Dark Souls sequel in question

From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki apologizes for "technical difficulties" in last year's role-playing game, says not sure if studio will make another title in universe.

The existence of technical issues in a game as large as Dark Souls comes as little surprise, but for developer From Software, these headaches might prevent a sequel from seeing the light of day.

Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.
Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.

In an interview with Edge, From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted there were numerous bugs in Dark Souls, and apologized to fans for this.

"Yes, there were technical difficulties," he said. "I don't believe that it's okay to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game--even in terms of budget and expectations. So we're very sorry for the trouble we've caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan."

When asked about the likelihood of From Software creating another game in the Dark Souls universe, Miyazaki said he's not sure it will happen, or if fans will forgive the studio for previous technical issues.

"We don't even know if we'll have another chance," he said. "We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer."

Technical issues do not spell doom for all large-scale games. The Fallout series, a franchise notorious for its widespread and sometimes comical bugs, has spawned numerous sequels despite these issues.

Dark Souls was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October to a glowing critical reception. It went on to ship more than 1.5 million units worldwide and was October's sixth-best-selling title.

@babyrhinos ya, I agree, Skyrim was a mediocre game. Truly, I did play 110 hours, that were quite enjoyed. But Bethesda has done nothing new with that sereies since Morrowind. Dark Souls, is the first Ive played (I heard there was a Demons Souls). It has been, and still is, one of the best gaming experiences Ive had. Its truly a RPG, with lots of excellent combat, and with many intense creative worlds and enemies to explore. Giving all the more imaginative ways to die. Ive played the game at least 70 hours, and am not near beating it. My character is eventhat good yet, im struggling to survive my current battles. That is what makes this game so great. Skyrim, I got my archery to 100, and could win any battle with ease. Not so in dark souls. So for the people of Software, I forgive you of the little errors ( slow frame rate, a sometimes lethal target lock) and encourage you to make another Souls game, that will amaze me again, and help me realize that some video games are still worth playing.

The souls series is amazing but yes, I agree with the fact that you are unsure on a release of another sequel. I want another challenge from you. You want to leave the souls series? Fine! But please give us other games so challenging and improve this already amazing online that you created. There is really nothing to forgive since you improved your games in such a wonderful way. I don't even remember when I tried so hard to beat a game and I'm into games since I was 7 years old (I will be 30 soon), so keep up with the good work you did so far and keep on making us sweat to defeat a boss or progress in the game.

If anyone should be apologizing for butchering a game, leaving it unpolished and buggy as heck, it's Bethesda. Not From Software, who made a masterpiece of a game! They took risks, and created an experience unlike any other. Skyrim is just the same thing as any other game aside from its insane amount of gameplay hours. From Software, we don't forgive you, because we were never angry with you in the first place! :D Just make a sequel you crazy apologetic geniuses!

Dear From Software: I Forgive you. Now please, please make a sequel. I just started the series with dark souls because I haven't had a ps3. And boy was I missing out on a great game. It seems the good really do die young if this is in danger.

i agree with everyone here, the souls series in general is the most unique rpg experience i have seen. i would love to play another in the series, maybe with a more unique way to coop with friends, and maybe scale the difficulty off of that. If i were able to play more conveniently with friends i would never stop playing.

This guy is being awfully hard on himself. Dark Souls was one of the best games of the year. I loved it. I played mostly by myself rarely summoning someone into the game but I did a few times and it was very fun. I think the problem of a sequel is the amount of copies that sell because of A.) lack of advertisement leaving the main stream casual crowd out. B.) the game is too difficult for the average gamer and some people are scared away.

This game has changed my views on how an RPG should be like. All games have bugs but unless it makes the full game unplayable, then I doubt any fans will care. Definitively one of the best games I've played in a long time and it's the 2011 game of the year for me.

I played this game and the multiplayer worked fantastic for me. That was a huge improvement from what I had to endure in Demon Souls. Back then there were only 2 servers in the world - one in US and the other in Japan. And I played the US version of the game here in Israel, you can imagine the difficulties in logging in and staying connected. All in all, my Dark Soul's experience was flawless, of course there are places to improve, such as less dependency on Walkthroughs for some secrets and more in-game story and better ending. I pray to the everlasting dragon for more Souls games.

