Gamer dies after Diablo III marathon

Taiwanese player collapses after 40 hours in front of Blizzard's online action role-playing game, pronounced dead at hospital.

A Taiwanese man collapsed and died over the weekend after playing Blizzard's Diablo III for 40 straight hours. The Australian Associated Press reported the story, citing the Taiwanese United Daily News as the source of the information.

According to the report, the 18-year-old man entered an Internet café in southern Taiwan around noon on Friday, booked a private room, and played almost two days without stopping to eat. On Sunday morning, an employee of the café entered the room to check on the man and found him resting on a table. Shortly after being roused, the man collapsed and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

This is far from the first time a marathon gaming session has ended in tragedy. The AAP reported that another Taiwanese man died in February after a 23-hour gaming jag ended with a heart attack. In 2007, a 30-year-old man collapsed and died in Guangzhou, China, after gaming for three straight days, In 2005, a 28-year-old South Korean man died after a 50-hour gaming session. In 2003, police in Hong Kong cited a six-hour stint playing Diablo II at an Internet café as a contributing factor in a 28-year-old man's death. In 2002, a 24-year-old South Korean man died after 86 uninterrupted hours of gameplay. That same month, a 27-year-old Taiwanese man lasted 32 hours before succumbing to death by exhaustion.

[UPDATE]: Blizzard released the following comment on the news:

"We're saddened to hear this news, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We don't feel it would be appropriate for us to comment further without knowing all of the circumstances involved.

"While we recognize that it's ultimately up to each individual or their parent or guardian to determine playing habits, we feel that moderation is clearly important, and that a person's day-to-day life should take precedence over any form of entertainment."

How many deaths have occurred in front of Blizzard games at this point? I feel like I only hear about this type of thing with regard to Starcraft, Diablo, and WoW.

Wow...gamers in china are both hardcore and crazy to play games for many days without taking a break lol

seems china has started a new trend "Suicide by Diablo III". another reason not letting fans play Diablo III on their own time and pace instead of the company's time and pace was a really greedy, selfish and idiotic idea by blizzard.

Wait a second. Didn't this same exact thing happen a few years ago but it was an MMO?

People die doing anything... I could die now typing on my phone... Too much of anything isn't healthy.

Is it only Asians who die from this sort of thing? Article certainly makes it sound like it.

He probably played hardcore mode...

Did a 43.7-hour Skyrim run over Labor Day weekend, but I was in the comfort of my own home, had plenty of food and drink at the ready, and have the common sense required to know that if my body's telling me "cut this out or I quit", to go to sleep!

My character must've appeared drunk to the NPCs, as I'd nod off for a few seconds and snap back to attention with my character running in place against a wall, but I beat the main quest and a good chunk of the side material (including resolving the civil war in favor of the Imperials) in one sitting.

Only game I've played that said take a break was Metal Gear Solid 4. It would actually keep track of how long you've been playing and mention a break every 45 minutes to an hour. I'm surprised more games haven't done this.

Probably died of boredom playing Diablo 3.

Anyone else notice the one thing common all of these deaths share?

Dang, I'd like to know what the actual cause of death was, I mean if it is just exhaustion then that is kind of scary as I've stayed up 43 hours once(can't go past as I already started to lose my mind, wouldn't stay up that long again either).

It´s funny that we never articles about people that die due to over excercising even though that actually happens all over the world every single day of the year but one chap plays a game to exhaustion and it´s a big deal??

Everything should be done in moderation, except commenting on stupid news stories.  We should all go OVERBOARD in tearing them up.

Always Asian... Wonder what makes these kids push the boundaries so far? Hell, I've had long play sessions, but getting up to eat and sleep shouldn't be something you should resist :-/

Have a break every now and then, its good for you.

I wonder if games should have a built in timer, so that after X hours have passed, the game auto-saves, pauses, and then pops up a reminder on screen:

"You have been playing for X hours, time to take a break ?" (Yes / No)

But really, people shouldn't need a reminder.

RIP poor guy, this is very sad.

@ohteesee online video game addiction is supposedly more common there. some places like China have even tried to regulate playing hours. the environment's different than the US for example, internet cafes are more popular which could facilitate bad eating habits(or none at all) while gaming. then there's goldfarming for income being more common, often involving long hours in sh't conditions.

@SimuLord Dovahkin! why you standing around the battlefield doing nothing while your fellow legionnaire's are fighting and dying! lol

@YuJoo A lot of newer Nintendo games do it now.  I was playing Zelda Ocarina of time 3ds and Naiyi was like "Hey listen you been playing for quiet a while why not take a break"  Link between worlds does that as well.

@Smosh150 I have stayed up for just over 72 hours once, i dont know what was wrong with me, but any time i crawled into bed i just couldn't sleep, after 2 and a half days i felt so sick it was almost impossible to fall asleep, finally early in the morning of the 4th day i finally forced myself to lay down and sleep

@semi74 it's news on a gaming site. no one's making a big deal out of it.

@zombiewarrior07 that'd be about as useful as audience ratings.

Really? That's awesome. I know some Wii games occasionally tell you to get up and stretch every now and then. Hyrule Warriors may have told me to take breaks but I was having too much fun haha.

@Kickable I know that Gamespot is a gaming channel but this also got air time on some mainstream channels too.  Probably cause gaming is the vehicle of the devil to take  over ze planet according to Fox news.

@semi74 @Kickable well there's really little precedence for this outside of the past 5 years or so.  this is f'cking strange happenings and maybe a wake-up call to some clueless parents lol

@Kickable @zombiewarrior07 So you're an expert judge on other people's ideas, now?

Lol, sorry to piss on your fireworks, but I think you're the only person who takes your comment seriously...

Kickable
Kickable

@zombiewarrior07 @Kickable not trying to set off any fireworks, I just know I don't need a video game to tell me I need a break, you said yourself people shouldn't need one either, they most likely don't, or would disregard it. you don't need an expert opinion for this.

zombiewarrior07
zombiewarrior07

@Kickable @zombiewarrior07 I think you were "busted" (i.e. broken) the day you were born, little man.

Next time you shoot up, be careful not to overdose and snuff it, it would break my f****** heart.
