Poll Do you like the taste of alcohol? (55 votes)

Yes 44%
No 56%

.. or you think you do, but you're actually into it for other reasons (buzz, socializing, peer pressure, confidence builder, an excuse to act out of character, etc...)?

A lot of people believe they genuinely do enjoy the taste. Some would even go in length eloquently describing how they like it (on the rocks, shaken not stirred, etc..) and the pleasant notes and flavors they get out of their favorite drinks.

And they might be right. But to truly know the answer to whether or not alcohol taste is likable, you could apply a simple cognitive test that could help you mentally separate the taste from the social / buzz experience.

The cognitive test is answering the question: Would you enjoy, and frequently seek the experience, of drinking an exact-taste but alcohol-free (i.e. no buzz) replica of your favorite alcohol beverage at home alone while watching TV / relaxing /etc.. ?

Try the above thought experiment with friends / family and see what interesting results you might get.

No I do not. I drink for the buzz and social aspect. This reminds me of Jim Jefferies take on people who don't like the taste of it. "Nobody does!"

Seeing as the Pacific Northwest is one of the best areas in the US for beer, yes, you could say I love, not like, the taste of alcohol.

Nope; I don't drink alcohol. Sure, I've tried a few alcoholic drinks, some of them I even enjoyed the taste but it had nothing to do with the alcohol.

Yes. There are some beers, wines, and liqueurs that I very much enjoy drinking. I've had some non-alcoholic beers that were quite good.

I drink for the buzz and social aspects, and yes I also drink because I like the taste, although I still hate beer. It's definitely an aquired taste as I used to exclusively drink cocktails and wine, but for hard alcohol with flavor I suggest a good bourbon whiskey. Not only is a good bourbon have many flavors to pick out, but the right amount (a lot) will make you feel like you are breathing out smoke. If you want something a bit sweeter I suggest rum.

As far as your hypothetical, its difficult to say as I have never had a non-alcoholic whiskey (though I have heard bad things). I sort of doubt I would drink without the alcohol though as it's sort of a package deal. Same goes for bad tasting alcohol really, I won't drink beer because it tastes like crap to me (same goes for straight Vodka), and I likely wouldn't drink non-alcoholic due to lack of a buzz. Also would you even get the beautiful feeling of exhaling through the nose without the alcohol or the same feel of smelling it? I find it difficult to believe that it would be the same. If it had at least those two things as well as the fire belly aspect I probably would drink it.

What do you mean by alcohol? Just pure grain alcohol tastes medicinal but I like a really nice spirit. A good bourbon, scotch, tequila, mezcal, rum, etc are very nice if done well. I also like a good beer especially stouts. For me it was like drinking coffee the first time because the first cup of coffee I had was crap but a good cup of coffee is something else. Same goes with any alcohol.

Yes, I do like the taste of some. That first sip of cider on a hot day is refreshing as ****.

There's some rums in particular that I think are quite good straight and mix really well with cola.

And in answer to the last bit of your post, that would be a yes. I could especially see myself drinking Sailor Jerry as a non-alcoholic drink. That's close to being my perfect rum. And again with cider, it would still be a pretty refreshing drink even without the alcohol.

If it's combined with other flavors then I do.

Not if it's straight up alcohol.

I like the taste of some beers but more often than not the alcoholic drinks I like the taste of are the ones where you can't notice the taste of alcohol... so no, I'm gonna vote no.

I'm okay with most imported beers. I haven't found an American beer I've enjoyed yet and I'm trying different ones every chance I get, not the piss you buy when you're cheap.

The day I start drinking wine is the day I admit I'm old. Ain't happening.

Neat whiskey is fine here and there, not preferred. Obviously mixed drinks are where it's at but they can get both expensive and very dangerous to consume. If you're an inexperienced drinker you'll want to give mixed drinks a bit of respect.

It's hard to separate the influence of alcohol from the drinking experience so I wouldn't trust the answers of drinkers. Having said that, I drink nonalcoholic beer regularly and I very much savor the taste. But again, beer has euphoric effects unrelated to alcohol so even my answer may not be reliable.

I love the taste of whiskey and Bourbon, specialty beers. I don't drink much because I can't justify spending the money on decent alcohol.

Yes. I like to drink good whisky, preferably single malt scotch one. I do it often alone and in such low quanities that I don't get drunk.

I also like plenty of beer brands, mostly when eating meat of some sort. Same with wine.

Vodka I hate and just drink it for the buzz during parties.

@AdrianWerner: same here, you don't need a buzz to enjoy good scotch or bourbon. It does give you the best buzz, but not required.

Vodka is good for a cheap buzz at a party.

I like cocktails. I am good at making them, since I have worked as a bartender for a few years, it was a terrible bar but at least it was a job.

I feel when it comes to any food/drink with an "acquired taste" it's less about learning to like it and more about learning to tolerate it.

You're right about that. Though if I am drinking more for the becoming slightly drunk aspect of it... Nothing beats a shot of vodka... Or several.

Nope, the taste of alcohol is unarguably the worst thing about alcoholic beverages for me.

I can only stand beer and wine because anything with a heavier alcoholic concentration tastes like alcohol alone and I find it disgusting.

Alcoholic drinks that attempt to mask the flavor of the primary ingredient are usually way, way too sweet for me to enjoy. For my money, it doesn't get much better than three parts Crown and one part sweet vermouth over ice in a tumbler.

I drink single malt Scotch liquor an ounce at a time, usually no more than two ounces in a sitting, with a meal, prepared neat, solely for the flavour.