What freaking bugs? I played through the game two and a half times and a bunch of my friends finished it too without encountering any serious bugs. Multi-player did not always work perfectly but I don't think there has ever been a game where multi-player was not an occasional issue. I hope From software does not listen to whiny fools who likely criticized the game because you needed actual skill to finish it and didn't get 5 achievements every time you paused and scratched your a*se.

I really hope they don't stop making these games. Dark Souls is as close to a perfect game as I have ever played. I didn't notice any particular technical difficulties except for some occasional frame rate drops. No other game offers such a challenge and provides such satisfaction. Most people want simple button mashing games that are about collecting achievements rather than overcoming a challenge and that's fine as long as occasionally there's a game for those of us who want to have to work to finish a game and not simply put in enough time.

No worries about the bugs... At least a developer finally got the stones to make a game with a challenge. DS is one of the most difficult and memorable games I've ever finished and by far the most satisfying! Keep it up, From Software! Where's our OTOGI 3? :) @ XanderZane There is no need for any invincible codes or cheats to beat this game. You just have to take your time and pay very close attention to your surroundings and enemy patterns. I thought it was impossible too until I realized that it's a different kind of game that requires a whole different set of strategies. This game is practically alone among games, LOL.

It's Nice to see a delv actually acknowledge bugs and apologizes for them even if the bugs were minor at best. Dedicated servers is a must in the next game. Try getting Atlus to publish again. But please give us another Soul game.

@Rovelius said: @XanderZane No, I died about a dozen times total on my first playthrough. I thought you would figure it out but since people are so stupid on this website, we have to tell them absolutely everything, hmm? Prepared or not, dodging and parrying are always there for you. You can beat the game at Lv 1. What seems to be out of most gamers' graspe is the fact Dark Souls is a SLOW game. You have to think every single action, move carefully, evaluate situations and strategize. It's not an action game. The players who will die are those who expect it to play like GOW or Bayonetta. ****************************************************** Well yes, I know that. People who haven't played the first game may be in for a rude awaking. The game is still tough and you can't play through on L1 unless you have an invincible code.

@jhcho2 You're missing my point completely. Regardless if From Software, the developer, Bandai, or Prince Phillip is behind the thought not to make another Dark Souls..It's obviously foolish. The game is rated high by everyone. And, I'm guessing it is very profitable. I would expect them to be more ambitious with Dark Souls' future, not the opposite. Just throwing the title in the garbage is unthinkably moronic because of how much acclaim it's received.

Bugs aside, Dark Souls is the best game I have played in recent memory. If they do not continue the series, it will be a severe loss to fans of great games. I think that From Software is being too hard on themselves and should look more towards what they did right, which was essentially everything. Praise the sun, and praise From Software for creating such an amazing game. I can't wait for the 3rd one.

I honestly never understood the extreme critical acclaim for either of the Souls games, especially when considering From's King's Field series, which aesthetically and conceptually is practically identical, was pretty much panned collectively in the Western market. I think all From's dark fantasy games have been awesome, even Shadow Tower, and I'm really pleased with the success they've seen from these games. But anyone who has played the King's Field games can tell you that the Souls games at they're foundation, are pretty much King's Field in third person. Anyways, back to the point. I agree with most that the Studio is being too hard on themselves. It's apparent that a lot of time and work went into Dark Souls, and those few bugs did nothing to keep me away from religiously playing the hell out of the game till I completed it...4 times. So yeah, pretty sure your fans forgive you. And I'm pretty certain most of us who posted here would buy the next Souls game day of.

Uhhh... or you could learn from your mistakes on how to better QA your games in the future if they're clearly still commercially successful? Criticism, warranted or otherwise, isn't a reason to go throw yourself off a cliff. Making an epic game bug free is a challenge for sure. Not everyone gets it right every time. Talk about an irrational fear of failure.

