@sonicare: In Canada after doing some tests, taking some courses, and paying for a license, you are able to get a hunting rifle. You can take an additional test and pay more to get a restricted license, which allows you to purchase a pistol. Unless your job requires it though, you are not allowed to carry a pistol on you in public or in private, and having a pistol in the home for self defence is not a legit reason to have one, in the eyes of the Canadian government. You would need the pistol unloaded in a locked gun safe for the Canadian government to be okay with you owning one, if your job does not require one. Only place you are allowed to shoot a pistol legally is at a firing range.
