the combat is so good because it is so tight. Weapons must make contact to register a hit (and it's very precise) and button mashing will get you killed every time. Every weapon behaves differently with a different hit box and attack animation. You have to be meticulous and conserve your stamina or you won't be able to swing your weapon or raise your shield. The combat is extremely simple, yet extremely deep and refined. This is a game you have to play to understand.

Newbies always ask what the best weapon is, or the best armour or the best build. Awesome thing about this game is you find what works for you. there is almost always an "easier" way to go about things in this game, you must always be patient and try a new approach if what you're trying isn't working. Find a good spot to "farm" souls and level yourself up as much as you can.

I love that in Demon and Dark souls, a character 100 hours in can be killed by the simplest enemies if they get impatient and try to run through them or mash buttons, not to mention falling off cliffs. The thing nobody seems to mention about these games is that they are totally fair, every move that every enemy does has a counter you can utilize, and they are all telegraphed. It's up to you to find a strategy that works for you. It forces you to be meticulous, which is quite different than almost anything else I've played recently. If you throw in an easy mode, this goes out the window, and the point of the game is missed, IMO.

@C2N2 no, you can sign up to go to war, too. It's as easy as frolicing in a field. I don't know about commanding or alien races, but you can shoot at brown people. I'm pretty sure playing violent shooters actually makes for better soldiers.

every time I buy a game like this, they make it free for PLaystation PLus users within two weeks. Probably spent $60 this year on stuff that ended up free.

And in related news, I keep telling myself I'm a sexy millionaire, hoping that it, in fact, comes true.

I actually like a game that makes me use trial and error, memorize enemy patterns or mix up my tactics to proceed. I've had my share of rage, but there's a difference between genuine challenge and cheapness. The last controller I remember smashing came from one of the Mortal Kombat games on PS2, MKs were always incredibly cheap games, the CPU knew what you were doing and countered with an 8 hit combo before you had even pressed the button. I loved Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, platinumed them both, even though I died countless times, I never got mad at the game, only disappointed with myself, because most deaths were avoidable. While you did have to die a number of times to learn enemies moves and attacks, they were always telegraphed and avoidable, and enemies always had a weakness. In short, I thought these were very fair games, if not forgiving. The sense of accomplishment from beating these games is one I've seldom felt in many years of gaming.

@Kenicavus I tried playing video games recently without being under the influence of marijuana. I totally hated it. These two activities have fused together to become one even more awesome activity.