NO! Please make more Soul games - Dark Souls is my FAVOURITE game of all time. Glitches (I assume this is about the lag rate) barely affect the standard of gameplay at all and considering the whole world is seamless (no loading screens when moving from one area to another) makes the occasional choppy frame rate perfectly justifiable. I mean, if Hidetaka Miyazaki states that if a sequel is made he is willing to improve upon these 'glitches', then I see no problem.

Hes the kind that if he doesnt have a decent insult or cant think of anything after mocking him he trys to slam you for spelling wrong

Hey, I have no problems with fanboys.

I do, however, despise those die-hard ones who can't take a different opinion on the things that they love so, so much, that they would outright insult anyone who has a different opinion.

@Gelugon_baat I'm not sure why you even bothered saying I'm different... People with open minds are relatively rare, but you'd probably find more if you stopped being mean at undeserving people. It doesn't take a genius to figure out fanboys, not sure why you spend so much energy on that. Not sure if I'm interested to know why either. It's all very boring to me. And yawwwn, do I reallllllllyyyy have to type this childish thing? Please, please, please make more games in the series. It's so awesome! I didn't find the technical difficulties a problem at all. They were less than the problems in Skyrim, and I love that game as well. Don't beat yourself up about it, From Software, just polish the technical aspects and do what you do best.

Sure there were a few bugs, but nothing major in my opinion. The game was hard enough so that when bugs happened it mostly advantaged me :D When it didn't, well of course I grumbled a bit but it didn't stop me from playing it through. It was an awesome challenge and I want more! As probably hundreds of thousands do also. Too bad Miyazaki and Edge probably won't read our comments. If he does, well I hope he can feel reassured that the bugs weren't such a problem for gameplay. As for the programmers, I can imagine the stress they endured to fix the bugs. I for one would gladly give them all a great handshake with congratulations on hard work. This was actually my first PS3 game that motivated me to get 100% trophies. Miyazaki, Edge .... I'll be eagerly waiting for more!

@Outer_Raven I had to wrote 2 comments to say and state everything, and you blindly deny it. You have got to be a Nintendist, if not, you're just like one. You aren't helping out gaming industry you are screwing it. Dark Souls was, overall, better than Demon S, but it was way more flawed than the first game, if From doesn't acknowledge it's flaws, soon enough they'll think "We just did and mildly improved sequel, and people worship the game. So we can make a big profit while leaving the formula unaltered." What do you think it happened with Activision, EA and Capcom? They need to know that their game isn't perfect, but Miyazaki said "he's not sure it will happen (a sequel), or if fans will forgive the studio for previous technical issues. ". And with worshippers like you that say things like "No, the game is perfect, a missing scenario bug, a crappy frame rate, exploits and the camera isn't a problem!" that end up screwing games we like. I remember reading a VG Cats comic that stated "It's trendy to like games now. We're @#$%&* marketable." and that's just the situation. I don't want see one of the most innovative games to date be screwed by pure hype, the hype of MILLIONS buying the game and supporting without even playing, in fact i dare say you barely played and if you did, then i ask you review your opinions as a gamer. And lastly, you didn't listened to me at all in my last comment, i'm pretty sure you'll just ignore me again so i won't discuss the dificulty issue too.

So I hope that FromSoftware will make more games.

@Raxyman "In an interview with Edge, From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted there were numerous bugs in Dark Souls, and APOLOGIZED to fans for this." I'm pretty sure that's an apologie. Also, just because Kevin Van Ord says something doesn't make it a fact. That's his opinion. In my opinion, the camera ain't broken, otherwise I (and millions [YES MILLIONS] of other players) wouldn't been able to replay the game over and over again. If you think Dark Souls was too hard for you fine, go play something else, but don't come around here complaining like a 12 year old.

"we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes" What, they actually CARE about what their customers might think of the bugs and how it affects their playing experience? I've never heard that kind of approach before, seems like this guy hasn't gone to the same school as the western companies that basically say: We are Game Company, prepare to be DRM-ed, resistance/whining/complaining is futile.
