xbox One Backwards Compatible Games (So Far)

There will be "hundreds" by the time the service launches in full this fall.

With the introduction of Gears of War 1 and Shadow Complex today for Xbox One backwards compatibility and plans for more Gears games in the future, the list of supported games has risen to more than two dozen. The service is available now only for Xbox One Preview Program members (available by invite only), but when it rolls out publicly this fall, there will be "hundreds" of available titles.

No Caption Provided

While Microsoft has not yet published the final list (it's only August, after all), we have already learned close to 30 of the games that will be available.

Check out the list below, but be aware that the list is subject to change. Be sure to bookmark this page, as we'll keep updating it throughout the year.

Don't see your favorite game here? Head to the Xbox Feedback website and let Microsoft know what game you want to see added to the list. The most-requested game right now is Call of Duty: Black Ops II--which Snoop Dogg might have something to say about.

The Xbox One outsold the PlayStation 4 during the week of E3, something that Microsoft thinks is at least partially attributable to backwards compatibility.

If, for instance, I bought a digital copy of Battleblock Theater for my 360, How do I play it on my Xboxone. Apologies if this is a stupid question.

@adysouth:Digital copies will show up automatically in the "My Games" section, where you can immediately download them to play. At the moment, it is not a feature available to the public. It will be officially released later this year, as right now it's in a sort of beta phase.

@spartanx169x: It's not disc-based only. And for disc-based copies, you have to install the game just like every other game on the Xbox One. You have to "download it again" just like any game on the Xbone.

@Ultra_Taco: Just to be clear, it'll appear in the "Ready to download" section of Games & Apps. A lot of people don't even know about that "hidden" section.

@playstationzone: I can already tell you didn't watch the XBox One conference at E3. Looking at your username...I'm not surprised.

@playstationzone: They have to go each developer and ask for permission to port the game over to the xbone... If that's what your asking its pretty hard to read

Well, I'm keeping my 360s so I really don't care too much about the b/c aspect for Xboxone , however I would think that MS would include Red Dead Redemption and Skyrim. Personally, I'd LOVE to see Skyrim re released/remastered for Xbox One and PS4 with total modding as will be with Fallout 4.

Backwards compatibily is nothing more than a markething thing, but it sure isnt easy or very cheap and this list shows it, 2 years from now only nostalgics or people that have a nostalgic period will still play games from PS3 or 360. The problem is that they must keep their old consoles too as there will always be a game that wont make it on the list.

@florin: you must have not been gaming for long or be that into it. Sometimes going back and playing something from long ago is nice. I've played and beat Super Mario RPG and FF7 a few times over the years.

@bentleyj10: I undestand that. I did it also and it remains a gane for most xbox customers that dont want to keep their 360.

@florin: They've previously stated that every exclusive will eventually be backward comparable. Not to mention all the 3rd party games that will be available as well. I'm sure there'll be a few that unfortunately don't make it, but it'll likely will only be a few.

@florin: It's much more than a "marketing thing". It was implemented based on it being the highest demanded feature by Xbox gamers...and with good reason. I've already gotten rid of my 360, but still have several physical discs as well as digital downloads that I'd love to be able to revisit without needing 2 systems. Not to mention that you can play these games from your X1 with someone who is playing it on their 360. It's something they had no obligation to do, but chose to do for their customers. I agree that over time there will be less interest in playing these older titles, but it'll be a few years yet, and knowing you have the option is nice.

@Reagan2791: The most important reason why it was implemented was because its a good markething tool. Yes, it is usefull for games, but if they werent so far behind PS4, they wouldnt been bother by the no 1 demand.

@florin: I'm in the preview program and it's not a marketing scheme or whatever. It was the MOST REQUESTED. To have on xbox one like PS gamers asked sony for. But the only difference sony wants them to pay for it.

@Bigjoe275: sure, but that is something that gamers always ask from Sony or Microsoft and yet their new consoles started without backwards compatibility. 2 years later, with Xbox so far behind, it finally has ears. Thats good. Gamers will benefit, even if its less usefull than some people want to tell, but the no 1 reason was markething. Watch one year from now Sony doing the same. Do you think that it will be anything more than markething? No, but if their graphics will tell them that this is necessary, they will do it or at least they will find something else.

Backwards compatibility is something that it is benefical at the begining of a new console as there arent enough games, but after 2 years there should be enough games. If there arent, that is the real problem. Better solve this problem.

The list is great and all but there are do many more Arcade titles from the 360 that should be in there.

@flyincloud1116: Halo is being sold as The Master Chief Collection, so maybe later.

Call of Duty is entirely up to Activision and they may not want too.
